Evaluation of near-infrared hyperspectral imaging for the assessment of potato processing aptitude.

The potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) is the world's fifth most important staple food with high socioeconomic relevance. Several potato cultivars obtained by selection and crossbreeding are currently on the market. This diversity causes tubers to exhibit different behaviors depending on the processing to which they are subjected. Therefore, it is interesting to identify cultivars with specific characteristics that best suit consumer preferences. In this work, we present a method to classify potatoes according to their cooking or frying as crisps aptitude using NIR hyperspectral imaging (HIS) combi

Hyperspectral image processing for the identification and quantification of lentiviral particles in fluid samples.

Optical spectroscopic techniques have been commonly used to detect the presence of biofilm-forming pathogens (bacteria and fungi) in the agro-food industry. Recently, near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy revealed that it is also possible to detect the presence of viruses in animal and vegetal tissues. Here we report a platform based on visible and NIR (VNIR) hyperspectral imaging for non-contact, reagent free detection and quantification of laboratory-engineered viral particles in fluid samples (liquid droplets and dry residue) using both partial least square-discriminant analysis and artificial f

Classification of hyperspectral endocrine tissue images using support vector machines.

BACKGROUND: Thyroidectomy is one of the most commonly performed surgical procedures. The region of the neck has a very complex structural organization. It would be beneficial to introduce a tool that can assist the surgeon in tissue discrimination during the procedure. One such solution is the noninvasive and contactless technique, called hyperspectral imaging (HSI). METHODS: To interpret the HSI data, we implemented a supervised classification method to automatically discriminate the parathyroid, the thyroid, and the recurrent laryngeal nerve from surrounding tissue(muscle, skin) and materia

Design of a compact hyperspectral imaging spectrometer with a freeform surface based on anastigmatism.

Hyperspectral imaging spectrometers with a wide field of view (FoV) have significant application values. However, enhancing the FoV will increase the volume of the imaging spectrometer and reduce the imaging quality, so a wide-FoV spectrometer system is difficult to design. Based on the theory of off-axis astigmatism, we present a method that includes a "prism box," "partial anastigmatism," and a partial differential equation to solve the parameters of a freeform surface. In this method, a compact wide-FoV imaging spectrometer with a freeform surface is designed. The spectrometer is an Offner

Hyperspectral imaging and characterization of allergic contact dermatitis in the short-wave infrared.

Short-wave infrared hyperspectral imaging is applied to diagnose and monitor a case of allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) due to poison ivy exposure in one subject. This approach directly demonstrates increased tissue fluid content in ACD lesional skin with a spectral signature that matches the spectral signature of intradermally injected normal saline. The best contrast between the affected and unaffected skin is achieved through a selection of specific wavelengths at 1070, 1340 and 1605 nm and combining them in a pseudo-red-green-blue color space. An image derived from these wavelengths norma

Combining multiset resolution and segmentation for hyperspectral image analysis of biological tissues.

Hyperspectral images can provide useful biochemical information about tissue samples. Often, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) images have been used to distinguish different tissue elements and changes caused by pathological causes. The spectral variation between tissue types and pathological states is very small and multivariate analysis methods are required to describe adequately these subtle changes. In this work, a strategy combining multivariate curve resolution-alternating least squares (MCR-ALS), a resolution (unmixing) method, which recovers distribution maps and pure spectra of image

Enhancing a Mid-Wave Infrared Fourier Transform Hyperspectral Imager for Explosions.

Capturing reliable hyperspectral imager data at a meaningful frame rate for explosions and other fast-changing scenes is not possible in the mid-wave infrared region under traditional sensor operating configurations and processing techniques, which typically have frame rates on the order of 0.5-2.0 Hz. To combat these shortcomings, the scene acquisition parameters were tailored for explosions and a new method for processing optical signatures of fast transient scenes with Fourier-transform infrared hyperspectral imagers was developed. For this technique, the instrument was first configured to

Explainable Superpixel-Guided Graph Vision Transformer for Hyperspectral Image Analysis.

Hyperspectral imaging provides rich spectral-spatial information for fine-grained material discrimination, but effective and interpretable modeling remains challenging because land-cover regions often have irregular spatial structures and class-specific spectral responses. Conventional methods typically rely on fixed grid patches or local neighborhoods, which may not align with natural object boundaries, whereas pure superpixel or graph models may lose fine pixel-level details. This paper proposes an explainable superpixel-guided graph vision transformer (ESG-ViT) for hyperspectral image class

SEM-EDS and hyperspectral images of vine leaves treated with antifungal products.

Scanning electron microscope, better known by its acronym as SEM, is a very useful technique for obtaining high-resolution images of the surface of a sample. Hyperspectral imaging provides precise information for analysing vineyard vegetation that could help in improving pesticide application in precision viticulture technics. The present dataset is based on images of vineyard leaves, taken with both technics. The leaves of the cv. Tempranillo, proceeding from a vineyard located inside of the Cigales Denomination of Origin, in north-central Spain, were treated with two Cu-containing products:

Hyperspectral imaging for monitoring of free flaps of the oral cavity: A feasibility study.

OBJECTIVES: Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) provides spectral information about hemoglobin, water and oxygen supply and has thus great potential in perfusion monitoring. The aim of the present study was to investigate the feasibility of HSI in the postoperative monitoring of intraoral free flaps. METHODS: The 14 patients receiving reconstructive head and neck surgery with a radial forearm free flap were included. HSI was performed intraoperatively (t0), on Day 1 (t1), 2 (t2), 3-6 (t3), 7-9 (t4), 10-11 (t5) and 12-15 (t6) postoperatively. Flap tissue perfusion was assessed on defined regions of in

Optimal Interpolation for Infrared Products from Hyperspectral Satellite Imagers and Sounders.

Thermal infrared remote sensing measurements have greatly improved in terms of spectral, spatial, and temporal resolution. These improvements are producing a clearer picture of the land surface and Earth atmospheric composition than ever before. Nevertheless, the analysis of this big quantity of data presents important challenges due to incomplete temporal and spatial recorded information. The aim of the present paper is to discuss a methodology to retrieve missing values of some interesting geophysical variables on a spatial field retrieved from spatially scattered infrared satellite observat

Hyperspectral imaging for early detection of oxygenation and perfusion changes in irradiated skin.

Studies examining acute oxygenation and perfusion changes in irradiated skin are limited. Hyperspectral imaging (HSI), a method of wide-field, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, provides noninvasive, quantified measurements of cutaneous oxygenation and perfusion. This study examines whether HSI can assess acute changes in oxygenation and perfusion following irradiation. Skin on both flanks of nude mice (n=20) was exposed to 50 Gy of beta radiation from a strontium-90 source. Hyperspectral images were obtained before irradiation and on selected days for three weeks. Skin reaction assessment was

Monitoring of moisture content in meat emulsion using an SWIR hyperspectral imaging system.

The quality of meat emulsions during mixing is difficult to control because rapid, objective, and non-destructive measurement methods remain limited. This study investigated the effects of lean meat-to-fat ratio and mixing time on moisture content in meat batters using short-wave infrared (1,000-1,700 nm) hyperspectral imaging combined with chemometric modeling. Meat batters were prepared at three lean meat-to-fat ratios: Group A (6:2), Group B (5:3), and Group C (4:4), and mixed for 0, 1, 2, 5, 7, 10, and 15 min. Moisture content differed significantly among formulations, with Group A showing

Enhancing the Accuracy of Skin Lesion Diagnosis Using Hyperspectral Imaging and Deep Learning.

This study presents a novel diagnostic approach that integrates hyperspectral imaging (HSI) with deep learning to discriminate among dermatitis, actinic keratosis (AK), and seborrheic keratosis (SK). We evaluated 60 intraoperative clinical specimens and achieved 93% accuracy, 91% sensitivity, and 95% specificity in three-class classification. A Savitzky-Golay filter was applied to the raw spectra to enhance the signal-to-noise ratio and data fidelity, while first-derivative spectral analysis enabled the model to capture subtle biochemical and morphological differences among lesions. Our result

Spectrum aided vision enhancer enhances mucosal visualization by hyperspectral imaging in capsule endoscopy.

Narrow-band imaging (NBI) is more efficient in detecting early gastrointestinal cancer than white light imaging (WLI). NBI technology is available only in conventional endoscopy, but unavailable in magnetic-assisted capsule endoscopy (MACE) systems due to MACE's small size and obstacles in image processing issues. MACE is an easy, safe, and convenient tool for both patients and physicians to avoid the disadvantages of conventional endoscopy. Enabling NBI technology in MACE is mandatory. We developed a novel method to improve mucosal visualization using hyperspectral imaging (HSI) known as Spec

Hyperspectral retinal imaging in Alzheimer's disease and age-related macular degeneration: a review.

While Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative diseases have traditionally been viewed as brain disorders, there is growing evidence indicating their manifestation in the eyes as well. The retina, being a developmental extension of the brain, represents the only part of the central nervous system that can be noninvasively imaged at a high spatial resolution. The discovery of the specific pathological hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease in the retina of patients holds great promise for disease diagnosis and monitoring, particularly in the early stages where disease progression can potential

Hyperspectral imaging for thermal effect monitoring in in vivo liver during laser ablation.

Thermal ablation is a minimally invasive technique used to induce a controlled necrosis of malignant cells by increasing the temperature in localized areas. This procedure needs an accurate and real-time monitoring of thermal effects to evaluate and control treatment outcome. In this work, a hyperspectral imaging (HSI) technique is proposed as a new and non-invasive method to monitor ablative therapy. HSI provides images of the target object in several spectral bands, hence the reflectance/absorbance spectrum for each pixel. This paper presents a preliminary and original HSI-based analysis of

Hyperspectral interventional imaging for enhanced tissue visualization and discrimination combining band selection methods.

PURPOSE: Hyperspectral imaging is an emerging technology recently introduced in medical applications inasmuch as it provides a powerful tool for noninvasive tissue characterization. In this context, a new system was designed to be easily integrated in the operating room in order to detect anatomical tissues hardly noticed by the surgeon's naked eye. METHOD: Our LCTF-based spectral imaging system is operative over visible, near- and middle-infrared spectral ranges (400-1700 nm). It is dedicated to enhance critical biological tissues such as the ureter and the facial nerve. We aim to find the b

Hyperspectral Imaging for Agricultural and Food Sensing: Applications, Data Analytics, and Deployment Challenges.

Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) combines spatial and spectral information and has been widely investigated for nondestructive sensing in agriculture and food. This review examines HSI applications in crop growth monitoring, abiotic and biotic stress detection, soil assessment, and postharvest quality and safety inspection. Particular attention is given to how acquisition configuration, spectral preprocessing, feature extraction, and machine- or deep-learning models affect performance across laboratory, field, and production-line settings. Recent studies show that red-edge and shortwave-infrared fe

Spatially resolved quantification of wheat kernel vitreousness using hyperspectral imaging and spectral unmixing.

INTRODUCTION: Wheat kernel hardness, vitreousness, and creaseness are key determinants of milling performance, yet they reflect different physical scales of grain structure and are not necessarily coupled. METHODS: We developed a digital phenotyping framework based on hyperspectral imaging and spectral unmixing to quantify these traits at both kernel and cultivar levels in a diverse panel of common wheat. Pixel-level spectral unmixing resolved glassy, intermediate, and mealy endosperm components within individual kernels, enabling vitreousness to be expressed as a continuous spatial index. R
