Bioactivity of Isostructural Hydrogen Bonding Frameworks Built from Pipemidic Acid Metal Complexes.

We report herein three novel complexes whose design was based on the approach that consists of combining commercially available antibiotics with metals to attain different physicochemical properties and promote antimicrobial activity. Thus, new isostructural three-dimensional (3D) hydrogen bonding frameworks of pipemidic acid with manganese (II), zinc (II) and calcium (II) have been synthesised by mechanochemistry and are stable under shelf conditions. Notably, the antimicrobial activity of the compounds is maintained or even increased; in particular, the activity of the complexes is augmented

Theoretical Studies on the Fluorescence Enhancement of Benzaldehydes by Intermolecular Hydrogen Bonding.

Density functional theory and its time-dependent extension are employed to investigate the intermolecular hydrogen-bonding- (Inter-HB-) induced fluorescence enhancement of benzaldehydes. The fluorescence quenching mechanism of benzaldehydes in chloroform is attributed to the low energy gap between the lowest ππ* and nπ* states at Franck-Condon (FC) point and conical interaction between ππ* and nπ* states. The Inter-HB between the aldehyde group of benzaldehydes and methanol can considerably increase the energy gap between ππ* and nπ* states at the FC point, and this type of hydrogen bond is st

Self-assembled squares and triangles by simultaneous hydrogen bonding and metal coordination.

Through the combination of hydrogen bonding and metal-templated self-assembly, molecular squares and molecular triangles are observed in chloroform solution upon the complexation of hydrogen-bonded dimers of para-pyridyl-substituted 2-ureido-4-[1H]-pyrimidinone (UPy) and an appropriate cis-substituted palladium complex. Molecular modeling studies and NMR analysis confirmed the presence of two distinct structures in solution: the tubular structure of the molecular square and propeller-bowl structure of the molecular triangle.

Facile Preparation of Supramolecular H-Shaped (Ter)polymers via Multiple Hydrogen Bonding.

A well-defined Hamilton wedge (HW) midchain functionalized block copolymer, i.e., polyethylene glycol-b-polystyrene (PEG-HW-PS, Mn,GPC = 5600 Da, PDI = 1.03), was successfully synthesized via a combination of atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and copper-catalyzed azide alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC). An α,ω-cyanuric acid (CA) difunctional linear homopolymer poly(n-butylacrylate) (CA-PnBA-CA, Mn,GPC = 8100 Da, PDI = 1.09) was concomitantly prepared via reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. Supramolecular H-shaped macromolecules were-for the first time-p

Isostructural crystal packing and hydrogen bonding in alkylammonium tin(IV) chloride compounds.

The three isostructural compounds butylammonium hexachloridotin(IV), pentylammonium hexachloridotin(IV) and hexylammonium hexachloridotin(IV), (C(n)H(2n+1)NH(3))(2)[SnCl(6)], with n = 4, 5 and 6, respectively, crystallize as inorganic-organic hybrids. As such, the structures consist of layers of [SnCl(6)](2-) octahedra, separated by hydrocarbon layers of interdigitated butylammonium, pentylammonium or hexylammonium cations. Corrugated layers of cations alternate with tin(IV) chloride layers. The asymmetric unit in each compound consists of an anionic component comprising one Sn and two Cl atom

Hydrogen-bonding and pi-pi interactions in 2-amino-4,6-dimethylpyrimidinium salicylate.

In the crystal structure of the title compound, C6H10N3+.C7H5O3-, the asymmetric unit contains four crystallographically independent 2-amino-4,6-dimethylpyrimidinium and salicylate ions (Z = 8). In each of these, one of the pyrimidine N atoms is protonated, and the carboxylate group of the salicylate ion interacts with the pyrimidine group through a pair of N-H...O hydrogen bonds, forming an R2(2)(8) motif. The pyrimidine cations also form base pairs via a pair of N-H...N hydrogen bonds (involving the amino group and the unprotonated ring N atom), forming another R2(2)(8) motif. Three such R2(

Iodine Gauche Effect Induced by an Intramolecular Hydrogen Bond.

The gauche conformer in 1-X,2-Y-disubstituted ethanes, that is, the staggered orientation in which X and Y are in closer contact, is only favored for relatively small substituents that do not give rise to large X···Y steric repulsion. For more diffuse substituents, weakly attractive orbital interactions between antiperiplanar bonds (i.e., hyperconjugation) cannot overrule the repulsive forces between X and Y. Our quantum chemical analyses of the rotational isomerism of XCH2CH2Y (X = F, OH; Y = I) at ZORA-BP86-D3(BJ)/QZ4P reveal that indeed the anti conformer is generally favored due to a less

Wavy supramolecular polymers formed by hydrogen-bonded rosettes.

A barbiturate-functionalized supramolecular monomer bearing an ester-linked biphenyl and azobenzene π-conjugated core affords wavy supramolecular polymers. The periodic inversion of curvature is due to the conformational rigidity of the monomer and repulsive interactions between rosettes. Photoisomerization of the azobenzene moiety increases the fragility of the main chain without deteriorating its periodic structure.

A network of weak hydrogen bonds in the crystal structure of Tetrazepam.

The crystal structure of tetrazepam, a benzodiazepine derivative formerly used for its muscle relaxant properties, has been solved and found to be monoclinic, space group P21/c, with lattice parameters a=12.7386(7)Å, b=11.3774(7)Å, c=10.3084(7)Å, β=103.175(5) and Vunit-cell=1454.69(16) Å3 at room temperature (293K) with Z=4 molecules in the unit-cell. A network of weak hydrogen bonds involving aliphatic hydrogen atoms plays an important role in the formation of this structure.

Effects of Halogen and Hydrogen Bonding on the Electronics of a Conjugated Rotor.

The electronic properties of a pyrazine-containing arylene ethynylene unit are influenced by hydrogen bond and halogen bond donors that are held in proximity of the pyrazine rotor. These interactions are evident with iodine- and bromine-centered halogen bonds and O-H- and C-H-based hydrogen bonds. Bathochromic shifts of UV-vis and fluorescence signals are the best indicators of this intramolecular attraction. The effects can be attenuated in solvents that are less favorable for intramolecular halogen or hydrogen bonding, such as 2-propanol, and amplified in solvents that are supportive, such a

Dynamic Ordering and Phase Segregation in Hydrogen-Bonded Polymers.

Hydrogen bonds (H-bonds) constitute highly relevant structural units of molecular self-assembly. They bridge biological and synthetic sciences, implementing dynamic properties into materials and molecules, not achieved via purely covalent bonds. Phase segregation on the other hand represents another important assembly principle, responsible for, e.g., cell compartimentation, membrane-formation, and microphase segregation in polymers. Yet, despite the expanding elegant synthetic strategies of supramolecular polymers, the investigation of phase behavior of macromolecules driven by H-bonding forc

Collective contributions to the dielectric relaxation of hydrogen-bonded liquids.

Dielectric relaxation times are often interpreted in terms of the reorientation of dipolar species or aggregates. The relevant time correlation function contains, however, cross terms between dipole moments of different particles. In the static case, these cross terms are accounted for by the Kirkwood factor g(K). Theories and molecular dynamics simulations suggest that such cross correlations may also affect the time-dependent properties, as reflected in the dielectric spectra. We present an experimental method for detecting effects of such cross correlations in dielectric spectra by a compar

Formation of a hydrogen-bonded receptor assembly in niosomal membranes.

The formation of a hydrogen-bonded receptor in niosomal membranes is reported in this communication. The niosomes prepared from non-ionic surfactants C12EO3 and C14EO3 provide a stable system that allows the self-assembly of hydrogen-bonded receptors to occur in contact with aqueous environments. We demonstrate here by CD, TEM and Confocal Microscopy that the incorporation of the building blocks, calix[4]dimelamine 1 and PerBAR, within the niosomal membranes led to the formation of well-defined hydrogen-bonded assembly 13.(PerBAR)6 within these membranes.

Nonconventional hydrogen and halogen bonds in the binary complexes of haloform with hydrogen cyanide and methylidynephosphane derivatives.

This study presents a comprehensive analysis of the nature and stability of the nonconventional hydrogen bonds in the complexes formed between haloforms (CHX3, X = F, Cl, and Br) and hydrogen cyanide (HCN) or methylidynephosphane (HCP) derivatives, denoted as MCZ (M = H, F, Cl, Br, CH3, C2H, CN, CP, CAs, Li, and Na and Z = N and P), with particular emphasis on the rarely investigated C-H⋯P and C-H⋯C hydrogen bonds. The more stable MCN complexes are governed by C-H⋯N hydrogen bonds, while the MCP systems show C-H⋯C/P/Cl hydrogen bonds and C-X⋯X/C/P halogen bonds. Complex stability increases wit

Symmetrical hydrogen bonds in iridium(III) alkoxides with relevance to outer sphere hydrogen transfer.

A chelating ligand formed by deprotonation of 2-(2'-pyridyl)-2-propanol stabilizes a distorted trigonal bipyramidal geometry in a 16e(-) d(6) 5-coordinate iridium complex with the alkoxide acting as a π donor. Ambiphilic species such as AcOH bearing both nucleophilic and electrophilic functionality form adducts with the unsaturated iridium complex which contain strong intramolecular O···H···O hydrogen bonds that involve the basic alkoxide oxygen. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations on the isolated cations reproduce with high accuracy the geometrical features obtained via X-ray diffrac

Interfacial Hydrogen-Bond Dynamics in Transition Metal Compounds.

Understanding how water behaves when confined within atomic layers of active transition-metal carbides, nitrides, and carbonitrides is essential for uncovering the fundamental principles needed to engineer solid-liquid interfaces at the atomic scale. Yet, how lattice element chemistry and surface termination groups collectively regulate the structure and mobility of such interlayer water remains poorly understood. Here, we present a composition-controlled investigation of interlayer water dynamics in layered transition-metal nitride, carbide, and carbonitride systems using a systematic integra

Hydrogen Bonds under Electric Fields with Quantum Accuracy.

Hydrogen bonds (H-bonds) are pivotal in various chemical and biological systems and exhibit complex behavior under external perturbations. This study investigates the structural, vibrational, and energetic properties of prototypical H-bonded dimers, water (H2O)2, hydrogen fluoride (HF)2, hydrogen sulfide (H2S)2, and ammonia (NH3)2 - and the respective monomers under static and homogeneous electric fields (EFs) using the accurate explicitly correlated singles and doubles coupled cluster method (CCSD) for equilibrium geometries and harmonic vibrational frequencies and the perturbative triples CC

Self-Replication Without Hydrogen-Bonds: An Exobiotic Design.

Life on Earth uses DNA as the central template for self-replication, genetic encoding, and information transfer. However, there are no physical laws precluding life's existence elsewhere in space, and alternative life forms may not need DNA. In the search for exobiology, knowing what to look for as a biosignature remains a challenge - especially if it is not from the obvious list of biologic building blocks. Clues from chemicals recently discovered on Mars and in the Taurus Molecular Cloud 1 (TMC-1), show that intriguing organic compounds exist beyond Earth, which could provide a starting poin

Hydrogen Bond Patterns of Dipyridone and Bis(Hydroxypyridinium) Cations.

Dipyridonyl-substituted derivatives 2-4 of benzene, pyridine, and pyrazine, respectively, were synthesized to examine the ability of 2-pyridone and its protonated species to direct the self-assembly by hydrogen bonding. Structural analysis by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) of 2 and 4 in trifluoroacetic acid demonstrated that salts are formed as a result of the transfer of protons from the acid to the base (organic species) to generate a bis(hydroxypyridinium) dication. However, if no proton transfer takes place like in the case of crystals of 3 grown from DMSO/H2O, the self-assembly

High-temperature superconductivity using a model of hydrogen bonds.

Recently, there has been much interest in high-temperature superconductors and more recently in hydrogen-based superconductors. This work offers a simple model that explains the behavior of the superconducting gap based on naive BCS (Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer) theory and reproduces most effects seen in experiments, including the isotope effect and [Formula: see text] enhancement as a function of pressure. We show that this is due to a combination of the factors appearing in the gap equation: the matrix element between the proton states and the level splitting of the proton.
