OBJECTIVE: This study compares the effect of Housing First on older (≥50 years old) and younger (18-49 years old) homeless adults with mental illness participating in At Home/Chez Soi, a 24-month multisite randomized controlled trial of Housing First.
METHOD: At Home/Chez Soi, participants (n = 2148) were randomized to receive rent supplements with intensive case management or assertive community treatment, based on their need level for mental health services, or usual care in their respective communities. A subgroup analysis compared older (n = 470) and younger (n = 1678) homeless participan

Experiences of homelessness and intimate partner violence (IPV) frequently intersect for women, yet evidence-based interventions that address both issues simultaneously remain limited. This study (a) systematically reviewed and meta-synthesized qualitative research exploring women's experiences with housing interventions for survivors of IPV and (b) integrated findings with a recent systematic review of quantitative evaluations. We conducted a comprehensive search of 15 electronic databases, grey literature, and reference lists up to May 31, 2024. Eligible studies included English-language qua

Family homelessness has become a growing public health problem over the last 3 decades. Despite this trend, few studies have explored the effectiveness of housing interventions and housing and service interventions. The purpose of this systematic review is to appraise and synthesize evidence on effective interventions addressing family homelessness. We searched 10 major electronic databases from 2007 to 2013. Empirical studies investigating effectiveness of housing interventions and housing and service interventions for American homeless families regardless of publication status were eligible

The life expectancy gap between Black and White Americans has narrowed, but progress remains slow due to the persistent consequences of lifetime exposure to structural and interpersonal experiences of racism and discrimination in various settings, for example, disadvantaged housing, neighborhood, and economic conditions. It is important to understand challenges and facilitators to healthy aging among Black Americans, i.e., maintaining functional ability and well-being in older age. We explore the intersection of housing, neighborhoods, and healthy aging among Black adults who live in two predo

The US is facing a severe affordable rental housing crisis that contributes to multiple forms of housing insecurity including homelessness, crowded and poor quality housing conditions, unstable housing arrangements, and cost burdens. A considerable body of evidence finds that housing insecurity is an important determinant of health. However, the existing literature may fall short of conceptualizing and measuring the full impact of housing insecurity on population health and on racial health equity. In this paper, we seek to expand the conceptualization of housing as a determinant of population

BACKGROUND: Insecticide thermal fogging (ITF) is a tool to control vector borne diseases. Insecticide application success for vector control has been associated with housing materials and architecture. Vector abundance is correlated with weather changes. Nevertheless, housing quality and weather impacts on vector abundance have been unaccounted for in most New World insecticide control trials for leishmaniasis vectors.
METHODS: We conducted a 15 month insecticide control trial that included two deltamethrin [6 mg a.i.m-2] based ITF interventions in 12 of 24 monitored houses at Trinidad de Las

The growing social problem of homelessness and precarious housing situations has negative effects on psychological outcomes and quality of life (QoL) for mentally ill people. Despite a large body of research on QoL among homeless mentally ill people, research on housing satisfaction as a specific QoL domain and important outcome variable for treatment interventions is scarce. The purpose of this cross-sectional study is to investigate housing satisfaction among psychiatric patients in various housing situations. Out of 1,251 patients that were treated in the targeted facilities during the admi

This paper introduces the special issue focused on the relationship between residence and health in Australia. We present six papers conducted in different Australian states that demonstrate different elements of the complex impact of residential context on health. Through this series of papers, we demonstrate the impact of housing quality and safety on vulnerable populations, but also the way in which processes around housing (e.g., data collection, renewal, allocation) can have either negative or positive outcomes. The broader residential context (i.e., neighborhood, community, geographic lo

BACKGROUND: Homelessness continues to grow globally. The Housing First (HF) model offers immediate access to housing and support services without preconditions and has a growing body of evidence documenting its effectiveness at ending homelessness. HF has a robust theory of change that hypothesizes how unique program components (i.e., immediate access to housing, separation of services from housing, client choice, etc.) drive positive social and health changes over time. We advance the understanding of how HF causes client improvement by empirically testing this program's theory of change.

BACKGROUND: Intimate partner violence (IPV) is the leading cause of women's homelessness. However, what works best to respond to the needs of women experiencing IPV and homelessness remains unclear. We aimed to systematically review the effects of housing interventions on the physical, psychosocial, and economic wellbeing of women experiencing IPV.
METHODS: In this systematic review, we searched 15 electronic databases and conducted an extensive grey literature and hand reference search between Jan 29, 2020, and May 31, 2021. We included controlled quantitative studies of housing intervention

AIMS AND CONTEXT: This paper reports the evaluation of the Doorway program (2015-18) in Melbourne, Australia. Doorway extends the original Housing First (HF) model in providing housing support to people with precarious housing at-risk of homelessness with Serious and Persistent Mental Illnesses (SPMIs) receiving care within Victoria's public mental health system. Doorway participants source and choose properties through the open rental market, and receive rental subsidies, assistance, advocacy and brokerage support through their Housing and Recovery Worker (HRW). The aim of this study is to es

Housing is a key social determinant of health that contributes to the well-documented relationship between socioeconomic status and health. This study explored how individuals with histories of unstable and precarious housing perceive their housing or shelter situations, and the impact of these settings on their health and well-being. Participants were recruited from the Health and Housing in Transition study (HHiT), a longitudinal, multi-city study that tracked the health and housing status of people with unstable housing histories over a 5-year period. For the current study, one-time semi-st

The aim of this pilot study was to evaluate the link between housing and children´s respiratory symptoms, through the construction of an index (HSHI) based on the definition of healthy-sustainable housing criteria, in a semi-urban community from Morelos, Mexico. A general and household questionnaire, and respiratory symptoms diary were applied in 60 households to gather information about schoolchildren, respiratory health, housing and lifestyle characteristics. HSHI was constructed using principal component analysis. The association between HSHI and the presence and duration of respiratory sym

Household food insecurity is a pervasive problem in North America with serious health consequences. While affordable housing has been cited as a potential policy approach to improve food insecurity, the relationship between conventional notions of housing affordability and household food security is not well understood. Furthermore, the influence of housing subsidies, a key policy intervention aimed at improving housing affordability in Western countries, on food insecurity is unclear. We undertook a cross-sectional survey of 473 families in market rental (n = 222) and subsidized (n = 251) hou

In zebrafish housing systems with water recirculation, a daily renewal of at least 10% of the total water volume is generally recommended to preserve optimal water quality. Such aquatic housing systems often rely on reverse osmosis (RO) water. RO production uses large amounts of running water, a high proportion of which is then discharged into waste. A key parameter for water quality control is nitrate, the final transformation product of the nitrogen cycle in water. Here, we used this parameter to test whether daily water renewal could be reduced in our zebrafish housing system without impact

A systematic review of the literature shows that it is possible to reduce homelessness among mentally ill homeless persons, partly by offering access to housing and partly by providing intensive care through Assertive Community Treatment. Assertive Community Treatment can, to some extent, decrease psychiatric symptoms and increase quality of life. It is evident that by offering housing, homelessness may be reduced, but the comparison of independent housing and group living did not reveal big differences.

INTRODUCTION: 50% of permanent supportive housing (PSH) residents in the U.S. smoke cigarettes, and tobacco-related mortality is their number one cause of death. Over 30% of PSH residents have post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and many perceive their built environment (e.g., housing) as inadequate for mental and physical health recovery. It is unknown whether built environment factors moderate the relationship between PTSD and tobacco use among PSH residents.
METHODS: We used baseline data from 400 participants in a smoke-free home intervention in PSH sites in the San Francisco Bay Area

OBJECTIVES: To assess the association between air pollution exposure and housing context during pregnancy and adverse birth outcomes.
METHODS: We linked air pollution data from the Environmental Protection Agency and housing data from the American Community Survey with birth records from Wisconsin counties over a 9-year period. We calculated average daily pregnancy exposure to fine particulate matter and ozone and modeled its relationship to preterm birth, low birthweight and NICU admission, adjusting for individual characteristics and housing context.
RESULTS: Ozone exposure and housing cos

OBJECTIVES: To identify the availability and describe measurement methods of housing conditions in ageing cohort studies across Oceania, and to highlight data and measurement gaps.
METHODS: For this meta-research study, ageing cohort studies in Oceania were identified using an online cohort repository, which includes ageing cohort studies across the globe (search finalized January 2022), along with an updated PubMed search (to October 2024). Availability and measurement methods for sixteen subdomains of housing conditions were considered across four main domains of internal housing conditions

Housing costs account for a significant proportion of low-income households' budgets, limiting the amount of money left for food purchases. We aimed to assess 1) the association of area- and household-level housing costs with household-level food purchasing characteristics and 2) explore the moderating effect of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) participation and SNAP purchasing power in these associations. Household-level data come from the National Household Food Acquisition and Purchase Survey (FoodAPS; n = 3707 households), including the outcomes analyzed: spending per 500 k
