Grip forces exerted against stationary held objects during gravity changes.

In the present study, grip forces exerted against a stationary held object were recorded during parabolic flights. Such flight maneuvers induce changes of gravity with two periods of hypergravity, associated with a doubling of normal terrestrial gravity, and a 20 s period of microgravity. Accordingly, the object's weight changed from being twice as heavy as normally experienced and weightless. Grip-force recordings demonstrated that force control was seriously disturbed only during the first experience of hyper- and microgravity, with the grip forces being exceedingly high and yielding irregul

Memory performance during G exposure as assessed by a word recognition task.

BACKGROUND: Pilots of modern fighter aircraft are exposed to substantial physiological and mental stressors. The objective of this study was to investigate how memory performance, in terms of encoding and/or retrieval processes, was affected by sustained +Gz exposure. METHOD: There were 18 healthy men ranging from experienced fighter pilots to novice riders who participated. A word continuous recognition task (CRT) was employed as a memory test. The task consisted of three consecutive phases: 1) encoding of familiar words at 1 G; 2) encoding and retrieval of words at 70% of the subject's rela

Feeling free, feeling 0-g!

Following the great success of the Student Parabolic Flight Campaigns that it organised in 1994 and 1995, ESA decided to make them an annual event for students from the Agency's Member States. An initiative of ESA's Education Office, the campaigns give talented students a unique opportunity to experience weightlessness whilst performing their own scientific experiments, and hopefully encourage them to consider pursuing a career in space. The fifth Student Parabolic Flight Campaign (SPFC) took place from Bordeaux-Merignac Airport in southwest France in the first weeks of September 2002, with mo

Gravity as a Boundary Condition for the Evolution of Three-Dimensional Multicellularity.

Life evolved under a persistent 1 g field that is continuous, ubiquitous, and directionally structured. Here, we synthesize evidence across evolutionary biology, mechanobiology, and genome architecture to propose gravity as a mechanical boundary condition that helped canalize the emergence of complex multicellularity. Order-of-magnitude considerations indicate that gravity-derived hydrostatic loads can fall within force/pressure regimes relevant to nuclear and chromatin mechanosensitivity when transmitted through adhesion-cytoskeleton-LINC-lamina coupling. Comparative genomic and imaging frame

Navigating the Management of an F-16 Pilot Following Spontaneous Splenic Rupture.

BACKGROUND: Little consensus exists on the best practices for post-acute care of patients who suffer splenic injury but retain functional splenic tissue. Moreover, no published guidance or case reports exist for managing pilots in this demographic, making the flight surgeon's task particularly difficulty as he/she attempts to apply the best available evidence for a patient population exposed to unique occupational hazards.CASE REPORT: We describe the case of an F-16 pilot who suffered a spontaneous splenic rupture due to infectious mononucleosis and required splenic artery embolization for hem

Dysrhythmias in Laypersons During Centrifuge-Simulated Suborbital Spaceflight.

INTRODUCTION: There are limited data on cardiac dysrhythmias in laypersons during hypergravity exposure. We report layperson electrocardiograph (ECG) findings and tolerance of dysrhythmias during centrifuge-simulated suborbital spaceflight. METHODS: Volunteers participated in varied-length centrifuge training programs of 2-7 centrifuge runs over 0.5-2 d, culminating in two simulated suborbital spaceflights of combined +Gz and +Gx (peak +4.0 Gz, +6.0 Gx, duration 5 s). Monitors recorded pre- and post-run mean arterial blood pressure (MAP), 6-s average heart rate (HR) collected at prespecified

Visually-induced tilt during parabolic flights.

A helmet-mounted visual display system was used to study visually induced sensations of self-motion (vection) about the roll, pitch and yaw axes under normal gravity condition (1g) and during the microgravity and hypergravity phases of parabolic flights aboard the NASA KC-135 aircraft. Under each gravity condition, the following parameters were investigated: (1) the subject's perceived body vertical with eyes closed and with eyes open gazing at a stationary random dot display; (2) the magnitude of sensations of body tilt with respect to the subjective vertical, while the subject viewed display

An electromyographic assessment of the anti-G straining maneuver.

BACKGROUND: The anti-G straining maneuver (AGSM), used by aircrew to enhance their +Gz tolerance and to reduce the potential risk of G-induced loss of consciousness, has been recognized as an effective technique. The purpose of this study was to establish an objective tool to evaluate the effectiveness of an aircrew member's AGSM. METHODS: There were 20 healthy subjects who participated in the study, including 8 senior aviation physiological trainers and 12 trainees. The former were familiar with the anti-G maneuver and had experienced high +Gz exposure, the latter had never been exposed to a

Renal artery dissection associated with Gz acceleration.

A 55-yr-old male presented with flank pain and nausea minutes after intensive aerobatic flight maneuvers. An initial diagnosis of acute appendicitis was made. Computed axial tomography and renal arteriography showed a right kidney with two renal arteries, a right upper pole infarction, and a dissection in the upper renal artery which had a more vertical trajectory than the usual main renal artery. No signs of diseases known to be associated with renal artery dissection were present. The patient recovered without residual hypertension. Heavy positive G loads may have potential to cause renal ar

The behavioral reactions of a snake and a turtle to abrupt decreases in gravity.

We report here on the behavioral reaction of two reptiles to abrupt decreases in gravity. One striped rat snake, Elaphe quadrivirgata, and three striped-neck pond turtles, Mauremys japonica, were exposed to microgravity on parabolic flight, during the filming of a documentary for the NHK television station in Japan. The video films revealed that the snake reflexively responded to the shift from hyper- to hypogravity by taking up a defensive posture--on the first parabola, the snake struck at itself. The turtles actively extended their limbs and hyper-extended their neck in microgravity, a post

Surface Electromyography Provides Neuromuscular Insights for Skill Acquisition in Microgravity.

The human motor system has evolved to perform efficient motor control in Earth's gravity. Altered gravity environments, such as microgravity and hypergravity, pose unique challenges for performing fine motor tasks with object manipulation. Altered gravity has been shown to reduce the speed and accuracy of complex manual tasks. This study aims to leverage electromyography (EMG) and virtual reality (VR) technologies to provide insights into the neuromuscular mechanism of object weight compensation. Seven healthy subjects were recruited to perform arm and hand movements, including a customized Bo

Prediction of space motion sickness susceptibility by disconjugate eye torsion in parabolic flight.

The hypothesis of asymmetric otolith function asserts that physiological or anatomical differences in the two sides of the bilateral gravity-sensing otolith apparatus of the inner ear may be well compensated on Earth, but when exposed to novel gravitational states, the prior compensatory stratagems may be ineffective, leading to unstable vestibular responses and causing the phenomenon of space motion sickness. To investigate this hypothesis, spontaneous eye torsion, a reflex governed by the otolith organs, was examined in the upright position during the hypo- and hypergravity of parabolic flig

Motion sickness decreases arterial pressure and therefore acceleration tolerance.

BACKGROUND: Motion sickness is a common aeromedical problem that may occur in pilots exposed to increased gravitoinertial load in the head-to-foot direction (+Gz). Since motion sickness may affect autonomic nervous functions including cardiovascular control, it was hypothesized that it might interfere with cardiovascular responses to high +Gz, thereby decreasing G tolerance. METHODS: G tolerance and cardiovascular responses to increased G load were studied in nine subjects in a centrifuge environment under two conditions. In the motion sickness condition, the subject was exposed to a motion s

Acute soft tissue neck injury from unexpected acceleration.

Recent evidence has identified a risk of neck injury resulting from exposure to high sustained G force during operation of fast jet military aircraft. This review considers the risk of acute soft tissue neck injury when exposure to acceleration is unexpected by the individual. In a military jet, this might occur to a back seat occupant such as an instructor or weapons operator/navigator, but unexpected forces may also be encountered by roller coaster riders and human centrifuge users under certain conditions. The mechanisms of injury in this situation are examined, the effect of acceleration a

Effects of long duration centrifugation on head movements and a psychomotor task.

Previous investigations suggest strong similarities between aftereffects of an 1.5-hour 3 gx centrifuge run (Sickness Induced by Centrifugation; SIC) and the Space Adaptation Syndrome (SAS). Head movements proved to be especially nauseogenic in both cases. Until recently, during SIC experimentation, the performance of head movements was not adequately operationalized, which hampered a statistical evaluation. For this purpose, a test was designed by which head movements in four directions (left, right, up, and down) were provoked and registered, once before and once after a 1-h 3 g centrifuge r

Sustained Accelerated Idioventricular Rhythm in a Centrifuge-Simulated Suborbital Spaceflight.

INTRODUCTION: Hypergravitational exposures during human centrifugation are known to provoke dysrhythmias, including sinus dysrhythmias/tachycardias, premature atrial/ventricular contractions, and even atrial fibrillations or flutter patterns. However, events are generally short-lived and resolve rapidly after cessation of acceleration. This case report describes a prolonged ectopic ventricular rhythm in response to high G exposure. CASE REPORT: A previously healthy 30-yr-old man voluntarily participated in centrifuge trials as a part of a larger study, experiencing a total of 7 centrifuge run

Positional and rotational stability of the toric phakic intraocular lens under high +Gz environments.

BACKGROUND: Phakic intraocular lens (PIOL) implantation is a surgical option for correction of refractive errors. PIOLs can be use to correct myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. It is a surgical option available to patients in addition to methods such as laser cornea refractive surgery, e.g., laser assisted in-situ keratomileusis (LASIK) and photo-refractive keratectomy (PRK). Visian implantable collamer lens (ICL) are posterior chamber lenses which are surgically positioned in a phakic eye in the sulcus between the iris diaphragm and the natural crystalline lens. Establishment and Validation of a Novel Microgravity Simulation Platform for Ground-Based Animal Experiments.

Ground-based analog models, such as the hindlimb unloading (HU) technique, have been used for several decades in simulating microgravity effects on musculoskeletal studies. However, this model has seen limited technological advancement in several aspects. Here, the design and validation of the Microgravity Simulated Platform (MSP), a refined evolution of the classic HU model, is presented. The multipurpose engineered MSP apparatus is designed to overcome key limitations of existing models by enabling simultaneous study of a larger number of mice in compact space, with fewer lesions, less infla

Altered endothelial function in high-performance military fighter pilots.

High-performance fighter pilots are routinely subjected to extreme mechanical and physiological stressors, including exposure to high +Gz accelerations that may impact vascular health. In this short report, we evaluated endothelial function in 20 Eurofighter Typhoon (F-2000A) pilots and 19 matched control pilots flying nonhigh-G aircraft (KC-767A). Flow-mediated dilation (FMD) of the brachial artery was measured before and after flight sorties to assess vascular response. FMD values were lower after flight compared with preflight measurements, reflecting a significant main effect of time acros
