Styloid and hyoid bone proximity is a risk factor for cervical carotid artery dissection.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Carotid artery dissection (CAD) is more common with increased styloid process length. Our goal was to determine whether proximity of the styloid process and the hyoid bone to the internal carotid artery (ICA) was a risk factor for CAD. METHODS: We studied axial slices on computed tomography angiograms of 88 patients with nonaneurysmal CAD, from 88 age- and sex-matched controls without dissection, and from 32 nonage-/sex-matched nonaneurysmal vertebral artery dissection control patients. We measured the nearest distance between the ICA and both the styloid and the hyoid

Laryngotracheal reconstruction with a muscle-pedicle hyoid bone flap: a series of 23 patients.

We conducted a study to evaluate the effectiveness of muscle-pedicle hyoid bone flaps in the repair and reconstruction of the larynx and trachea in 23 patients who had undergone extended partial laryngectomy. Of this group, 17 patients had undergone surgery to correct laryngotracheal stenosis and 6 to remove laryngeal carcinoma. Intervention resulted in successful decannulation in 20 of the 23 patients (87.0%). Of the 3 patients who did not experience a successful outcome initially, 2 were successfully decannulated following a second intervention; the other patient required a total laryngectom

The Hyoid Bone in Robin Sequence: Morphology and Position in the Context of Mandibular Distraction Osteogenesis.

BACKGROUND: Robin Sequence (RS) is a congenital condition marked by micrognathia, glossoptosis, and airway obstruction. Patients with RS exhibit anatomical differences in the hyoid bone, a key mediator of swallowing and respiration. Severe RS is treated with mandibular distraction osteogenesis (MDO) to lengthen the mandible and increase oropharyngeal space, the latter thought to be caused by changes in hyoid position. Here, we test this hypothesis by quantitatively evaluating 3D hyoid position and morphology in patients with RS and comparing them to pediatric controls. METHODS: Computed tomog

Parosteal Lipoma Overlying an Osteochondroma of the Hyoid Bone: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Parosteal lipomas and osteochondromas of the head and neck are uncommon benign tumors, constituting a small fraction of lipoma and bone tumor cases. We present a unique case of a 66-year-old male with a parosteal lipoma overlying an osteochondroma in the anterior midline neck, causing dysphagia. Surgical excision confirmed the diagnosis, and a literature review revealed similar cases predominantly adjacent to the mandible or calvaria. This case emphasizes the need to have parosteal lipoma and osteochondroma on the differential diagnosis for patients presenting with a firm mass of the central n

Chondrosarcoma of the hyoid bone - Report of a case and a literature review of the suitable treatment strategy.

Chondrosarcoma is a rare malignant tumor occurring in the trunk and long bones. We present an extremely rare case of chondrosarcoma of the hyoid bone with clinical and pathological correlation and a literature review. We searched all cases of the hyoid chondrosarcoma in PubMed (MEDLINE) between 1990 and 2015. Eighteen cases were analyzed, including the present case. Most of them were low grade type. In 12 cases where intraoperative findings were recorded, no adhesion to the surrounding tissue was observed. Chondrosarcoma of the hyoid bone is usually low grade type, and there may be no invasion

Recurrent syncope caused by compression of internal carotid artery by an anomalous hyoid bone.

In rare cases a syncope can be caused by compression or irritation of the carotid artery and the carotid sinus due to congenital anatomical anomalies of cervical structures like the hyoid bone. We present the case a of 36 year old man with recurrent syncopes when turning his head. Clinical investigations revealed a hyoid bone anomaly with elongated lesser cornua, especially on the right symptomatic side. Surgical resection of the right lesser cornu led to complete resolution of symptoms over a two year follow-up. Syncope especially in younger subjects may be caused by congenital anomalies of t

Microscopic evidence of previous trauma to the hyoid bone in a homicide involving pressure to the neck.

Post-mortem examination of a female homicide victim suggested a fracture of the larynx and increased flexibility, without associated hemorrhage, of the hyoid bone. There was a history of domestic violence, which included an allegation of attempted strangulation. Microscopy confirmed a recent fracture of the larynx and showed evidence of a healing fracture in the hyoid bone. Death was due to multiple blunt force trauma, including pressure to the neck. The deceased's partner admitted strangulation and was convicted of murder. The discussion concentrates on causation of laryngo-hyoid fractures an

Fracture of the hyoid bone associated with atlantoaxial subluxation: a case report and review of the literature.

Hyoid bone fractures secondary to blunt trauma other than strangulation are rare. Only 27 cases have been reported in the literature. They have few, if any, complications, such as dysphagia, hypoxia, cardiorespiratory collapse, laceration of the pharynx, mandibular fracture, thyroid cartilage fracture, and facial fracture. No report of hyoid bone fracture associated with spinal column injury was reported in the English literature. The authors reported a 46-year-old male patient who complained of neck pain and odynophagia after a traffic accident. After systemic examination and cervical CT scan

Tracking Hyoid Bone Displacement During Swallowing Without Videofluoroscopy Using Machine Learning of Vibratory Signals.

Identifying physiological impairments of swallowing is essential for determining accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment for patients with dysphagia. The hyoid bone is an anatomical landmark commonly monitored during analysis of videofluoroscopic swallow studies (VFSSs). Its displacement is predictive of penetration/aspiration and is associated with other swallow kinematic events. However, VFSSs are not always readily available/feasible and expose patients to radiation. High-resolution cervical auscultation (HRCA), which uses acoustic and vibratory signals from a microphone and tri-axial

Peripharyngeal tissue deformation, stress distributions, and hyoid bone movement in response to mandibular advancement.

Mandibular advancement (MA) increases upper airway (UA) patency and decreases collapsibility. Furthermore, MA displaces the hyoid bone in a cranial-anterior direction, which may contribute to MA-associated UA improvements via redistribution of peripharyngeal tissue stresses (extraluminal tissue pressure, ETP). In the present study, we examined effects of MA on ETP distributions, deformation of the peripharyngeal tissue surface (UA geometry), and hyoid bone position. We studied 13 supine, anesthetized, tracheostomized, spontaneously breathing adult male New Zealand White rabbits. Graded MA was
