The objective was to describe clinical findings and pain patterns following the provocation by activities of daily living (ADL) in women suffering from pregnancy-related post-natal pelvic pain 6-12 months after delivery. Forty-one informants answered questionnaires regarding pain characteristics in respect to 14 different ADL. All informants had bilateral pain, and typically it was described as an aching pain in the areas of the posterior superior iliac spines and in the symphyseal region. Running was the most provocative activity, followed by domestic work and by activities involving pushing

Healthcare-associated myiasis (maggot infestation) can have complications that go well beyond the medical consequences of the infestation for patients, their families, and facilities. Prevention of healthcare-associated myiasis requires effort on two fronts: minimizing patient risk factors and reducing fly populations in the healthcare environment. If myiasis occurs, intervention must be swift, thorough, and interdisciplinary. The first priority always is the well-being of the patient. Preservation and identification of the maggots can help determine the likely timing and circumstances that le

INTRODUCTION: Longitudinal data on how acute respiratory illness (ARI) affects behavior, namely school or work participation, and nonpharmaceutical intervention (NPI) usage before and during the COVID-19 pandemic is limited. The authors assessed how ARIs and specific symptoms affected school, work, and health-related behaviors over time.
METHODS: From November 2019 to June 2021, participating households with children in King County, Washington, were remotely monitored for ARI symptoms weekly. Following ARIs, participants reported illness-related effects on school, work, and NPI use. Using log

According to a biopsychosocial framework, personal and environmental factors might be mediators or facilitators/barriers, respectively, to functioning. However, it is not known how these factors can impact independence in household chores in children/adolescents with Down syndrome (DS). This study explored whether and how personal/environmental factors are associated with the independence level in household chores of children/adolescents with DS in Brazil. Caregivers of twenty-eight children/adolescents with DS were interviewed using the CHORES and a standardized questionnaire about personal (

This article discusses how large lottery winnings are experienced and used by the winners. The study draws on a survey of 420 Swedish winners, which is analyzed against the background of previous research from the USA and Europe. The analyses show that winners are cautious about realizing any dreams of becoming someone else somewhere else. This result contradicts theories suggesting that identities are being liquefied by the commercially driven consumer culture in affluent Western societies. In contrast, the article concludes that winners generally try to stay much the same, but on a somewhat

Volatile halogenated organic chemicals are found in indoor and outdoor air, often at concentrations substantially above those in remote, unpopulated areas. The outdoor ambient concentrations vary considerably among sampling stations throughout the United States, as well as diurnally and daily. The vapor pressures and air-water equilibrium (Henry's Law) constants of these chemicals influence considerably the likely relative human exposures for the air and water routes. Volatilization of chemicals from indoor uses of water can be a substantial source of exposure, as shown for radon-222. Measurem

Swine production work is a risk factor for nasal carriage of livestock-associated (LA-) Staphylococcus aureus and also for skin and soft tissue infection (SSTI). However, whether LA-S. aureus nasal carriage is associated with increased risk of SSTI remains unclear. We aimed to examine S. aureus nasal carriage and recent (≤3 months prior to enrollment) SSTI symptoms among industrial hog operation (IHO) workers and their household contacts. IHO workers and their household contacts provided a nasal swab and responded to a questionnaire assessing self-reported personal and occupational exposures a

The aims of the present study were to assess the effects of maternal use of domestic chemicals during pregnancy on wheezing and lung function in children aged </=8.5 yrs and to explore the potential modifying effect of atopy. In the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children, a cohort study, a maternal composite household chemical exposure (CHCE) score was derived. Wheezing phenotypes from birth to age 7 yrs were assigned on the basis of reported wheeze. Lung function (forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV(1)), forced vital capacity (FVC), forced midexpiratory flow between 25 and 75

The effect of production failure or some other shock on household income and food supply depends upon: (a) the pattern of household income, and (b) its ability to compensate for any deficit which may have occurred, for example, by the sale of assets or finding additional paid employment. The corollary is that the prediction of the likely effect of some event on the future state of the economy or food supply of a population of households requires an understanding of the economy of the households concerned and the economic context to which these relate. This paper describes an attempt to develop

BACKGROUND: Chronic diseases contribute to about half of the adult disease burden in the South Asian region. Meanwhile, physical activity levels are declining despite the global evidence of its role in the prevention of chronic diseases. While there are a plethora of systematic reviews on the effects of physical activity on chronic diseases, there has not yet been a synthesis of the evidence concerning the nature of this relationship among people living in South Asian countries incorporating multiple chronic diseases and a focus on physical activity domains. The aim of this protocol is to desc

OBJECTIVE: Epilepsy is associated with substantial health-related and economic burden, and prior spillover research has largely focused on caregivers. Little is known about the impact of epilepsy on other adults living in the same household. This study examined household-level spillover effects associated with epilepsy on mental health, productivity, and health care utilization and expenditures among adults without epilepsy.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study used 2017-2023 Medical Expenditure Panel Survey data to analyze adults aged 18 years and older without epilepsy living in households w

South Africa has the largest ART programme in the world. ART is provided within the context of the universal test and treat strategy. Sustained high levels of ART adherence are required to ensure viral suppression and prevent ART-drug resistance. However, poor ART adherence remains a challenge in South Africa. While much research has focused on individual - and community-level factors influencing adherence, household-level factors remain under-researched. This study sought to qualitatively examine the role of household-related factors in ART adherence among 15 newly initiated people living wit

OBJECTIVES: Cleaning work involves potential exposures to physical, chemical, biological and psychosocial hazards, which might increase the risk of birth defects. Yet, there is limited research focused on maternal occupation in cleaning jobs and the risk of birth defects. We investigated the association between maternal occupation in cleaning-related jobs during early pregnancy and selected birth defects in the National Birth Defects Prevention Study, a case-control study from 1997 to 2011.
METHODS: Mothers self-reported job details, which were classified by occupational epidemiologists into

BACKGROUND: The San Francisco Bay Area was the first region in the United States to enact school closures to mitigate SARS-CoV-2 transmission. The effects of closures on contact patterns for schoolchildren and their household members remain poorly understood.
METHODS: We conducted serial cross-sectional surveys (May 2020, September 2020, February 2021) of Bay Area households with children to estimate age-structured daily contact rates for children and their adult household members. We examined changes in contact rates over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic, including after vaccination of ho

Medical Financial Assistance (MFA), a key safety net for low-income groups in China, may exert incentive or welfare dependency effects on non-farm labor supply, an issue critical to assessing the effectiveness of medical security policies. Using two-wave household panel data, this study employs two-way fixed effects models to evaluate MFA's impact on the non-farm labor supply (participation rate and working time) of low-income rural households, distinguishing between the effects of eligibility attainment and increased assistance amounts. The results show that: (1) MFA eligibility significantly

BACKGROUND: Regulating risk, freedom of action, and autonomy in decision making are problems shared by both caregivers and residents in long term care settings, and may become the subject of tension and constant negotiation.
OBJECTIVE: This study focuses on long term care staff and management perceptions of day to day life in a care community which has gone through a culture change transition, where small residentially scaled households replace large instutional models of care. In each household, the setting is considered to be home for the 8-12 residents, creating a major shift of roles for
