Approximately 15 types of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection cause virtually all cases of cervical cancer. Human papillomavirus 16 is the major type, accounting for approximately 50% of cases. The major steps of cervical carcinogenesis include HPV infection, viral persistence and progression to precancer (as opposed to viral clearance), and invasion. Human papillomavirus is the most common sexually transmitted infection. However, most HPV infections become undetectable by even sensitive HPV DNA testing within 1 to 2 years. The prevalence of infection peaks at young ages and declines thereaft

Cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer in women in the world. To eliminate cervical cancer by 2030, the World Health Organization has given the target of 70 per cent coverage of twice lifetime screening. A multitude of screening methods are available, including cytology, human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA testing and visual inspection tests. Precision tests, including molecular and protein biomarkers such as DNA methylation, p16 immunostaining, and HPV mRNA testing help to enhance specificity of the screening. Worldwide HPV DNA testing with or without cytology is used as a screening meth

OBJECTIVE: Management of equivocal Papanicolaou smear result remains to be challenging even with the aid of human papillomavirus test. Recently, 3 novel methylation-silenced genes, PAX1, WT1, and PCDH10, have been found to be specifically associated with cervical cancer. We compared the performances of methylation test of these genes with human papillomavirus tests in triage of equivocal Papanicolaou smear result.
STUDY DESIGN: Two hundred twenty-two women with Papanicolaou smear results of atypical cells of undetermined significance nested to a multicenter, nation-wide cohort (the T1899 coho

Determining the origin of uterine adenocarcinomas can be difficult in biopsy and curettage specimens because the morphologic spectrum of endocervical and endometrial adenocarcinomas overlaps. In addition, in hysterectomy specimens the primary site is often equivocal for tumors that involve predominantly the lower uterine segment and endocervix and lack identifiable precursor lesions. We assessed the value of immunohistochemistry for estrogen and progesterone receptors and in situ hybridization for human papillomavirus DNA detection in making this clinically relevant distinction. We evaluated a

We investigated the possibility that human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA could be present on objects that are used for the management of patients with genital HPV infections. Human papillomavirus DNA was identified by filter hybridization in swabs taken from eight of 16 (50%) of surgical gloves. Similarly, HPV DNA was found in 23 of 62 (37%) and one of 62 (1.6%) of biopsy forceps before and after sterilization in 30% tincture of Savlon for 30 minutes, respectively. Five of 22 (23%) and one of 22 (4.5%) of cryoprobe tips tested positive for HPV DNA before and after cleaning with 90% ethanol solution

The careHPV and HC2 assays were compared for high-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) DNA detection in cervical samples from 149 HIV-1-infected African women. The HR-HPV DNA detection rates were 37.6% and 34.9% for careHPV and HC2, respectively. Agreement between the two tests was 94.6% (95% confidence interval [CI], 89.7% to 97.7%) with a kappa value of 0.88 (95% CI, 0.81 to 0.96), indicating an excellent agreement. careHPV may be considered as suitable as HC2 for cervical cancer screening among HIV-infected African women.

At present, cytological examination of cervical smears is the method used to screen the female population for cervical abnormalities. This employs the Papanicolaou staining technique and cell morphology to detect abnormal cells from the susceptible transformation zone of the cervix. However, with the recent discovery of a possible link between human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and cervical cancer, a test to determine the presence of HPV infection may be appropriate. Tests are still at a developmental stage and at present used only for research purposes. Various DNA-DNA or DNA-RNA hybridisat

INTRODUCTION: Cervical cancer, a malignancy caused by infection with oncogenic human papillomavirus, disproportionally affects women from low resource settings. Persistence of human papillomavirus infection may mediate an association between tobacco use and cervical cancer. In limited resource settings, women from indigenous communities are often marginalized and do not benefit from evidence-based interventions to prevent tobacco use or cervical cancer due to the limited reach of mainstream healthcare services to these communities. This study determined the association between smoking and high

Carbon dioxide laser energy is absorbed by intracellular water but not by proteins or nucleic acids. The possibility of dispersing viral DNA during laser therapy of human papillomavirus (HPV)-containing genital infections was explored using a filter hybridization technique. Samples were taken using dacron swabs from 110 patients in nine separate treatment sessions as well as from five pre-filter canisters, four fume vacuum tubes, and from the nasopharynx, eyelids, and ears of the laser surgeon before and after laser surgery. The viral RNA probes were specific for groups of HPV types 6/11, 16/1

Viral etiology of nasal polyps was postulated as many as 40 years ago, but so far, no study has shown an association or causal relation between any specific virus and nasal polyps. By using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique, nasal polyps from both 10 patients with intolerance to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID intolerance) (e.g., Aspirin) and from 10 patients with no history of NSAID intolerance were studied for the presence of papillomavirus DNA. Nasal mucosa from 10 patients who had undergone surgery for septoplasty served as controls. The PCR test used covers approxi

Integration of human papillomavirus DNAs into the host genome is crucial to the development of cervical cancer. Overexpression of the P16 protein has been reported in cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) as well as cervical cancer. Such molecular biomarkers have been utilized for ancillary testing of liquid-based cytology specimens; however, their clinical application remains controversial. To detect CIN 2 or more advanced lesions, 153 liquid-based cytology (LBC) specimens were investigated to determine the physical status of the human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA by in situ hybridization (ISH
