Housing Instability And Acute Care Use Among Veterans Approved For A VA Home Loan And Those Who Were Denied.

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) home loan program supports veterans in achieving home ownership. This study estimated the causal effects of this program on housing instability and acute care use. A target trial emulation framework was applied to compare propensity score-matched veterans (28,681 per group) approved for or denied VA home loans in fiscal years 2022-24. Survival analyses were performed using data from the Veterans Benefits Administration and the Veterans Health Administration. Veterans approved for VA home loans were less likely to experience housing instability or to use

Instability in Housing and Medical Care Access: The Inequitable Impacts of the COVID-19 Pandemic on U.S. Transgender Populations.

PURPOSE: To assess whether the COVID-19 pandemic has inequitably impacted key social determinants of health (SDoH), specifically employment, housing, and health care, for U.S. transgender populations. METHODS: Between April 13, 2020 and August 3, 2020, we conducted a national, cross-sectional online survey of sexual and gender minority individuals (N=870). We used logistic regression to calculate both unadjusted and adjusted odds of unemployment, homelessness/housing instability, and interruptions in medical care owing to the pandemic by gender and gender modality. Adjusted models controlled

Prevalence and correlates of methamphetamine use in transitional age youth experiencing homelessness or housing instability in San Francisco, CA.

INTRODUCTION: Substance use, including methamphetamine use, is a contributing factor in HIV acquisition and treatment. Stimulant use is linked to mental health yet there is limited data from youth in community-based settings. DESIGN: One hundred marginally housed or homeless transitional age youth (TAY) were recruited at Larkin Street Youth Services and completed a survey on mental health and substance use. METHODS: We conducted secondary data analysis using multivariable logistic regression models to identify the correlates of methamphetamine use among TAY. RESULTS: The participants' mean

A unique model for treating chronic hepatitis C in patients with psychiatric disorders, substance abuse, and/or housing instability.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with psychiatric disease, substance abuse, and/or housing instability have a high prevalence of chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. However, such individuals are often excluded from treatment for HCV infection because of a perceived inability to adhere to the rigorous medication regimen required. METHODS: A pilot program using a multidisciplinary group medical visit model to treat HCV infection in the aforementioned population was created. Medication adherence and virologic response rates were prospectively followed. RESULTS: Approximately 80% of patients were

Convalescent care in the context of homelessness and housing instability: The importance of fostering predictably safe and secure recuperative environments.

Medical respite is a form of residential convalescent care providing aftercare services to individuals experiencing unsheltered homelessness and housing instability. Little research examines how residential convalescent care affects people following acute-care hospitalization. This study of an urban medical respite program used qualitative interviews with ten respite facility clients as its primary source of data. Additional descriptive information was obtained through a quantitative examination of client data (N = 103). Findings suggest that before hospitalization, patients utilizing respite

Housing Instability, Structural Vulnerability, and Non-Fatal Opioid Overdoses Among People Who Use Heroin in Washington Heights, New York City.

Nationally, opioid overdose remains strikingly persistent among people experiencing homelessness and housing instability. Limited information is available about the characteristics of this phenomenon in economically disadvantaged communities of color. This study sought to evaluate the association between key contextual factors and experiencing a non-fatal opioid overdose among people who use heroin in Washington Heights, New York City. We conducted a cross-sectional survey (N = 101) among participants seeking harm reduction services who reported heroin use in the last three months. Binary logi

The Confluence of Housing Instability and Psychosocial, Mental, and Physical Health in Sexual Minority Young Adults: The P18 Cohort Study.

Sexual and gender minority (SGM) youth experience housing instability, including homelessness, at higher rates than heterosexuals. Few studies have examined differences within SGM populations and intersections of housing and health. Data were drawn from a study of SGM young adults who were assigned male at birth. Nearly one-quarter of the sample reported homelessness, unstable housing, or both in the six months prior to assessment. Housing instability was higher among those of lower income and educational attainment. Additionally, those who experienced any housing instability reported higher l

Does state eviction protection policy buffer the effect of housing instability on foster care entry? Evidence from IPV-exposed families.

BACKGROUND: Children exposed to intimate partner violence (IPV) face an elevated risk of foster care placement, yet the structural conditions shaping this pathway remain insufficiently understood. OBJECTIVE: This study examines whether caregiver housing instability increases the likelihood of foster care entry among IPV-exposed children and whether state-level eviction protection policies in the United States moderate this association. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: The sample comprised 53,159 children with documented IPV exposure across 17 jurisdictions, drawn from linked administrative data fro

Risk factors for homelessness and housing instability in the first episode of mental illness: Initial findings from the AMONT study.

AIM: People living with mental illness are more likely than the general population to experience adverse housing outcomes, including homelessness. The aim of the current study is to examine residential status when participants have their first contact with mental health services, and the correlates of residential status at that moment. METHODS: First-time mental health service users were recruited from seven clinical sites across Québec. Data on residential status at entry in the project, as well as demographic, clinical and social variables, were collected using self-report and interviewer-r

History of Alcohol Use Disorder and Housing Instability as Predictors of Fatigue and Mental Health Problems During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Mental health and alcohol problems are significant public health concerns amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Housing instability and symptoms of fatigue are understudied aspects of the pandemic. This study examined history of Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD), history of COVID-19 infection, and housing instability as correlates of fatigue, anxiety, and depression symptoms. Data were drawn from 250 adults enrolled in an online survey within the NIAAA COVID-19 Pandemic Impact on Alcohol Study in between April 6 and June 2 of 2022. Participants completed self-report measures of housing stability, fatigue, and

The Association of Residential Instability and Hospitalizations among Homeless and Vulnerably Housed Individuals: Results from a Prospective Cohort Study.

The present study examined the association of residential instability with hospitalizations among homeless and vulnerably housed individuals over a 4-year time period. Survey data were linked to administrative records on hospitalizations. Specifically, we used data from the Health and Housing in Transition study, a prospective cohort study that tracked the health and housing status of homeless and vulnerably housed individuals in Canada. Responses from Vancouver-based participants (n = 378) from baseline and 3 follow-ups were linked to their administrative health records on hospitalizations (D

Correlates of six-month housing instability among U.S. adults by veteran status: Exploratory study using data from the All of Us Program.

Housing instability (HI) is a social determinant of health affecting adults in the United States (U.S.). Addressing HI among veterans is a national priority, and greater understanding of differences in HI between veteran and non-veteran populations would inform homeless services and research. We examined six-month prevalence and risk/protective factors associated with self-reported HI among veterans and non-veteran U.S. adults. Cross-sectional data from the All of Us Research Program (AoU) on 254,079 (24,545 veterans and 229,534 non-veterans) survey respondents were analyzed. Logistic regressi

Pathways and trajectories linking housing instability and poor health among low-income women experiencing intimate partner violence (IPV): Toward a conceptual framework.

We used grounded theory to understand pathways and trajectories to housing instability (HI) and poor health among low-income women with experiences of intimate partner violence (IPV). We conducted in-depth interviews during 2010-11 with forty-one women (ages 18-45 years) living in Ontario, Canada. All women reported depressive symptoms in combination with other health problems. In addition to the direct pathway of IPV to poor health, thematic analysis revealed an indirect multi-tiered pathway with complex trajectories among IPV, HI, and poor health. These trajectories included material HI (hom

Housing instability is as strong a predictor of poor health outcomes as level of danger in an abusive relationship: findings from the SHARE Study.

Advocates, clinicians, policy makers, and survivors frequently cite intimate partner violence (IPV) as an immediate cause of or precursor to housing problems. Research has indicated an association between homelessness and IPV, yet few studies examine IPV and housing instability. Housing instability differs from homelessness, in that someone experiencing housing instability may currently have a place to live but faces difficulties with maintaining the residence. We present baseline findings from a longitudinal cohort study of 278 female IPV survivors with housing as a primary concern. Our analy

Housing instability and economic insecurity across the continuum of active substance use, treatment, and recovery among women involved in the criminal legal system.

BACKGROUND: Prior research on the widespread housing instability, such as homelessness, and economic insecurity, such as difficulties gaining employment, faced by women with a history of opioid use disorder (OUD) highlights the need to explore the impact of these hardships on experiences of active addiction, medications for OUD (MOUD) treatment uptake, and recovery outcomes. OBJECTIVES: This study examines how the compounding and interactive effects of housing instability and economic insecurity impact the experiences of women involved in the criminal legal system (CLS) across the continuum o

Housing Instability, Depression, and HIV Viral Load Among Young Black Gay, Bisexual, and Other Men Who Have Sex With Men in Atlanta, Georgia.

Housing instability is common among sexual minority youth. Research suggests that psychological distress, such as depression, may mediate the association between housing instability and poor HIV-related outcomes, but this hypothesis remains underexplored. Housing instability was assessed using two variables (residential moves in 6 months, and self-reported homelessness at any time since age 15 years). We examined cross-sectional relationships between the housing instability variables and detectable HIV-1 viral load (VL) in a sample of young Black gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with
