Olfaction alters spatial memory strategy of scatter-hoarding animals.

Although it has been suggested that olfaction is closely interconnected with hippocampal systems, whether olfaction regulates spatial memory strategy remains never known. Furthermore, no study has examined how olfaction mediates spatial memory established on the external objects, for example, caches made by scatter-hoarding animals. Here, we experimentally induced nondestructive and reversible olfaction loss of a scatter-hoarding animal Leopoldamys edwardsi, to test whether and how olfaction regulates spatial memory to mediate cache recovery and pilferage. Our results showed that the normal L.

Can Occupational Therapy Address the Occupational Implications of Hoarding?

Hoarding is often described as a medical disorder, defined by a persistent difficulty in discarding possessions and associated high levels of emotional distress when forced to part with these. This article will discuss how having a different view of hoarding, seeing hoarding as a daily occupation which provides value, purpose, and meaning and with a relationship to self-identity and life purpose, could offer alternate interventions to support an individual who hoards. The article will consider the components of hoarding activity and how these relate to health and wellbeing and doing, being, be

Visually mediated functioning improves following treatment of hoarding disorder.

BACKGROUND: Hoarding disorder (HD) is a highly debilitating psychiatric disorder that affects 2-6% of adults. Neuropsychological deficits in visual memory, detection, and categorization have been reported in HD. To date, no study has examined the relationship between neurocognitive functioning and treatment for HD. We aim to determine the association between neurocognitive functioning and treatment outcomes, as well as the impact of HD-specific treatment on cognitive functioning. METHODS: 323 individuals with HD were randomized to 20 weeks of peer- or clinician-led group behavioral treatment.

Hoarding disorder: a new diagnostic category in ICD-11?

Despite the long-held view that hoarding is a symptom of both obsessive-compulsive disorder and obsessive-compulsive personality disorder, increased evidence has emerged during the last 20 years suggesting that hoarding represents a distinct form of psychopathology. This study reflects the discussions on the nosological status of hoarding carried out by the WHO ICD-11 Working Group on the Classification of Obsessive-Compulsive and Related Disorders. The distinctiveness of hoarding is based on its having core symptoms that differ from those of other disorders, as well as distinctive neurobiolog

Hoarding Symptoms in Eating Disorders: An Observational Cross-Sectional Study.

OBJECTIVE: Hoarding behaviors have been reported in eating disorders (EDs), particularly those characterized by binge eating; however, research on this comorbidity is scarce. This cross-sectional observational study investigated hoarding symptoms in a community-based sample of individuals with lifetime ED diagnoses (N = 5927). METHOD: Participants were grouped by ED history: anorexia nervosa (AN) only, AN and another ED (AN Mixed), bulimia nervosa (BN) only, binge-eating disorder (BED) only, and both BN and BED (BN-BED). Hoarding symptoms were compared across these groups and to published dat

Written Imaginal Exposure for Hoarding Disorder: A Preliminary Pilot Study.

Hoarding disorder (HD) is marked by difficulty discarding possessions. Many refuse treatment or drop out, which may be due to treatment's incorporation of in-home decluttering, which is feared and avoided. Thus, strategies to prepare patients for decluttering/discarding are needed. Imaginal exposure (IE), or imagining one's worst fears about discarding, could be one such strategy. This pilot preliminarily tested a short-duration IE intervention compared with a control intervention. Over 3 days, adults diagnosed with HD (n = 32) were randomly assigned to either write about and imagine their wor

Animal hoarding cases in England: Implications for public health services.

Hoarding disorder is characterized by an accumulation of possessions due to excessive acquisition of or difficulty discarding possessions, regardless of their actual value and is estimated to affect 2-6% of the population. Animal hoarding, a distinct subset of hoarding disorder, has a significant public health impact on the humans involved, as well as animal welfare. Individuals exhibit self-neglect, apathy, social withdrawal and object hoarding; living within squalid, deteriorated, structurally unsafe and uninhabitable premises, alongside neglected animals. Cases are complex, costly and impac

Subjective cognitive complaints and objective cognitive impairment in hoarding disorder.

Individuals with Hoarding Disorder (HD) frequently complain of problems with attention and memory. These self-identified difficulties are often used as justification for saving and acquiring behaviors. Research using neuropsychological measures to examine verbal and visual memory performance and sustained attention have reported contradictory findings. Here we aim to determine the relationship between self-reported problems with memory and attention, objective memory and attention performance, and self-reported depression and anxiety symptoms in HD. Data was available for 319 individuals who p

Hoarding among Jewish Holocaust Survivors: Moving Toward a Theoretical Model.

BACKGROUND: Previously described as a subcategory of obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), hoarding disorder was added to the fifth Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-V) as a stand-alone diagnosis for the first time. The first formal research in the 1990s surprisingly found no connection between material deprivation early in life and hoarding; however, later studies linked early traumatic life experiences with hoarding. Subsequent familial studies demonstrated a genetic predisposition for hoarding. Emerging evidence suggests a link between a post-traumatic stress disorde

Obsessive compulsive disorder with and without hoarding symptoms: Characterizing differences.

OBJECTIVE: In recent years there has been some ambiguity about the way hoarding and OCD are related to each other. The present study examines the differences between persons with OCD/hoarding and OCD/non-hoarding and examines which characteristics are associated with the OCD/hoarding group. Information is established about prevalences, socio-demographical characteristics, OCD and related characteristics, OCD subtypes, comorbidity (depression, anxiety disorders and PTSD) and personality traits. METHODS: Data from baseline assessment of The Netherlands Obsessive Compulsive Disorder Association

Loneliness in hoarding disorder: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: According to attachment theory, loneliness may be a cause of hoarding symptoms. However, due to mixed findings, it is unclear whether people with hoarding disorder (HD) are lonelier than healthy and clinical controls, whether there is a significant positive association between loneliness and hoarding, and whether loneliness causes more severe hoarding. METHOD: We conducted a systematic review and included peer-reviewed quantitative cross-sectional, longitudinal, experimental and intervention research that measured hoarding and loneliness. We excluded hoarding due to other condit

Converting and hoarding driven by protein phosphorylation in Toxoplasma gondii.

Successful parasitism relies on the evasion of adversarial host responses. Wang et al. have recently shown that Toxoplasma gondii relies on the protein phosphatase 2A (PP2A) to cause persisting infections. The phosphatase controls the development of dormant parasite stages and the accumulation of sugar supplies.

Hoarding Disorder: The Current Evidence in Conceptualization, Intervention, and Evaluation.

Hoarding disorder is characterized by difficulty parting with possessions due to strong urges to save the items, leading to the excessive accumulation of items. High clutter levels result in varied personal, social, and legal consequences. Specialized treatments, including individual, virtual, and group cognitive and behavioral therapies, community-based interventions, and peer support approaches have shown preliminary effectiveness. Animal, attachment, and neurobiological models are expanding our understanding of the etiological bases of the disorder. Specialized populations such as children,

Exploring emotions and cognitions in hoarding: a Q-methodology analysis.

BACKGROUND: The cognitions and emotions of people prone to hoarding are key components of the dominant cognitive behavioural model of hoarding disorder. AIMS: This study sought to use Q-methodology to explore the thoughts and feelings of people that are prone to hoarding, to identify whether distinct clusters of participants could be found. METHOD: A 49-statement Q-set was generated following thematic analysis of initial interviews (n = 2) and a review of relevant measures and literature. Forty-one participants with problematic hoarding met various study inclusion criteria and completed the

Prevalence of Hoarding Disorder: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Currently there is uncertainty concerning the prevalence of Hoarding Disorder (HD) due to methodological issues in the evidence base. Estimates have widely ranged from between 1.5% and 6% of the general population. This systematic review and meta-analysis therefore aimed to summarise and reliably estimate the prevalence of HD by employing strict inclusion criteria and using studies with sufficiently large samples. A systematic literature search was conducted to identify all relevant prevalence studies. Inclusion criteria were studies that reported working age adult HD prevalence rates and had

A qualitative analysis of emotion and emotion regulation in hoarding disorder.

OBJECTIVE: The role of emotion regulation (ER) has been receiving increased attention in relation to various forms of psychopathology including hoarding disorder (HD). However, questionnaire designs are limited to finding associations of ER with symptoms or symptom groups, without finding out how such constructs might be involved in the disorder. METHODS: This study was a qualitative investigation of ER in a clinical HD sample (N = 11). RESULTS: Prominent themes provided support for ER difficulties in hoarding. In particular, difficulties with identifying and describing feelings, unhelpful a

Cognitive-behavioral therapy for hoarding in the context of contamination fears.

Difficulty discarding and excessive acquiring can be treated using specialized cognitive-behavioral treatment that includes motivational interviewing, skills training, practice sorting and discarding, and cognitive restructuring. Early psychotherapy efforts to treat hoarding have proved less effective than this combination of methods targeted at the characteristic features of hoarding. Treatment strategies are illustrated through a case example of a woman struggling with both hoarding and contamination concerns.

Refining the diagnostic boundaries of compulsive hoarding: a critical review.

Like most human behaviors, saving and collecting possessions can range from totally normal and adaptive to excessive or pathological. Hoarding, or compulsive hoarding, are some of the more commonly used terms to refer to this excessive form of collectionism. Hoarding is highly prevalent and, when severe, it is associated with substantial functional disability and represents a great burden for the sufferers, their families, and society in general. It is generally considered difficult to treat. Hoarding can occur in the context of a variety of neurological and psychiatric conditions. Although it

Family burden of compulsive hoarding: results of an internet survey.

Compulsive hoarding, the acquisition of and failure to discard large numbers of possessions, is associated with substantial health risk, impairment in functioning, and economic burden. Despite clear indications that hoarding has a detrimental effect on people living with or near someone with a hoarding problem, no empirical research has examined these harmful effects. The aim of the present study was to examine the burden of hoarding on family members. Six hundred sixty-five family informants who reported having a family member or friend with hoarding behaviors completed an internet-based surv

Inhibition of feeding and hoarding behaviors by phenylpropanolamine in the adult rat.

The mechanism by which phenylpropanolamine (PPA) reduces feeding and body lipid is unknown. To determine if malaise associated with PPA treatment mediates its anorexic action, the present study compared the actions of PPA on feeding and hoarding behavior with that of lithium chloride at dose levels that induce comparable conditioned taste aversions. Adult male rats were injected (IP) 30 minutes prior to a test of feeding and hoarding behavior with either 0.9% saline, 32 mg/kg lithium chloride or with 10 mg/kg, 20 mg/kg or 40 mg/kg PPA.
