Examination of clutter, cleanliness, and hazards in home environments of home health care patients with high risk of infection: A multi-site observational study.

BACKGROUND: Despite high infection risk among home health care (HHC) patients, little is known about home environmental conditions that may affect infection prevention and control (IPC). METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study of 250 HHC patients and caregivers from 2 Medicare-certified agencies. In-home surveys and structured observations assessed household hazards and, in more detail, cleanliness and clutter. Multivariate linear regression examined associations between home environment and sociodemographic, clinical, and community factors. RESULTS: On average, at least 1 household ha

Systematic Review Looking at the Use of Technology to Measure Free-Living Symptom and Activity Outcomes in Parkinson's Disease in the Home or a Home-like Environment.

BACKGROUND: The emergence of new technologies measuring outcomes in Parkinson's disease (PD) to complement the existing clinical rating scales has introduced the possibility of measurement occurring in patients' own homes whilst they freely live and carry out normal day-to-day activities. OBJECTIVE: This systematic review seeks to provide an overview of what technology is being used to test which outcomes in PD from free-living participant activity in the setting of the home environment. Additionally, this review seeks to form an impression of the nature of validation and clinimetric testing

Evaluating Depth-Based Human Pose Estimation in Real-World Nursing Home Environments.

Human pose estimation in real-world indoor environments remains challenging due to privacy concerns, occlusions, varying numbers of people, and noisy sensor data. In this work, we investigate pose estimation from depth images captured over an extended period in a nursing home setting. We explore multiple input representations, including depth-only and silhouette-based representations, as well as depth-based Sobel gradient features. To systematically analyze the impact of model complexity and input representation, we design an experimental framework comparing lightweight Convolutional Neural Ne

Digital Compensation? Investigating the Moderating Role of the Home Learning Environment in the Effectiveness of Learning Apps.

Children already differ in their literacy and numeracy skills before school entry, which partly is due to differences in their home literacy and numeracy environments (HLE/HNE). Learning apps may serve as a compensatory resource when parents cannot provide adequate support. Based on this assumption, this study investigates whether learning apps predict gains in literacy and numeracy skills, and whether HLE/HNE quality moderates this relation. N = 500 children from Germany (Mage = 60.69 months, SD = 4.61) received either literacy, numeracy, or no learning apps for a period of six months before

Impact of Living Environment on Attachment Behaviour in Domestic Cats from Private Homes and Shelters.

Since cats often struggle to acclimate to laboratory settings, a key requirement for effective testing, we adapted Ainsworth's Strange Situation Test (SST) for use in environments familiar to the cats. We examined 82 cat-caregiver dyads from private households and animal shelters using a standardised five-phase video procedure comprising distinct phases of presence, separation, and reunion between the cats and their human caregivers. Seven attachment-related behaviours were recorded via focal animal sampling and analysed using mixed models. Significant differences were observed in exploratory

The crossroads of work and home: linkages between smoke-free policies at work and household environments.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco use causes over eight million global deaths annually, with seven million directly attributed to tobacco use and 1.2 million to second hand smoke (SHS). Smoke-free environments are crucial to counter SHS. Although India banned smoking in public places in 2008, SHS exposure remains high. Studies have noted that limiting smoking in workplaces, restaurants, etc., helps to reduce overall smoking and reduce SHS exposure. Under this background, the study explores the linkages between smoke-free workplaces and living in smoke-free homes in India. METHODS: The two rounds of the GAT

Effects of affordances in the home environment on children's personal-social, problem-solving, and communication skills.

BACKGROUND: Among the various factors forming the environment, most developmentalists are in agreement that the home is the primary agent for change in child growth and development. The present study investigated the effect of affordances in the home on personal-social, problem-solving, and communication skills of children between 18 and 42 months of age. This investigation extends work focusing on "motor" affordances as an environmental feature. METHODS: Using cross-sectional design, 251 families (124 boys and 127 girls) were evaluated using the Persian translation of Affordances in the Home

The Home Literacy Environment Is a Correlate, but Perhaps Not a Cause, of Variations in Children's Language and Literacy Development.

The home literacy environment is a well-established predictor of children's language and literacy development. We investigated whether formal, informal, and indirect measures of the home literacy environment predict children's reading and language skills once maternal language abilities are taken into account. Data come from a longitudinal study of children at high risk of dyslexia (N = 251) followed from preschool years. Latent factors describing maternal language were significant predictors of storybook exposure but not of direct literacy instruction. Maternal language and phonological skill

Hyperactive behaviour in the mouse model of mucopolysaccharidosis IIIB in the open field and home cage environments.

Mucopolysaccharidosis IIIB (MPS IIIB) is a lysosomal storage disorder characterized by severe behavioural disturbances and progressive loss of cognitive and motor function. There is no effective treatment, but behavioural testing is a valuable tool to assess neurodegeneration and the effect of novel therapies in mouse models of disease. Several groups have evaluated behaviour in this model, but the data are inconsistent, often conflicting with patient natural history. We hypothesize that this discrepancy could be due to differences in open field habituation and home cage behaviour. Eight-month

How are children's perceptions of the home environment associated with a general psychopathology factor across childhood?

BACKGROUND: Comorbidity and heterogeneity in psychiatric disorders may stem from a general psychopathology (p) factor influenced by both genetic and environmental factors. Although the relative contributions of these influences on psychopathology are established, the longitudinal associations between the p-factor and specific environmental exposures and the aetiology of these associations across development are not well understood. Here, we examine whether twin-rated home environment contributes to changes in the p-factor over time or, conversely, whether the p-factor influences twin-rated hom

Phonological Awareness Mediates the Relationship between DCDC2 and Reading Performance with the Influence of Home Environment.

Proficient reading requires critical phonological processing skill that interact with both genetic and environmental factors. However, the precise nature of the relationships between phonological processing and genetic and environmental factors are poorly understood. We analyzed data from the Genes, Reading and Dyslexia (GRaD) Study on 1,419 children ages 8 to 14 years from African-American and Hispanic-American family backgrounds living in North America. The analyses showed that phonological awareness mediated the relationship between DCDC2-READ1 and reading outcomes when parental education a

Detecting Impending Malnutrition of (Pre-) Frail Older Adults in Domestic Smart Home Environments.

Malnutrition is a well-known risk factor for deteriorated physical function, disability and loss in independence in older adults. An unintended loss in body weight of more than 5% in 3 months is one indicator for malnutrition. In this study we examined the relationship between meal preparation time, hand grip strength, and body weight in order to map impending nutritional problems using ambient sensors. Data were collected in the domestic environments of 20 (pre-) frail older adults aged 85.75 y (Standard Deviation: 5.19 y) over 10-months of observation. Collecting included physical function a

The Home Learning Environment of Primary School Children with Down Syndrome and those with Williams Syndrome.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Research on typically developing (TD) populations has shown that the home learning environment plays a significant role in cognitive development and learning, but very little is known about the home learning environment of children with Down syndrome (DS) or children with Williams syndrome (WS). The present study examined and compared, for the first time, the home learning environment of children diagnosed with DS and children diagnosed with WS to investigate whether different cognitive profiles were reflected in their home literacy and number experiences. The Home Literacy Environment as a Predictor of the Early Literacy Development of Children at Family-Risk of Dyslexia.

The home literacy environment (HLE) predicts language and reading development in typically developing children; relatively little is known about its association with literacy development in children at family-risk of dyslexia. We assessed the HLE at age 4 years, precursor literacy skills at age 5, and literacy outcomes at age 6, in a sample of children at family-risk of dyslexia (n = 116) and children with no known risk (n = 72). Developmental relationships between the HLE and literacy were comparable between the groups; an additional effect of storybook exposure on phoneme awareness was obser

Fungal chitin from asthma-associated home environments induces eosinophilic lung infiltration.

Development of asthma and allergic inflammation involves innate immunity, but the environmental contributions remain incompletely defined. Analysis of dust collected from the homes of asthmatic individuals revealed that the polysaccharide chitin is environmentally widespread and associated with β-glucans, possibly from ubiquitous fungi. Cell wall preparations of Aspergillus isolated from house dust induced robust recruitment of eosinophils into mouse lung, an effect that was attenuated by enzymatic degradation of cell wall chitin and β-glucans. Mice expressing constitutively active acidic mamm
