The Impact of an Oncology Hospital at Home Program on Health Care Costs.

INTRODUCTION: Hospital-at-home is an initiative to move health care services that have traditionally been provided in a hospital setting to a patient's home. The objective of this study was to assess the impact of the oncology Huntsman at Home (HH) hospital-at-home program on health care costs from the health care system's perspective. METHODS: Using a difference-in-difference approach, we compared health care costs between 169 oncology patients enrolled in HH and 198 similar patients who would have been eligible for HH but lived outside the HH service area. Costs were measured from the healt

Resource use and in-hospital costs after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage in the Netherlands.

INTRODUCTION: Aneurysmal Subarachnoid Hemorrhage (aSAH) is a severe condition requiring advanced interventions and intensive in-hospital care. The associated financial burden challenges resource allocation and healthcare sustainability. RESEARCH QUESTION: This study aimed to evaluate the in-hospital healthcare consumption and costs for patients hospitalised with aSAH. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A bottom-up approach was used to assess in-hospital healthcare consumption and costs for aSAH patients at a Dutch referral centre (November 2021-April 2024). Costs were calculated by multiplying resource c

Direct costs of severe cutaneous adverse reactions in a tertiary hospital in Korea.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: There are only a few reports on the direct costs of severe cutaneous adverse reactions (SCARs), including drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS), Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS), and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN), despite the tremendous negative impact these reactions can have on patients. We estimated the direct costs of treating SCARs. METHODS: Patients admitted to a tertiary teaching hospital for the treatment of SCARs from January 1, 2005 to December 31, 2010 were included. Patients who had experienced SCARs during their admission for other medica

In-hospital costs of diabetic foot disease treated by a multidisciplinary foot team.

BACKGROUND: The diabetic foot imposes significant burden on healthcare systems. Obtaining knowledge on the extent of the costs of diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) is of value to health care researchers investigating cost-effectiveness of interventions that prevent these costly complications. OBJECTIVES: To estimate the in-hospital costs associated with the treatment of DFUs by a multidisciplinary diabetic foot team. METHODS: Persons with DFUs presenting to our team in 2013 and 2014 were followed and use of care was estimated. Exclusion criteria were a single visit only and ulcers above the ankle.

Hospital costs for patients with lower extremity cellulitis: a retrospective population-based study.

OBJECTIVES: Hospital admissions for non-purulent lower extremity cellulitis (NLEC) are common and can be prolonged and costly. Newer treatment options and preventive strategies are expected to result in cost savings before implementation, but few studies have quantified the cost of conventional treatment. METHODS: Using the Rochester Epidemiology Project, the incidence of NLEC in Olmsted County, MN in 2013 was 176.6 per 100,000 persons. The subset of patients who required hospitalization for NLEC in 2013 was determined. Hospital admissions were analyzed retrospectively using standardized cost

Trends, Complications, and Costs for Hospital Admission and Surgery for Lumbar Spinal Stenosis.

UNLABELLED: MINI: Trends in lumbar spinal stenosis surgery are largely unknown outside of the United States. This population-based health record linkage study revealed that complex fusion surgery had a four-fold increase from 2003-2013 in Australia. This surgical procedure increased the risk of complications and resource use compared with decompression surgery alone. STUDY DESIGN: Population-based health record linkage study. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine trends in hospital admissions and surgery for lumbar spinal stenosis, as well as complications and resource use in Aus

[Direct costs of pharmacotherapy for acute leukemia at a Regional Hospital in Chile].

BACKGROUND: In Chile, leukemia is one of the diseases whose treatment is guaranteed by a special law called AUGE (universal access and explicit guaranties). Therefore, the knowledge of its treatment costs is of utmost importance. AIM: To determine and to characterize the direct costs of pharmacotherapy for leukemia at a regional hospital in Chile. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Data were retrospectively obtained from electronic and manual records of the hospital for all patients treated for leukemia between 2003 and 2006. Patients were classified into four groups: pediatric and adult patients treated

[Direct costs of acute day hospital care: results from a randomized controlled trial].

OBJECTIVE: So far only five randomized controlled trials on acute day hospital care have assessed direct health care costs and compared these with costs of conventional inpatient treatment. This paper aims to close this research gap for German speaking countries. METHOD: Another trial was conducted at the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, Dresden University of Technology. Using the Client Service Receipt Inventory interviews with patients at three time-points (admission, discharge, three months after discharge) assessed their utilization of health care services. Perioperative predictors of ICU and hospital costs in coronary artery bypass graft surgery.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Economic forces have precipitated intense interest in cost-saving practices for patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). While several preoperative variables have been implicated in higher costs, few studies have included perioperative factors. This study evaluated the predictive power of a preoperative mortality risk measurement (Parsonnet score) and of early extubation (< or = 6 h from ICU admission) in determining ICU and hospital costs. DESIGN: Multivariate correlational design. SETTING: University hospital in a large metropolitan area. PATIENTS: All

The role of changing clinical practices in the rising costs of hospital care.

To assess whether changes in clinical practice have contributed to rising hospital costs, we studied 2011 patients who were hospitalized at the University of California, San Francisco, in 1972, 1977, or 1982. For most of the 10 diagnoses studied, there was little change in total use of services by patients. In-hospital survival did not differ during the decade, and length of stay, numbers of special-care days, and use of laboratory services generally remained the same or declined. Only for patients with acute myocardial infarction did the use of imaging procedures increase substantially (e.g.,

Length of Hospital Stay, Hospitalization Costs, and Their Drivers in Adults with Diabetes in the Romanian Public Hospital System.

The aim of this analysis was to assess the costs associated with the hospitalizations of persons with diabetes in a Romanian public hospital. We performed a retrospective “top-down” cost analysis of all adult patients discharged from a tertiary care hospital with an ICD-10 primary or secondary code of diabetes mellitus (type 1, type 2, or specific forms) between 1 January 2015 and 31 December 2018. All costs were adjusted with the annual inflation rates and converted to EUR. We included 16,868 patients with diabetes and 28,055 episodes of hospitalization. The total adjusted hospitalization cos

Hospital days, hospitalization costs, and inpatient mortality among patients with mucormycosis: a retrospective analysis of US hospital discharge data.

BACKGROUND: Mucormycosis is a rare and potentially fatal fungal infection occurring primarily in severely immunosuppressed patients. Because it is so rare, reports in the literature are mainly limited to case reports or small case series. The aim of this study was to evaluate inpatient mortality, length of stay (LOS), and costs among a matched sample of high-risk patients with and without mucormycosis in a large nationally representative database. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis using the 2003-2010 Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project - Nationwide Inpatient Sample (HCUP-NIS)
