BACKGROUND: Absconding from inpatient care is associated with suicide risk in psychiatric populations. However, little is known about the real world context of suicide after absconding from a psychiatric ward or the experiences of clinical staff caring for these patients.

The results obtained during the first three years of a pathogen-free isolation unit containing five beds have shown that this type of unit can reduce the risk of infection in patients treated with intensive chemotherapy or in those who have granulocytopenia from various causes. It is suggested that treatment of cancer which involves these risks should be carried out routinely in sterile isolation units, and that it is urgent to build many more and much larger units.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The COVID-19 pandemic has upended the global healthcare systems. The surge in infections and sick critically ill patients has tested the resilience of healthcare infrastructures and facilities forcing organizations to quickly adapt and embrace emergency solutions. The paper proposes a decalogue of design strategies applicable both to new hospitals and to the refurbishment of existing hospitals.

BACKGROUND: Invasive aspergillosis (IA) is a significant problem in acute leukaemia patients. Construction work near hospital wards caring for immunocompromised patients is one of the main risk factors for developing invasive pulmonary aspergillosis (IPA).
AIM: To assess the impact of environmental control measures used during hospital construction for the prevention of IA in acute leukaemia patients.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was developed to evaluate the IA incidence in acute leukaemia patients with different environmental control measures employed during hospital construction.

In the course of construction of a new bone marrow transplantation (BMT) unit, six of nineteen children undergoing BMT in the adjacent ward area died of invasive pulmonary aspergillosis (IPA). Ward air samples confirmed that heavy fungal spore contamination had occurred. The introduction of laminar air flow (LAF) isolation terminated the outbreak and no subsequent cases of IPA have been documented in patients nursed entirely in LAF. LAF has not reduced the rates of other complications associated with BMT.

An outbreak of cryptosporidiosis occurred at a veterinary hospital, involving multiple species, including humans. The index case was an infected dairy calf that presented with diarrhea. Several other cases of cryptosporidial diarrhea subsequently developed during a 1-month period. The key features of this outbreak were the multiple species affected, the increased morbidity in immunocompromised neonates, and the failure of implemented control measures to contain the disease.

Between November 1982 and July 1984, five patients at a 110-bed pediatric hospital were diagnosed with invasive filamentous fungal infection; three had invasive aspergillosis (IA) and two had invasive zygomycosis (IZ). In August and September 1978, an outbreak of Legionnaires' disease occurred in Memphis, Tennessee.
