With the introduction of the side-firing neodymium:yttrium-aluminum-garnet laser in the early 1990s laser prostatectomy became a widely used treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia. However, because of prolonged postoperative catheterization times, the lack of immediate effect, and severe postoperative dysuria, many urologists became disinterested in this procedure. Recently, as a result of advances in laser technology, namely, the holmium laser and interstitial laser prostatectomy, interest in lasers for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia has been rekindled. This paper will revi

The holmium laser has established an important role in urology, particularly in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and urolithiasis. Its light (wavelength 2140 nm) has a high coefficient of absorption in water, such that 95% of the laser energy is absorbed in 0.5 mm of water. Thus, the majority of the laser energy is contained superficially, imparting the holmium laser with excellent cutting and tissue ablation properties. It provides sharp incision with simultaneous hemostasis. Perhaps the most significant benefit of the holmium laser is its versatility when delivered through

The holmium laser is a recent addition to the urologist's armamentarium, being used primarily for the destruction of urinary calculi. Its use as a tool for ablation of the prostate has not been previously described. Our initial experience with 110 patients who have undergone a combination procedure using the Nd:YAG laser for standard circumferential coagulation followed by holmium laser ablation is reported. A further 32 patients who have had a holmium-only technique are described. In the patients who had the combination technique, the AUA Symptom Score improved from a mean value of 19.8 preop

PURPOSE: Holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP) is a surgical treatment option for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Many men develop retrograde ejaculation postprocedure, but there is conflicting evidence regarding sexual function outcomes post-HoLEP. We sought to examine significant variations in patient-reported erectile and ejaculatory function within 12 months post-HoLEP.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study for patients who underwent HoLEP between Nov 2018 and Feb 2022. Of the reviewed patients, 277 patients met inclusion criteria and completed pre and

INTRODUCTION: Holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP) is considered a size-independent gold standard for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), and there is no upper limit of prostate weight that can be treated. Tissue retrieval can be time-consuming in cases of significant prostatic enlargement, which may lead to intraoperative hypothermia. As there are few studies on perioperative hypothermia in HoLEP, we conducted a retrospective study of patients who underwent HoLEP at our hospital.
METHODS: The data of 147 patients who underwent HoLEP at our hospital were retrospectively collected

OBJECTIVE: Many studies have demonstrated the heat effect from the holmium laser lithotripsy can cause persistent thermal injury to the ureter. The purpose of this study was to elucidate the use of a modified ureteral catheter with appropriate firing and irrigation to reduce the thermal injury to the "ureter" during the ureteroscopic holmium laser lithotripsy in vitro.
METHODS: An in vitro lithotripsy was performed using a modified catheter (5 Fr) as the entrance for the irrigation and the holmium laser fiber while using the remaining space in the ureteroscopic channel as an outlet. Different

PURPOSE: We report our experience with long-term outcomes of holmium laser enucleation of the prostate during a period of 18 years.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We reviewed a prospectively collected database from March 1998 through June 2016 for patients who underwent holmium laser enucleation of the prostate for symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia as performed or supervised by a single expert surgeon. Demographic and perioperative data were collected, including scores on the I-PSS (International Prostate Symptom Score), quality of life, peak flow rate, post-void residual urine and prostate sp

PURPOSE: Although holmium laser enucleation of the prostate has been proven to be an excellent technique for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia, it has not been widely applied due to technical difficulties and longer operative time. We modified the current technique of enucleation and present our initial experience.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 189 patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia underwent prostatectomy with our modified technique for holmium laser enucleation of the prostate. Intraoperative and postoperative data were prospectively collected. For followup Internati

The aim of this work is to validate the clinical efficacy of the high-power holmium:YAG laser with percutaneous nephrolithotripsy (PCNL) in combination with ultrasound lithotripsy for complicated renal calculi. From November 2006 to December 2007, 60 patients with complicated renal calculi were treated with PCNL, where an F24 standard renal access tract was established by percutaneous renal puncture under the guidance of B-mode ultrasound, and stones were fragmented and cleared by high-power holmium laser in combination with ultrasound under an F20.8 nephroscope. Of the 60 patients with compli

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP) is an excellent surgical treatment for patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia, but surgical complications are not well described. We set out to determine the predictors of stress incontinence (SUI) after HoLEP during the learning curve.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective review of our institution's HoLEP database was performed. Patients were divided into two groups: No pads at 3 months (group 1); SUI and/or mixed incontinence necessitating ≥ one pad at 3 months (group 2).
RESULTS: Seventy-seven patients underwen

Prostatic calculi are classified into two types, endogenous and exogenous calculi, based on their origin. Endogenous calculi are commonly observed in elderly men; however, exogenous prostatic calculi are extremely rare. We report here the case of a 51-year-old man who suffered incontinence and pollakiuria with a giant exogenous prostatic calculus almost completely replacing the prostatic tissue. X-rays and computed tomography demonstrated a large calculus of 65 × 58 mm in the small pelvic cavity. The patient underwent a transurethral lithotripsy with a holmium-YAG laser and a total of 85 g of

The treatment and relapse rate of genital warts are significant problems. The aim of this observational study was to assess the efficacy of holmium laser treatment of genital warts. A total of 1500 outpatients with genital human papillomavirus-induced lesions presenting from August 2002 to June 2005 were treated with holmium laser. The effects and side-effects of treatment were observed and analysed. Of this large cohort, lesions were excised at the first visit in 1488 cases. Twelve cases were treated a second or third time in the event that the lesions were too large to be removed at the firs
