Faecal cortisol metabolites, body temperature, and behaviour of beef cattle exposed to a heat load.

Feedlot cattle are at times exposed to high environmental temperatures. Faecal cortisol metabolites were related to possible indicators of heat stress that could be measured under field conditions: respiratory dynamics (respiration rate), body surface temperature and adaptive behaviours, such as water consumption, posture (standing, lying), and activity (eating, drinking and rumination). Twelve (12) yearling Black Angus steers were divided into two treatment groups: a hot treatment (HOT; n = 6) and a thermoneutral-treatment (TN; n = 6) and individually housed in a climate-controlled facility a

Hot Deformation Behavior and Microstructure Evolution Mechanisms of Ti6Al4V Alloy under Hot Stamping Conditions.

Through the study of the thermal rheological behavior of Ti6Al4V alloy at different temperatures (500 °C, 600 °C, 700 °C, and 800 °C) and different strain rates (0.1 s-1, 0.05 s-1, 0.01 s-1, and 0.005 s-1), a constitutive model was developed for Ti6Al4V alloy across a wide temperature range in the hot stamping process. The model's correlation coefficient reached 0.9847, indicating its high predictive accuracy. Hot processing maps suitable for the hot stamping process of Ti6Al4V alloy were developed, demonstrating the significant impact of the strain rate on the hot formability of Ti6Al4V alloy

The effect of exercise in cool, control and hot environments on cardioprotective HSP70 induction.

A number of environmental and metabolic stimuli rapidly induce the expression of several highly conserved proteins such as heat shock proteins (HSPs) or stress proteins. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a single bout of submaximal exercise in varying ambient temperatures on cardiac and skeletal muscle. Adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly placed in one of three ambient temperature groups; control (23 degrees C), hot (41 degrees C) and cool (11 degrees C). Each exercise bout consisted of treadmill running at 17 m/min and 0% grade. Tissue HSP70 levels for all g

The influence of drink temperature on thermoregulatory responses during prolonged exercise in a moderate environment.

Nine males cycled at 53% (s = 2) of their peak oxygen uptake (VO(2peak)) for 90 min (dry bulb temperature: 25.4 degrees C, s = 0.2; relative humidity: 61%, s = 3). One litre of flavoured water at 10 (cold), 37 (warm) or 50 degrees C (hot) was ingested 30 - 40 min into exercise. Immediately after the 90 min of exercise, participants cycled at 95%VO(2peak) to exhaustion to assess exercise capacity. Rectal and mean skin temperatures and heart rate were recorded. The gradient of rise in rectal temperature was influenced (P < 0.01) by drink temperature. Mean skin temperature was highest in the hot

Temperature effects on incidence of surgery for acute type A aortic dissection in the Nordics.

We aimed to investigate a hypothesised association between daily mean temperature and the risk of surgery for acute type A aortic dissection (ATAAD). For the period of 1 January 2005 until 31 December 2019, we collected daily data on mean temperatures and date of 2995 operations for ATAAD at 10 Nordic cities included in the Nordic Consortium for Acute Type A Aortic Dissection (NORCAAD) collaboration. Using a two-stage time-series approach, we investigated the association between hot and cold temperatures relative to the optimal temperature and the rate of ATAAD repair in the selected cities. T

The lagged effect and attributable risk of apparent temperature on hand, foot, and mouth disease in Changsha, China: a distributed lag non-linear model.

Hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) is the leading Category C infectious disease affecting millions of children in China every year. In the context of global climate change, the understanding and quantification of the impact of weather factors on human health are particularly critical to the development and implementation of climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies. The aim of this study was to quantify the attributable burden of a combined bioclimatic indicator (apparent temperature) on HFMD and to identify temperature-specific sensitive populations. A total of 123,622 HFMD cases

Risks of hyperthermia associated with hot tub or spa use by pregnant women.

There are a limited number of human studies linking hot tub or spa use during early pregnancy to increased risks for neural tube defects (NTDs) or spontaneous abortion. However, these data can be considered in the context of human studies that have demonstrated an association between high maternal fever in early pregnancy and NTDs. In addition, there is a large volume of animal literature suggesting that, regardless of the heat source, an elevated core maternal temperature at or above the threshold of 2 degrees C over baseline, as well as timing and duration of exposure, are the critical facto

The influence of air humidity on human heat stress in a hot environment.

This article aims to present the physical adaptation capabilities of a human, seen as a response to extreme hot and dry or hot and humid conditions. Adaptation capabilities are expressed as safe exposure time in two variants: at rest and during physical activity. The study shows the results of calculations of the variability over time of the core temperature and skin temperature as well as heat balance. Calculations were made according to Standard No. EN ISO 7933:2005 on the basis of assumed and actual meteorological data. The results of the calculations show that in these conditions a hot but

Association between hot beverage intake and gastric cancer risk: a prospective cohort study from the UK Biobank.

Hot beverage consumption has been hypothesized to increase the risk of esophageal cancer; however, its impact on gastric cancer (GC) is still inconclusive. This study aimed to investigate the prospective associations between hot beverage intake and the risk of GC. We examined the association between daily consumption and preferred temperature of hot beverages (tea and coffee) and the incidence of GC in 328 752 UK Biobank participants. The consumption of beverages and preferred temperature were collected using a food frequency questionnaire. We applied Cox proportional hazard regression to esti

Fabrication and Characterization of EVA Resins as Adhesives in Plywood.

The practical problem of free formaldehyde pollution in the plywood industry is that polyethylene films have been shown to be able to replace some urea-formaldehyde resins for wood adhesives. To broaden the variety of thermoplastic plywood, reduce the hot-press temperature, and save energy consumption, an ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) film was selected as a wood adhesive to manufacture a novel wood-plastic composite plywood via hot-press and secondary press processes. The effects of the hot-press and secondary press processes at different levels on the physical-mechanical properties of EVA plyw

Lagged and Nonlinear Effects of Temperature Extremes on Mortality in US Federal Prisons: A Case-Crossover Study, 2009-2021.

BACKGROUND: Temperature extremes are becoming more common due to climate change. Due to infrastructural issues and the demographic characteristics of the incarcerated population, incarcerated people are at high risk of poor health outcomes during extreme temperature events. However, limited empirical evidence exists, with no prior studies on US federal prisons. Our goal was to estimate associations between ambient temperature and all-cause mortality in federal prisons. METHODS: Data on mortality in federal prisons from 2009 to 2021 were linked with daily mean temperature data. We employed a c

Impacts of ambient temperature on the burden of bacillary dysentery in urban and rural Hefei, China.

Bacillary dysentery continues to be a major health issue in developing countries and ambient temperature is a possible environmental determinant. However, evidence about the risk of bacillary dysentery attributable to ambient temperature under climate change scenarios is scarce. We examined the attributable fraction (AF) of temperature-related bacillary dysentery in urban and rural Hefei, China during 2006-2012 and projected its shifting pattern under climate change scenarios using a distributed lag non-linear model. The risk of bacillary dysentery increased with the temperature rise above a t
