The decision for psychiatric hospitalization after deliberate self-poisoning (DSP) is not well understood. This study in a Spanish hospital replicated two US studies suggesting that schizophrenia is associated with smoking when compared with other severe mental illnesses. Neither antipsychotics nor institutionalism could explain this relationship. Seventy of the 100 schizophrenic and 53 of the 100 non-schizophrenic inpatients were current smokers. After correcting for confounding factors, schizophrenia increased the risk of smoking by 2- to 3-fold. Heavy smoking was not associated with schizophrenia.

We report the results of a year of regular psychiatric support in the Hematology Department (UTI-DH) at Santa Maria Hospital. During a six-month period, the total group of hospital inpatients suffering from leukemia, Hodgkin's disease or non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, were assessed, using a semi-structured interview. A prevalence of 30% of adjustment disorders (depression and/or anxiety) and 2% of organic mental syndromes was found employing the DSM-III-R diagnostic system. Medical charts of 150 consecutive admissions of multihandicapped children to a psychiatric hospital were examined to determine the extent and characteristics of abuse and neglect. A general hospital based psychiatric acute observation and treatment unit is described, and its operation over a one year period is reviewed. This seven-bed unit is designed to provide constant nursing observation and management, as well as intensive psychiatric treatment, in a secure, safe, and quiet environment for the most acutely psychiatrically ill patients. During the year under review, the unit had 330 admissions. Demographic, clinical, and treatment data are presented, and management of disturbed behavior, staff selection, and acceptance of the unit are discussed.

Seventy-five inpatients (0.74% of the patients in the hospital) were referred by different services over a 1-year period.
