Background and Objectives: The epidemiological pattern of the hip fracture burden attributable to falls in Central European countries is still insufficiently known. The aim of this study was to assess the regional and national trends of hip fractures due to falls in Central Europe from 1990 to 2019. Materials and Methods: Using the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2019 study, this descriptive epidemiological study presents trends in incidence of and Years Lived with Disability (YLDs) from hip fractures due to falls in the region of Central Europe. All estimates (age- and sex-specific rates, and

AIMS: Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, incidence of hip fracture has not changed. Evidence has shown increased mortality rates associated with COVID-19 infection. However, little is known about the outcomes of COVID-19 negative patients in a pandemic environment. In addition, the impact of vitamin D levels on mortality in COVID-19 hip fracture patients has yet to be determined.
METHODS: This multicentre observational study included 1,633 patients who sustained a hip fracture across nine hospital trusts in North West England. Data were collected for three months from March 2020 and for the same

Nanoscale mineralized collagen fibrils may be important determinants of whole-bone mechanical properties and contribute to the risk of age-related fractures. In a cross-sectional study nano- and tissue-level mechanics were compared across trabecular sections from the proximal femora of three groups (n = 10 each): ageing non-fractured donors (Controls); untreated fracture patients (Fx-Untreated); bisphosphonate-treated fracture patients (Fx-BisTreated). Collagen fibril, mineral and tissue mechanics were measured using synchrotron X-Ray diffraction of bone sections under load. Mechanical data we

In clinical practice, hip fracture is a very common reason for hospital admission in the elderly. Most subjects over the age of 65 years, experience an injury at the hip mostly after a fall. Many elderly persons suffer from osteoporosis, which is characterised by loss of bone mass and deterioration of bone microarchitecture thus increasing the susceptibility to fracture. Osteoporosis is defined by WHO as a Bone Mineral Density (BMD) of 2.5 standard deviations (SD) below that of a young adult as assessed by dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA). It has been shown that some patients with a hip

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study is to (1) identify the incidence of surgical delay in hip fractures, (2) evaluate the time point surgical delay puts patients at increased risk for complications, and (3) identify risk factors for surgical delay in the setting of surgical management of hip fractures.
METHODS: A multi-center database was queried for patients of 60 years of age or older undergoing surgical treatment of a hip fracture. Surgical delay was defined by days from admission until surgical intervention. Univariate analyses and multivariate analyses were performed on all groups.

UNLABELLED: To evaluate the evidence for the resuscitation of patients with hip fracture in the preoperative or perioperative phase of their treatment and its impact on mortality.
DESIGN: We searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, CENTRAL and PROSPERO databases using a systematic search strategy for randomised trials and observational studies investigating the fluid resuscitation of any patient with hip fracture. No language limits were applied to the search, which was complemented by manually screening the reference lists of appropriate studies.
OUTCOME MEASURES: Mortality at 1 week, 30 days and 1 year f

INTRODUCTION: Osteoporosis is a major cause of low-energy hip fractures. Although there are pharmacologic agents available for both prevention and treatment, less than 10% of hip fracture cases initiate anti-osteoporotic treatment.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: In 1995 and 2008, questionnaires were sent to all Danish orthopaedic surgery departments treating patients with low-energy hip fractures, asking them to explain a) whether patients with osteoporosis are identified, b) whether the patients identified are treated for osteoporosis, and c) whether physicians need more information about osteoporosi

It is widely accepted that hip and spine fractures are associated with substantial morbidity, but there is growing awareness that other fractures are under-recognized. The incidence of nonspinal, nonhip fractures is higher than for hip fractures because they occur at an earlier age. Furthermore, the incidence of nonspinal, nonhip fractures exceeds that of hip fractures in men and women >80 years old. Nonspinal, nonhip fractures are associated with considerable morbidity. On average, women with humeral, ankle, distal forearm, and foot fractures experience substantial numbers of limited activity

Typically, patients with failed internal fixation of a hip fracture have marked pain and disability. These patients may present treatment challenges. Salvage is tailored to the anatomic site of the nonunion, the quality of the remaining bone and articular surface, and patient factors such as age and activity level. In younger patients with either a femoral neck or intertrochanteric fracture nonunion with a satisfactory hip joint, treatment typically involves revision internal fixation with or without osteotomy or bone grafting. In older patients with poor remaining proximal bone stock or a bad

Periprosthetic fractures after total hip arthroplasty (THA) were found in 0.77% (33 fractures in 4280 THA). At the time of fracture the prosthesis was loose in about one-third of the cases. In most cases (63%), the fracture was located at the distal end of the prosthesis. Fractures at this location were transverse or short oblique; those situated more distally were spiral. Whereas those located along the prosthesis shaft were long oblique. Open reduction internal fixation was performed immediately for all fractures. Thirty patients were followed an average of 2.7 years (1 year-11 years) after

The results of ten acute, displaced proximal femoral fractures in patients 14 years and under are reported. These high-risk fractures were managed with urgent open reduction and pin or screw fixation with supplemental spica casting. The exception to this protocol was in two Delbet's type IV (intertrochanteric) fractures which were managed by closed reduction and spica casting. There was a case of partial avascular necrosis of the femoral head in a type I transepiphyseal fracture. At a minimum followup of 2 years the patients were asymptomatic with no significant limitation of hip motion.

Eleven intraoperative femur fractures occurred during 605 total hip replacements at Rancho Los Amigos Hospital, an incidence of 1.8%. Fractures occur more often in women, are usually located in the proximal femur, and mostly occur during femoral reaming. The main predisposing factors were osteoporosis and previous hip operation. The treatment may be operative or non-operative depending on the location and type of fracture. This complication is associated with a high morbidity and a significant delay in convalescence.

The present review summarizes the pathogenic mechanisms leading to hip fracture based on epidemiological, experimental, and controlled studies. The estimated lifetime risk of hip fracture is about 14% in postmenopausal women and 6% in men. The incidence of hip fractures increases exponentially with aging, but the time-trend in increasing age-specific incidence may not be a universal phenomenon. Postmenopausal women suffering earlier non-hip fractures have an increased risk of later hip fracture. The relative risk being highest within the first years following the fracture. OBJECTIVE: Although several prognostic models have been developed for patients who underwent hip fracture surgery, their preoperative performance was insufficiently validated. We aimed to verify the effectiveness of the Nottingham Hip Fracture Score (NHFS) for predicting postoperative outcomes following hip fracture surgery.
METHODS: This was a single-center and retrospective analysis. A total of 702 elderly patients with hip fractures (age ≥ 65 years old) who received treatment in our hospital from June 2020 to August 2021 were selected as the research participants. They were divided into th

INTRODUCTION: standardised protocols for the care of geriatric hip fractures demonstrate improved patient outcomes with decreased cost. The purpose of this study is to evaluate outcomes of a standardised hip fracture protocol at an urban safety-net hospital.
METHODS: All trauma patients presenting to our urban safety-net hospital are included in a trauma database and inpatient outcomes recorded. A hip fracture protocol was introduced at our institution in 2015, which depended on admission to a monitored setting due to the absence of a geriatric co-management service. The database was queried

BACKGROUND: Atrial fibrillation (AF) and hip fractures are both prevalent in the elderly population. The aim of this study was to systematically review the literature regarding the association between AF and hip fractures, and the impact of AF on hip fracture prognosis.
METHODS: The literature search was performed using PubMed, MEDLINE, Embase and Scopus. Inclusion was based upon the application of eligibility criteria in duplicate prior to data extraction with a standardized form.
RESULTS: A total of 42 studies met the inclusion criteria. AF prevalence was found to vary between 6.5% and 35%
