Zebrafish are a popular model organism for performing in vivo studies, partly due to being considered inexpensive to house and maintain. Yet, commercial housing systems are typically cost-prohibitive to smaller research groups. Multiple custom-built zebrafish housing systems exist, but have issues with inconsistent water conditions, poor water cycling rates, and fragile housing tanks. These design issues reduce the viability of these systems for long-term research programs. In this article, we present a custom-built recirculating zebrafish housing rack, which is novel, affordable, and easy to

A key challenge to ensuring no one is left behind in the green transition lies in the persistent segregation of urban populations and the unequal distribution of environmental costs and benefits. Residential segregation has long reinforced socioeconomic and racialized disparities, and climate change introduces new dimensions to these injustices as adaptation policies increasingly shift financial and environmental burdens onto marginalized communities. While housing plays a central role in shaping exposure and resilience, the role of housing tenure-especially ownership arrangements beyond marke

IMPORTANCE: Housing instability may worsen control of type 2 diabetes outcomes.
OBJECTIVE: To estimate the association between stable vs unstable housing and type 2 diabetes outcomes.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study analyzed electronic health record data of adults with type 2 diabetes from US community-based health centers from June 2016 to April 2023. Targeted minimum loss estimation was used to examine the association between having vs not having housing instability and subsequent type 2 diabetes outcomes, adjusting for age, date of housing instability assessment, sex,

Researchers and policymakers have used a four-pillar framework- condition, consistency, context, and cost-to describe the characteristics of housing that are important for health equity. We propose adding a fifth pillar: care and connection. Housing for care and connection refers to the housing design, institutional policies, and housing programs that strengthen social connections, caregiving relationships, access to resources, and a sense of self in community. Attending to these needs in housing is especially important for people who are in transition in and out of homelessness, living in pov

Housing instability for low-income renters has drawn greater attention recently, but measurement has limited research on policies to stabilize housing. Address histories from consumer reference data can be used to increase the quantity and quality of research on low-income renters. Consumer data track housing moves throughout the entire United States for most of the adult population. In this article, I show that such data can measure housing stability for groups with very low income and extreme instability. For example, the data can track housing moves during natural disasters, at demolition o

OBJECTIVE: To assess the extent to which housing instability is associated with gaps in health insurance coverage of preschool-age children.
METHODS: Secondary analysis of data from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study-Birth Cohort, a nationally representative study of children born in the United States in 2001, was conducted to investigate associations between unstable housing-homelessness, multiple moves, or living with others and not paying rent-and children's subsequent health insurance gaps. Logistic regression was used to adjust for potentially confounding factors.
RESULTS: Ten perce

The United States has experienced dramatic increases in both incarceration rates and the population of insecurely housed or homeless persons since the 1980s. These marginalized populations have strong overlaps, with many people being poor, minority, and from an urban area. That a relationship between homelessness, housing insecurity, and incarceration exists is clear, but the extent and nature of this relationship is not yet adequately understood. We use longitudinal, administrative data on Michigan parolees released in 2003 to examine returning prisoners' experiences with housing insecurity a

For many poor Americans, having a decent home and suitable living environment remains a dream. This lack of adequate housing is not only a burden for many of the poor, but it is harmful to the larger society as well, because of the adverse effects of inadequate housing on public health. Not only is the failure to provide adequate housing shortsighted from a policy perspective, but it is also a failure to live up to societal obligations. There is a societal obligation to meet the housing needs of everyone, including the most disadvantaged. Housing assistance must become a federally-funded entit

As hospital budgets in Ontario (and elsewhere) continue to shrink in the face of governmental fiscal pressure, bed closures lead to the discharge of increasingly vulnerable persons. Many of these persons have no family and no obvious place to go. Community supports to assist people outside the hospitals are not provided at a level commensurate with the need. The result is inadequate housing, social isolation, non-existent care and, in too many cases, reinstitutionalization and/or preventable deaths. This paper describes the process by which vulnerable adults wind up in unsuitable community set

Social determinants of health (SDOH), including housing insecurity, have been linked to poorer lung cancer outcomes. We investigated the relationship between housing status and overall survival (OS) of people with lung cancer. Our study examined all patients with lung cancer evaluated at Boston Medical Center (BMC), a tertiary care academic medical center and New England's largest safety-net hospital, between 2015 and 2021. Data was collected from electronic health records and THRIVE, a program that screens and refers for SDOH. We conducted univariable and multivariable survival analyses on 34

As permanent supportive housing (PSH) is the main strategy promoted to reduce homelessness, understanding how PSH resident profiles may be differentiated is crucial to the optimization of PSH implementation - and a subject that hasn't been studied yet. This study identified PSH resident profiles based on their housing conditions and service use, associated with their sociodemographic and clinical characteristics. In 2020-2021, 308 PSH residents from Quebec (Canada) were interviewed, with K-means cluster analysis produced to identify profiles and subsequent analyses to compare profiles and PSH

This study examines whether routine, low-cost service use changes in the transition from homelessness to permanent supportive housing (PSH) and explores whether housing model, neighbourhood and level of case management engagement affect utilisation of routine services. Data come from a prospective longitudinal study of adults experiencing homelessness who entered PSH in Los Angeles between 2014 and 2016 and participated in four interviews: pre-housing (i.e., while experiencing homelessness), and 3, 6 and 12 months after move-in. Mixed effects logistic regression assessed the effects of demogra

AIMS: To explore to what extent type of residence (sheltered housing or ageing in place) contributes to thriving and well-being in older adults, when controlling for age, sex, living alone, being a widow and adjusting for functional status, self-rated health, and depressive mood.
DESIGN: A matched cohort study.
METHODS: A self-report survey was sent out to a total population of residents in all sheltered housings in Sweden and a matched control group ageing in place (N = 3,805). The data collection took place between October 2016-January 2017.
RESULTS: The interaction analyses related to th

This study was conducted to provide commercial pig farms with information about group housing systems for sows in accordance with the amendment of the prohibition law for individual stalls for sows in South Korea. Therefore, this experiment was performed to compare the effects of individual stalls (IS) and group housing systems (GS) on the productivity of sows to investigate the feasibility of replacing individual stalls with group housing systems in commercial sow units. Forty primiparous sows (Landrace × Yorkshire; 210.67 ± 2.22 kg average initial body weight) were randomly assigned to four

BACKGROUND: The Ending Homelessness in New Zealand: Housing First research programme is evaluating outcomes for people housed in a Housing First programme run by The People's Project in Hamilton, New Zealand. This baseline results paper uses administrative data to look at the scope and duration of their interactions with government services.
METHODS: We linked our de-identified cohort to the Integrated Data Infrastructure (IDI). This database contains administrative data on most services provided by the New Zealand Government to citizens. Linkage rates in all datasets were above 90%. This pap

BACKGROUND: Overdose is a large concern in permanent supportive housing (PSH), yet has been sparsely addressed in research or practice. We previously developed a technical assistance intervention to empower PSH buildings to implement evidence-based overdose prevention practices. We now describe delivery of and participation in this novel intervention.
METHODS: Intervention delivery occurred over four six-month periods from November 2023-January 2026. The six-month intervention included a written implementation Toolkit, individually-tailored practice facilitation sessions, and monthly learning

BACKGROUND: Unhoused people have longer hospital lengths of stays than housed. This study examined if unhoused people have less timely injury care than housed.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of adult injury encounters from January 2015 - December 2022 at the only level 1 trauma center in an urban county. We merged the trauma registry with a county-wide integrated dataset to reliably identify our primary exposure: housing status in the fiscal year of injury. The primary outcome was time to the operating room in hours. Secondary outcomes were emergency department (ED) length

In Canada, there are vast differences between the state of accommodation/housing, health, social inequalities, education and economic conditions for people in the northern and southern regions of the country. Overcrowding in Inuit Nunangat is a direct result of the promises made by past government policy that led to Inuit people settling in sedentary communities in the North on the understanding that they would be provided with social welfare. However, these welfare programmes proved to be either insufficient or non-existent for Inuit people. Therefore, Inuit are living in overcrowded homes in
