Hot water bathing has been demonstrated to be an effective way to improve people's cardiovascular health in many studies. This study focused on seasonal physiological changes to provide suggestions on bathing methods based on season for hot spring bathing. Volunteers were recruited to the program of hot spring bathing at 38-40 °C in New Taipei City. Cardiovascular function, blood oxygen, and ear temperature were observed. There were five assessments for each participant during the study process: baseline, bathing for 20 min and 2 cycles *20 (2*20) min, resting for 20 min and 2*20 min after bat

In Croatia, a variety of geothermal springs with a wide temperature range and varied hydrochemical conditions exist, and they may harbor different niches for the distribution of microbial communities. In this study, 19 different sites, mainly located in central and eastern Croatia, were selected for primary characterization of spring hydrochemistry and microbial community composition. Using 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing, it was found that the bacterial communities that dominated most geothermal waters were related to Proteobacteria and Campylobacteria, while most archaeal sequences were re

The hot springs are home to a rich bacterial diversity which could be the source of enzymes, antibiotics and many other commercially important products. Most of the hot springs present in Fiji are unexplored and their analysis of microbial diversity could be of great interest in facilitating various industrial, agricultural and medicinal applications. This study is an attempt to evaluate the heavy metal concentration and to analyze the comprehensive bacterial diversity of two Fijian thermal mud pools, namely Sabeto and Tifajek. The two hot springs have a pH of 7.28 to 7.19 and a temperature of

For the sake of water conservation, a system for circulating hot water is widely used at public baths in Japan. Recently, large outbreaks of Legionella infection have occurred in public baths in Miyazaki and Kagoshima prefectures. More than three hundred persons were infected with Legionella pneumophila, and eight died. These outbreaks revealed that the Manual of Prevention Measures against Legionella Infection in a Circulating Hot Water Bath, which was published by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare in Japan in 2001, was not fully understood or conformed to by managers of the baths. The small killifish Aphanius almiriensis (Kottelat, Barbieri & Stoumboudi, 2007) inhabits from brackish springs to estuaries and coastal lagoons in the eastern Mediterranean basin. This study focused on the detailed characterization of Aphanius almiriensis from a hypersaline geothermal spring (Tuzla, Çanakkale, NW Anatolia), where extreme salinity (61.14 ppt in winter, January 2023) and temperature (42.7°C in summer, July 2023) conditions were observed. The obtained specimens of killifish in the sampling site, with a slightly convex dorsal head profile and a more angular ventral head profile,

Legionella pneumophila, the causative agent of Legionnaireś disease, is naturally found in aquatic habitats. The intracellular life cycle within protozoa pre-adapted the "accidental" human pathogen to also infect human professional phagocytes like alveolar macrophages. Previous studies employing the model organism Caenorhabditis elegans suggest that also nematodes might serve as a natural host for L. pneumophila. Here, we report for the first time from a natural co-habitation of L. pneumophila and environmental nematode species within biofilms of a warm water spring. In addition, we identified

Thermophilic bacterial cultures were isolated from a hot spring environment on hydrocarbon containing mineral salts media. One strain identified as Pseudomonas aeruginosa AP02-1 was tested for the ability to utilize a range of hydrocarbons both n-alkanes and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons as sole carbon source. Strain AP02-1 had an optimum growth temperature of 45 degrees C and degraded 99% of crude oil 1% (v/v) and diesel oil 2% (v/v) when added to a basal mineral medium within 7 days of incubation. Surface activity measurements indicated that biosurfactants, mainly glycolipid in nature, we

Transglutaminases (TGs) play important roles in the food industry, pharmacology, and biotechnology, but as protein cross-linkers, their complexes are stable, resistant, immunogenic, and potentially pathogenic. Many TGs have been characterized, but they operate in narrow temperature and pH range limits. In a research article in this issue, Clemens Furnes and colleagues describe a novel cold-adapted TG from Atlantic cod, which expands the operating boundaries to a lower temperature and a wider pH. In this accompanying commentary, we discuss how this TG opens new applications in cold environments

CONTEXT: Hot-spring therapy is occasionally used for the treatment of inflammatory diseases. Microorganisms might contribute to the anti-inflammatory functions seen in thermal mud therapies. Natural microorganisms, derived from traditional spa resorts, could be useful as a preventive strategy for alternative medical applications.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to find effective microalgae from prominent hot springs to use for the treatment of inflammatory diseases.
DESIGN: The research team performed an in-vitro study. Microalgae, derived from Beppu hot springs, were isolated and homoge

Geothermal installations in Europe generate Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material (NORM) as mineral and organic precipitates in wellbore casings, pipelines, heat exchangers, and filters. Naturally occurring radionuclides (NOR) of and progeny are released from reservoir rocks together with natural organic matter, while synthetic organic compounds from scale and corrosion inhibitors add to the total organic content of geothermal brines. NOR release from reservoir rocks and mechanisms of fractionation (i.e. physical and chemical separation of radionuclides to phases of matter resulting to part

Populations of the acidophilic purple nonsulfur bacterium Rhodopila globiformis were identified in two geographically distinct thermal areas in Yellowstone National Park (Wyoming, USA), as confirmed by 16S rRNA gene sequencing and detection of characteristic methoxylated ketocarotenoids. Microcosm-based carbon uptake assays where oxygenic photosynthesis was excluded via addition of 3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea yielded a light-driven dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) assimilation rate (7 ± 2 mg C g C-1 h-1) comparable to those of highly productive algal mats in acidic hot springs, sug

Legionella spp. is widespread in many natural and artificial water systems, such as hot water distribution networks, cooling towers, and spas. A particular risk factor has been identified in the use of whirlpools and hot tubs in spa facilities and public baths. However, there has been no systematic synthesis of the published literature reporting legionellosis cases or outbreaks related to swimming/spa pools or similar environments used for recreational purposes (hot springs, hot tubs, whirlpools, natural spas). This study presents the results of a systematic review of the literature on cases a

Field in-situ sinter growth studies have been carried out in five geochemically very different Icelandic geothermal areas with the aim to quantify the effects of water chemistry, (e.g. silica content (250 to 695 p.p.m. SiO(2)), salinity (meteoric to seawater), pH (7.5 to 10)), temperature (42-96 degrees C) and microbial abundance (prevalence, density) on the growth rates, textures and structures of sinters forming within and around geothermal waters. At each location, sinter growth was monitored over time periods between 30 min and 25 months using glass slides that acted as precipitation subst

A 62-year-old male with a 20-year history of diabetes and three-year history of adult T-cell lymphocytic leukemia developed a systemic infection with Dactylaria gallopava. At autopsy the fungus was found in the brain, lungs, liver, spleen, and kidney. The organism has caused disease in chickens and turkey poults and has been found in chicken litter, hot springs, and the effluent of a thermonuclear reactor. This report documents the second human infection and the first case of disseminated human dactylariosis.

BACKGROUND: Between 2009 and 2019 opioid-involved fatal overdose rates increased by 45% and the average opioid dispensing rate in Wyoming was higher than the national average. The opioid crisis is shaped by a complex set of socioeconomic, geopolitical, and health-related variables. We conducted a vulnerability assessment to identify Wyoming counties at higher risk of opioid-related harm, factors associated with this risk, and areas in need of overdose treatment access to inform priority responses.
METHODS: We compiled 2016 to 2018 county-level aggregated and de-identified data. We created ris

Microbial communities of geothermal habitats are central to understanding the evolution of life on Earth. Metagenomics has provided insight into the role of viruses in shaping microbial diversity of complex environments. However, identification of novel viruses is constrained by lack of marker genes and low nucleotide similarities between related viral taxa. While microbial and viral diversity have been explored in terrestrial hot springs and hydrothermal vent systems, other volcanic features remain underexplored. Fumaroles (steam vents) are geothermal features that heat groundwater with magma

Naegleria fowleri is a deadly human pathogen recognized as the causative agent of Primary Amoebic Meningitis (PAM). N. fowleri is commonly found in warm freshwater environments such as natural or man-made lakes, hot springs, and resort spas frequented by tourists. PAM infections have a mortality rate between 95 and 99% with minimal progress being made toward a successful treatment therapy. We report the case of a 12-year old American female who survived a PAM infection and propose a new drug therapy which includes the antimicrobial drug Miltefosine.

Myiasis is a rare infestation of any part of the body by larvae of Diptera. Cutaneous myiasis, the most common form seen in tropical climates of Central America, South America and Africa, are extremely rare in the United States. An extraordinary case of cutaneous myiasis was seen in Hot Springs in a 71-year-old healthy white male upon his return from the rain forest of Costa Rica. Manual extraction of one of the larvae by the patient and surgical excision of three other separate subcutaneous larvae were diagnostic and therapeutic in this case.

Geothermal systems of Kanchanaburi Province in western Thailand constitute important hydrothermal resources yet represent potential reservoirs of geogenic contaminants. Despite increasing utilization, the combined health risks posed by heavy metals and naturally occurring radionuclides under variable hydrogeochemical conditions remain poorly understood. This study presents an integrated, interannual comparative assessment of trace constituents in major geothermal springs and adjacent groundwater, based on datasets collected in November 2023 and November 2024. The analytical results indicate pe
