Perspective: Hormones and immune development: bidirectional regulation between thyroid hormones and the immune system.

The immune system operates within a dynamic physiological environment shaped by systemic regulatory signals, among which endocrine factors are increasingly recognized as important modulators of immune function. Although thyroid hormones are well known for their roles in metabolism and development, their contribution to adaptive immunity, particularly in regulating T cell responses, remains incompletely understood. Emerging evidence suggests that thyroid-immune interactions are context-dependent across physiological and pathological conditions. In this Perspective, we propose that thyroid hormo

Use of exogenous hormones hormones and risk of papillary thyroid cancer (Washington, United States).

OBJECTIVES: Greater incidence of thyroid cancer in women than men, particularly evident during the reproductive years, has led to the suggestion that female hormones may increase risk of this disease. We conducted a population-based case-control study in women aged 18 to 64 years in three counties of western Washington State (United States) to assess the relation of use of exogenous hormones, including oral contraceptives (OC) and hormone replacement therapy (HRT), to risk of papillary thyroid cancer. METHODS: Of 558 women with thyroid cancer of the follicular epithelium diagnosed during 1988

Thyroid hormones and hearing loss.

Hearing loss is a growing global public health issue. Major causes of deafness include infection, genetic mutations, ototoxic drug exposure, aging and endocrine disorders. Thyroid hormone plays a critical role in the development and maturation of the mammalian auditory system. Thyroid dysfunction, the most common endocrine abnormality, frequently leads to hearing impairment. Nevertheless, this thyroid-related deafness is often underrecognized in both patients and clinicians. Previous studies have indicated that thyroid hormone regulates the development of the organ of Corti, the greater epithe

Sex, hormones, and lung health.

Sex plays an essential role as a biological variable in lung health, leading to observed differences in lung disease susceptibility. Some respiratory conditions are more common in women than men, especially after puberty, indicating the influence of ovarian hormones on disease mechanisms. Other conditions display sex disparities that begin in utero and progress throughout the life span. Preclinical and clinical studies have indicated that both sex chromosomes and hormones can influence lung disease outcomes, immune responses, susceptibility to viral and bacterial infection, and responses to en

Selfish evolution of placental hormones.

We hypothesize that some placental hormones-specifically those that arise by tandem duplication of genes for maternal hormones-may behave as gestational drivers, selfish genetic elements that encourage the spontaneous abortion of offspring that fail to inherit them. Such drivers are quite simple to evolve, requiring just three things: a decrease in expression or activity of some essential maternal hormone during pregnancy; a compensatory increase in expression or activity of the homologous hormone by the placenta; and genetic linkage between the two effects. Gestational drive may therefore be

Stress hormones and eating disorders.

AIMS: The aim of this paper is to emphasize the role of stress processes in the aetiology of eating disorders. METHODS: We have examined the literature for evidence that people with eating disorders might exhibit markers of stress and show signs of the "maltreated ecophenotype". RESULTS: Early adversity is more common among people with binge eating behaviours. The secondary effects of malnutrition, which are mostly marked in anorexia nervosa, may be an added stressor that could also contribute to the stress related phenotype. People with eating disorders have anomalies in brain structure, re

Sex Hormones Regulate SHANK Expression.

Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) have a higher prevalence in male individuals compared to females, with a ratio of affected boys compared to girls of 4:1 for ASD and 11:1 for Asperger syndrome. Mutations in the SHANK genes (comprising SHANK1, SHANK2 and SHANK3) coding for postsynaptic scaffolding proteins have been tightly associated with ASD. As early brain development is strongly influenced by sex hormones, we investigated the effect of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) and 17β-estradiol on SHANK expression in a human neuroblastoma cell model. Both sex hormones had a significant impact on the express

Hormones and the Coolidge effect.

The Coolidge effect is the renewal of sexual behavior after the presentation of a novel sexual partner and possibly occurs as the result of habituation and dishabituation processes. This re-motivation to copulate is well studied in males and is commonly related to sexual satiety, which involves several neurobiological changes in steroid receptors and their mRNA expression in the CNS. On the other hand, there are few reports studying sexual novelty in females and have been limited to behavioral aspects. Here we report that the levels of rat proceptive behavior, a sign of sexual motivation, decl

Bioidentical hormones for menopausal therapy.

'Bioidentical hormones' is a term created by the lay media to refer to chemicals derived from plants that are modified to be structurally identical to endogenous human hormones. These compounds include estradiol, estrone, estriol, progesterone, testosterone and dehydroepiandrosterone when prescribed for menopausal women. Patients assume bioidentical hormones are natural and safer than synthetic hormones with regard to the risk of developing breast cancer and other diseases, but there is little evidence to support this belief. Proponents of this therapy also support the use of salivary hormone

Alligators, contaminants and steroid hormones.

Steroids are essential for successful reproduction in all vertebrate species. Over the last several decades, extensive research has indicated that exposure to various environmental pollutants can disrupt steroidogenesis and steroid signaling. Although steroidogenesis is regulated by the hypothalamic-pituitary axis, it is also modified by various paracrine and autocrine factors. Furthermore, the classical two-cell model of steroidogenesis in the developing ovarian follicle, involving the granulosa and theca cells in mammals, may not be universal. Instead, birds and probably reptiles use the two

Sexual hormones in human skin.

The skin locally synthesizes significant amounts of sexual hormones with intracrine or paracrine actions. The local level of each sexual steroid depends upon the expression of each of the androgen- and estrogen-synthesizing enzymes in each cell type, with sebaceous glands and sweat glands being the major contributors. Sebocytes express very little of the key enzyme, cytochrome P450c17, necessary for synthesis of the androgenic prohormones dehydroepiandrosterone and androstenedione, however, these prohormones can be converted by sebocytes and sweat glands, and probably also by dermal papilla ce

Sleep-disordered breathing and hormones.

Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) is not only a problem of the upper airway but is a systemic condition with endocrine and metabolic interactions. The accumulating body of evidence shows that SDB induces changes in the serum levels or secretory patterns of several hormones. Conversely, various endocrine disorders and hormone therapies may induce, exacerbate or alleviate SDB. Much of the understanding of the interactions between hormones and sleep-disordered breathing derive from intervention studies with nasal continuous positive airway pressure therapy. Better understanding of hormones and bre

Helicobacter pylori and gut hormones.

Helicobacter pylori infection has been found to decrease the expression of antral somatostatin and to increase the release of the acid-stimulating hormone gastrin. The reversal of these changes in gut hormones by the eradication of H. pylori, and in-vivo and in-vitro studies in animals either infected with H. pylori or exposed to H. pylori-related materials may support the somatostatin-gastrin link theory in the pathophysiology of H. pylori infection. The following mechanisms have been proposed to explain the H. pylori infection-associated changes in gut hormones; (1) ammonia produced by H. py

Reproductive hormones after pancreas transplantation.

BACKGROUND: Reproductive hormone function after pancreas transplantation (PTX) is unknown as it has not been studied. METHODS: We prospectively studied PTX recipients to determine changes in reproductive hormones after PTX. Testosterone or estradiol, leutinizing hormone, follicle stimulating hormone, and prolactin were determined before and 1 year after PTX in 23 patients (10 women, 13 men) followed for more than 1 year after PTX. Of these, 11 received simultaneous kidney-PTX; 8 PTX only; and 4, PTX after kidney. Average age was 38.4+/-1.6 years and average duration of diabetes was 24.5+/-1.3

[Juvenile hormones, reality or myth?].

Recently, the "discovery" of so called "rejuvenating" pills, has attracted much interest in the media and has raised irrational expectations among the elderly population. These so called "rejuvenating drugs" are dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), a steroid hormone secreted by the adrenal cortex, and melatonin, an indol derivative, secreted by the pineal gland, both known since many years. Dehydroepiandrosterone is quantitatively by far the most important steroid in the human organism; it is a weak androgen, a small fraction of which is aromatized to estrogens in peripheral tissues. Plasma levels o

Women, hormones and blood pressure.

Raised blood pressure is an important risk factor for both coronary artery disease and stroke in women. In terms of exogenous sex hormones, use of premenopausal oral contraceptives has been consistently associated with higher blood pressure levels; both estrogenic and progestogenic components have been implicated. In contrast, a randomized trial has shown no effect of post-menopausal hormone use on blood pressure. Observational studies indicate a protective effect of postmenopausal estrogen use on coronary artery disease. This is probably largely mediated through effects on lipoproteins and no

[Alcohol and fertility: sex hormones].

Alcohol is a noxious substance with considerable effects on men's potency and fertility. In case of acute intoxication as well as in case of long-term effects of ethanol there is a significant decrease of testosterone and a consecutive increase of gonadotrophin LH resulting in primary hypogonadism. Moreover, chronic alcoholism leads to organic damages of the testes and the liver. Consequently the clinical symptoms and laboratory data show complex changes. Aside from the decrease of testosterone there is an increase of oestrogens (chiefly of estrone); thus increased oestrogenial effects are fou
