Human bocavirus (HBoV) is a parvovirus with a possible aetiological role in respiratory disease that is currently under investigation. We detected HBoV1 in children and adults hospitalized with acute disease of the lower respiratory tract. HBoV genome was detected by PCR in nasopharyngeal swabs collected from 75 patients aged 0-89 years during 2010. HBoV was found in 17/75 (22.7 %) patients, 64.7 % of them infants younger than 1 year old and 29.4 % adults older than 30 years [the bimodal age distribution among HBoV-positive (HBoV(+)) patients was statistically significant, P<0.001]. Of all HBo

Human bocavirus 1 (HBoV1), first identified in human nasopharyngeal specimens in 2005, is a relatively recent member of the respiratory virus family and is primarily associated with respiratory tract infections. Despite this, the mechanisms underlying HBoV1 pathogenesis remain poorly understood, primarily due to the lack of suitable cell lines and animal models, as well as the complicating factor of co-infections with other pathogens. In this study, we demonstrate that the non-structural protein 1 (NP1) of HBoV1 antagonizes the type I interferon (IFN-I) signaling pathway. NP1 interacts with th

BACKGROUND: The objective of this prospective study was to assess the proportion and clinical consequences of human bocavirus 1 (HBoV1) replication in children hospitalized for acute bronchiolitis (AB) with HBoV1 DNA in the nasopharynx (NP).
METHODS: For this purpose, we detected HBoV1 DNA and mRNA (evidence of viral replication and viable virus) in NP in cases and healthy control children. This research allowed us to distinguish active HBoV1 infections from inactive ones.
RESULTS: HBoV1 DNA was detected in the NP of 37 of 307 patients with AB (12.1%) and 9 of 150 children in a healthy contr

To assess the impact of human bocavirus (HBoV) virus load on epidemiologic and clinical characteristics in children with lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI). Clinical records of a total of 654 patients with HBoV infection during January 2013 and December 2014 were retrospectively reviewed. Patients with high HBoV virus load infection had a similar age distribution with the total HBoV infection, which had a peak age group of 6-24 months. Patients with high virus load are significantly younger (P < 0.01) than those with low load. The patients who had wheeze and tachypnea/dyspnea at presenta

BACKGROUND: Human Bocavirus (HBoV), a new species of the genus parvovirus newly detected in 2005, seems to be a worldwide distributed pathogen among children with respiratory tract infection (prevalence 2%-18%). Recently published retrospective studies and one prospective birth cohort study suggest that HBoV-primary infection occurs in infants.
METHODS: Prospective single center study over one winter season (November 2005-May 2006) with hospitalized children without age restriction using PCR-based diagnostic methods.
RESULTS: HBoV DNA was detected in 11 (2.8%) of 389 nasopharyngeal aspirates

Human Bocavirus 1 (HBoV1) is one major pathogen that has been associated with wheezing illnesses. However, there is still a lack of effective clinical predictive indicators for wheezing illnesses in children infected with HBoV1. A retrospective cohort study was conducted among pediatric patients with single-HBoV1 infection from September 2016 to August 2023. Then, univariate logistic regression was used to screen potential predictors for wheezing illness, and Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO) regression was applied to minimize overfitting and select key predictors. Human bocavirus (HBoV) is a causative agent of respiratory and gastrointestinal diseases worldwide. Four HBoV species (HBoV1-4) have been identified so far. Although a previous report has documented the HBoV association with acute gastroenteritis (AGE) in Taiwan, their epidemiology, genetic diversity, and phylogenetic relationships remain unclear. In this study, we focused on an investigation of these unsolved issues, which will help to reveal molecular epidemiology and phylogeny of the circulating HBoV2 in Taiwan. A total of 176 stool samples were collected from children with AGE for this stu

Human bocavirus (HBoV) is a newly identified human parvovirus that associated with respiratory and gastrointestinal diseases. Epidemiological surveillance of HBoV was conducted on fecal specimens collected from hospitalized children with diarrhea in Chiang Mai, Thailand in 2011. Among a total of 222 fecal specimens tested, 17 (7.7%) were positive for HBoV by PCR. Of the 17 HBoV positive samples, double- or triple-infections together with other enteric viruses were found in 10 (58.8%) pediatric patients, while monoinfection with HBoV alone was detected in seven (41.2%) cases. Mixed infection am

Human bocavirus (HBoV) is an emerging pathogen associated with pediatric respiratory and gastrointestinal infections, yet its genetic diversity remains understudied. The aberrant global resurgence of other respiratory viruses after the COVID-19 pandemic has raised concerns regarding significant evolutionary shifts in viral genetic profiles. Accordingly, this study characterized HBoV isolates that circulated in Beijing during 2023 by analyzing 1,442 pediatric respiratory samples associated with acute respiratory tract infections. Among 43 HBoV-positive cases with a 2.98% detection rate, 11 comp

Human bocaviruses were first described between 2005 and 2010, identified in respiratory and enteric tract samples of children. Screening studies have shown worldwide distribution. Based on phylogenetic analysis, they were classified into four genotypes (HBoV1-4). From a clinical perspective, human bocavirus 1 (HBoV1) is considered the most relevant, since it can cause upper and lower acute respiratory tract infection, mainly in infants, including common cold, bronchiolitis, and pneumonia, as well as wheezing in susceptible patients. However, the specific processes leading to structural, bioche

Human bocavirus 1 (HBoV1) is a parvovirus associated with respiratory tract infections (RTIs) in children, but a causal relation has not yet been confirmed. To develop a qualitative reverse transcription PCR to detect spliced mRNA from HBoV1 and to determine whether HBoV1 mRNA correlated better with RTIs than did HBoV1 DNA, we used samples from HBoV1 DNA-positive children, with and without RTIs, to evaluate the test. A real-time reverse transcription PCR, targeting 2 alternatively spliced mRNAs, was developed. HBoV1 mRNA was detected in nasopharyngeal aspirates from 33 (25%) of 133 children wi

The diversity and evolution of the genomes of human bocavirus (HBoV), which causes respiratory diseases, have been scarcely studied. Here, we aimed to obtain and characterize HBoV genomes from patients's nasopharyngeal samples collected between 2017 and 2022 period (5 years and 7 months). Next-generation sequencing (NGS) used Illumina technology after having implemented using GEMI an in-house multiplex PCR amplification strategy. Genomes were assembled and analyzed with CLC Genomics, Mafft, BioEdit, MeV, Nextclade, MEGA, and iTol. A total of 213 genomes were obtained. Phylogeny classified them

BACKGROUND: Plastic bronchitis (PB) is an uncommon and severe acute respiratory ailment characterized by the formation of casts in the trachea or bronchial tree. Some instances have been linked to human bocavirus (HBoV) infections.
CASE PRESENTATION: In this report, we present a case of PB secondary to HBoV1 infection in a previously healthy pediatric patient. A 17-month-old male was admitted due to respiratory distress following 2 days of cough and fever. A preadmission chest X-ray revealed atelectasis of the left lung. Emergency electronic bronchoscopy and foreign body forceps were employed
