Hospital charges for pediatric heart transplant hospitalizations in the United States from 1997 to 2006.

BACKGROUND: Heart transplantation remains a resource-intensive therapy for children. However, data regarding change in costs over time are scarce. We tested the hypothesis that hospital charges for pediatric heart transplant hospitalizations would increase from 1997 to 2006 and assessed factors associated with hospital charges. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project Kids' Inpatient Database was performed on admissions surrounding heart transplantation for the years 1997, 2000, 2003, and 2006. The database is a nationwide sampling of pediatric hospital

An analysis of hospital-acquired bacteraemia in intensive care unit patients in a university hospital in Kuwait.

An analysis of hospital-acquired bacteraemia among ICU patients was carried out over a two-year period in order to determine the incidence, associated mortality rate and susceptibility pattern of causative pathogens. There was a high incidence of bacteraemia, occurring in 127 (18.4%) of 692 patients. Mortality attributable to nosocomial bacteraemia was 52% of the total 79 deaths from all causes. The highest mortality rate (58.5%) occurred in patients with fungal infections, whilst death from Gram-negative bacteraemia was only 17%. Over 98% of patients had underlying disease. Nearly half (46.8%

Coccidioidomycosis-Associated Hospitalizations, United States, 2016-2021.

Using a large hospital discharge database, we summarize 54 985 coccidioidomycosis-associated hospitalizations during 2016-2021 in the United States. Hospitalization rates per 100 000 population increased from 2.3 in 2016 to 3.2 in 2021. Our findings underscore the importance of clinical awareness and vigilance for coccidioidomycosis to achieve better patient outcomes.

Hospitalization rates from radiotherapy complications in the United States.

Hospitalizations due to radiotherapy (RT) complications result in significant healthcare expenditures and adversely affect the quality of life of cancer patients. Using a nationally representative dataset, the objective of this study is to identify trends in the incidence of these hospitalizations, their causes, and the resulting financial burden. Data from the National Inpatient Sample was retrospectively analyzed from 2005 to 2016. RT complications were identified using ICD-9 and ICD-10 external cause-of-injury codes. The hospitalization rate was the primary endpoint, with cost and in-hospit

Hospitalizations Associated With Strongyloidiasis in the United States, 2003-2018.

BACKGROUND: Strongyloides stercoralis is considered to be historically endemic in Appalachia and the American South, but recent surveillance data, especially data evaluating strongyloidiasis associated with hospitalization, are lacking in most parts of the United States. METHODS: We performed a population-based retrospective analysis on strongyloidiasis using the National Inpatient Sample from 2003 to 2018. Geographic distribution of strongyloidiasis associated hospitalization was assessed. Logistic regression was used to identify risk factors associated with strongyloidiasis. RESULTS: We id

The prevalence and impact of adolescent hospitalization to adult psychiatric units.

BACKGROUND: With increasing psychiatric hospitalizations among adolescents and constrained hospital resources, there are times when youth are hospitalized in adult inpatient psychiatry units. Evidence on the prevalence of this practice and associated impacts is lacking. AIMS: We sought to explore the prevalence, determinants, and outcomes related to the hospitalization of adolescents aged 12-17 years on adult inpatient psychiatry units in Ontario. METHODS: Using health administrative data, we constructed a cohort of adolescents with an inpatient psychiatric admission in Ontario (2007-2011).

Sexual Behavior in Patients with Psychosis Admitted to a Hospital Unit.

The sexual dimension is part of a person's functionality. Patients with mental disorders have the same sexual needs as any other person, although they may not always be recognized. This is a retrospective observational study to describe the information on sexuality of patients with mental disorders, admitted to an acute short-stay inpatient unit between 2011 and 2015. We analyzed 293 clinical histories of patients, comprising diagnoses in the ICD-10 (International Classification of Diseases) between F20 and F29, inclusively. The information collected corresponded to the beginning of hospitaliz

Oral Health of Patients Hospitalized in the Intensive Care Unit.

AIM: Oral hygiene technique is an important factor in maintaining the health and comfort of hospitalized patients given the frequent presence of oral biofilm and pathogens brought on by mouth breathing. This is an important practice to assist patients in intensive care, in particular those who are intu-bated and under mechanical ventilation because the realization of oral hygiene reduces the patient's risk of complications and length of hospitalization. The objective of this research was to evaluate the oral health condition of patients hospitalized in an intensive care unit (ICU) and to clari

Obstetric Admissions to the Intensive Care Unit in a Tertiary Hospital.

AIMS: A better understanding of the characteristics of obstetric patients admitted to an intensive care unit (ICU) could guide where the focus of obstetric training and awareness should be directed at to reduce further maternal mortality and morbidity. METHODS: We retrospectively assessed the charts of all women admitted during pregnancy or postpartum to a tertiary ICU over a 12-year period. We retrieved whether women were followed locally or referred from another hospital and whether the ICU admission was prophylactic or therapeutic. RESULTS: There were 190 admissions in 183 women. Online comments on smoking bans in psychiatric hospitals units.

OBJECTIVE: Individuals with mental health concerns are disproportionately affected by and suffer the negative consequences of tobacco use disorder, perhaps because smoking has historically been part of psychiatry's culture. In the early 1990s, psychiatric inpatient facilities were exempted from U.S. hospital smoking bans, in response to public outcry with national media attention. Almost 2 decades later, the current study characterizes online conversation about psychiatric hospital smoking bans. Previous commenting studies have demonstrated commenting's negativity, documenting the "nasty effec

Cysticercosis-related hospitalizations in the United States, 1998-2011.

Cysticercosis has become increasingly recognized as an important infection in the United States in recent decades. Despite its potential impact, there is a lack of comprehensive information on the nationwide burden of disease. To better define the burden of cysticercosis in the United States, we analyzed in-patient records using the Nationwide Inpatient Sample for 1998-2011 to estimate cysticercosis-related hospitalizations and patient/institutional characteristics. There were an estimated 33,060 (95% confidence interval [95% CI] = 29,610.5-36,510.3) cysticercosis-related hospitalizations nati

Incidence and trends of blastomycosis-associated hospitalizations in the United States.

We used the State Inpatient Databases from the United States Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality to provide state-specific age-adjusted blastomycosis-associated hospitalization incidence throughout the entire United States. Among the 46 states studied, states within the Mississippi and Ohio River valleys had the highest age-adjusted hospitalization incidence. Specifically, Wisconsin had the highest age-adjusted hospitalization incidence (2.9 hospitalizations per 100,000 person-years). Trends were studied in the five highest hospitalization incidence states. From 2000 to 2011, blastomyco

Leptospirosis-associated hospitalizations, United States, 1998-2009.

A small percentage of persons with leptospirosis, a reemerging zoonosis, experience severe complications that require hospitalization. The number of leptospirosis cases in the United States is unknown. Thus, to estimate the hospitalization rate for this disease, we analyzed US hospital discharge records for 1998-2009 for the total US population by using the Nationwide Inpatient Sample. During that time, the average annual rate of leptospirosis-associated hospitalizations was 0.6 hospitalizations/1,000,000 population. Leptospirosis-associated hospitalization rates were higher for persons >20 ye
