Honey pacifier use among an indigent pediatric population.

BACKGROUND: Use of honey pacifiers by infants presenting to a pediatric clinic at a county hospital in Houston, Texas, was observed by several of our staff members. Although we could not find any published studies linking the use of honey pacifiers to infant botulism, we also could not find any studies assessing the prevalence of honey pacifier use in general. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional, descriptive study using a novel survey that had 19 items. The survey was administered to the parents of children up to age 12 months presenting to a county hospital pediatric clinic for well-chil

Gastric cytoprotection and honey intake in albino rats.

Beneficial effect of honey has been widely reported particularly on wound healings, gastrointestinal disorders and as antibacterial agent. However, there is paucity of report on its cytoprotective effect on the gastric mucosa despite its common usage worldwide including Nigeria. This study was therefore carried out to evaluate the effect of this widely consumed substance on gastric mucosa using animal model and also to explore possible mechanism of its action on the gastric mucosa .Twenty male adult albino rats of Wistar strain, weighing between 210-220g were used in the experiment. They were

Hypotension, bradycardia and syncope caused by honey poisoning.

Honey intoxication, a kind of food poisoning, can be seen in the Black Sea region of Turkey and in various other parts of the world as well. In this study, 66 patients were hospitalized with a variety of symptoms including nausea, vomiting, salivation, dizziness, weakness, hypotension, bradycardia and syncope several hours after the ingestion of small amounts of honey. All patients had hypotension, and majority had bradycardia. These features resolved completely in 24 h with i.v. fluids and atropine, and none died. In conclusion, honey poisoning should be taken into consideration in the differ

Physiological and behavioral pharmacology of ethanol in honey bees.

Ethanol has been consumed by humans since the dawn of civilization and, over the course of millennia, a wide variety of ethanol-rich drinks have been produced across cultures. Traditionally, it was believed that only humans voluntarily consume ethanol and become inebriated by it. However, a growing amount of evidence is showing that several non-human animal species spontaneously consume ethanol in nature. Among these, there is the honey bee (Apis mellifera), which can find ethanol in decaying fruits and in the fermented nectar of flowers. Importantly, honey bees represent a useful animal model

A Comprehensive Review of the Effect of Honey on Human Health.

Honey is a nutritious, healthy, and natural food, to which antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties have been attributed, mainly due to its content of phenolic compounds. The aim of this review is to analyze the available evidence of the effect of honey on humans. Forty-eight clinical trials published between 1985 and 2022 were analyzed, with a total of 3655 subjects. More beneficial effects of honey intake than no or negative effects on different cardiovascular and metabolic risk factors, glucose tolerance, mucositis caused by chemo-radiotherapy, cough in children and woun

Honey and larvae in the treatment of foot gangrene: a reflection.

With the introduction of the Nursing and Midwifery Council's (NMC) (2015a) revalidation directive, nurses are required to demonstrate an ongoing commitment to providing safe and effective care by continually combining sound empirical evidence with reflective practice ( Sackett et al, 1996 ; Rolfe et al, 2011 ). Using Gibbs' (1998) model, I will reflect on an episode of care undertaken while I was on a recent placement. This reflective account will discuss the clinical use of honey and larvae therapy in the treatment of foot gangrene following meningococcal septicaemia. The psychosocial impact

Medicinal and cosmetic uses of Bee's Honey - A review.

Bee's honey is one of the most valued and appreciated natural substances known to mankind since ancient times. There are many types of bee's honey mentioned in Ayurveda. Their effects differ and 'Makshika' is considered medicinally the best. According to modern scientific view, the best bee's honey is made by Apis mellifera (Family: Apidae). In Sri Lanka, the predominant honey-maker bee is Apis cerana. The aim of this survey is to emphasize the importance of bee's honey and its multitude of medicinal, cosmetic and general values. Synonyms, details of formation, constitution, properties, and me

Honey and lozenges for children with non-specific cough.

BACKGROUND: Chronic non-specific cough is a chronic, dry cough of in the absence of identifiable respiratory disease or known aetiology. Although it is usually not reflective of an underlying severe illness, it does cause significant morbidity, and as such relief from it is often sought. The use of honey and lozenges to soothe upper respiratory tract irritation is common, inexpensive, and potentially more effective in treating the symptoms than pharmacological interventions. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the efficacy of honey and/or lozenges in the management of children with chronic non-specific c

A new approach to detecting sugar syrup addition to honey: Stable isotope analysis of hexamethylenetetramine synthesised from honey monosaccharides (fructose and glucose).

One of the most common types of adulteration of honey involves the addition of invert sugar syrups. A new method was developed to measure the stable isotope ratios of carbon and carbon-bound non-exchangeable (CBNE) hydrogen from specific molecular positions in fructose and glucose in honey. This was achieved through periodate oxidation of the sugars to produce formaldehyde, followed by reaction with ammonia to form hexamethylenetetramine (HMT). The preparation was simplified, optimized, and validated by isotopic analysis of replicate syntheses of HMT from fructose, glucose, sugar syrup and a r

Genetic divergence and functional convergence of gut bacteria between the Eastern honey bee Apis cerana and the Western honey bee Apis mellifera.

INTRODUCTION: The functional relevance of intra-species diversity in natural microbial communities remains largely unexplored. The guts of two closely related honey bee species, Apis cerana and A. mellifera, are colonised by a similar set of core bacterial species composed of host-specific strains, thereby providing a good model for an intra-species diversity study. OBJECTIVES: We aim to assess the functional relevance of intra-species diversity of A. cerana and A. mellifera gut microbiota. METHODS: Honey bee workers were collected from four regions of China. Their gut microbiomes were inves

In vitro activity of an engineered honey, medical-grade honeys, and antimicrobial wound dressings against biofilm-producing clinical bacterial isolates.

OBJECTIVE: Honey is recognised to be a good topical wound care agent owing to a broad-spectrum of antimicrobial activity combined with healing properties. Surgihoney RO (SH1) is a product based on honey that is engineered to produce enhanced reactive oxygen species (ROS) and has been reported to be highly antimicrobial. The objective was to investigate the ability of the engineered honey and its comparators to prevent biofilm formation in vitro. METHOD: We tested the ability of three medical-grade honeys SH1, Activon manuka honey (MH) and Medihoney manuka honey (Med), alongside five antimicro

Viruses and vectors tied to honey bee colony losses.

Commercial beekeepers in the US reported severe colony losses early in 2025, as colonies were being staged for their critical role in the almond pollination season in California. Average reported losses since the preceding spring exceeded 60%, with substantial variation among operations. Many colonies were still actively collapsing in January 2025, at which time pooled and individual samples were collected and then screened for levels of 13 known honey bee pathogens and parasites. Acute bee paralysis virus and other known viral pathogens were found at high levels in pooled bee samples from all

Manuka Honey in Craniofacial Wound Management: A Narrative Review.

BACKGROUND: Craniofacial wounds present unique management challenges owing to the aesthetic significance of the facial region, proximity to vital structures, risk of contamination from oral flora, and the frequent presence of exposed bone or hardware. Manuka honey, derived from the Leptospermum scoparium plant, possesses well-documented antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and wound healing properties attributable primarily to its methylglyoxal content, osmotic activity, and low pH. However, no review has specifically addressed its application in the craniofacial context. METHODS: A narrative re

Country specific hybridization of honey bees from lineage M.

BACKGROUND: Honey bees are essential pollinators supporting agricultural production and wild plant diversity. In evolutionary lineage M, some populations are threatened by genetic erosion caused by the widespread introduction of commercially bred queens. To assess this risk, wing images from existing and new datasets were used to assign them to 4 evolutionary lineages (A, C, M, and O). The new dataset consisted of 29,043 wing images representing 1,342 colony samples from 10 countries. RESULTS: Overall, 63.7% of colonies belonged to lineage M, whereas 27.5% were classified as A, 7.9% as C, and

Redox-Regulating Propolis- and Honey-Containing Hydrogels in Osteoarthritis.

Oxidative stress and persistent inflammation are central mechanisms in osteoarthritis (OA), contributing to chondrocyte dysfunction, mitochondrial impairment, extracellular matrix degradation, pain-related signaling, and progressive joint tissue remodeling. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) act not only as damaging agents but also as regulators of redox-sensitive inflammatory pathways, including NF-κB, MAPK, and Nrf2-related antioxidant responses. Accordingly, localized strategies capable of modulating the oxidative-inflammatory microenvironment may offer therapeutic advantages over non-targeted a
