Influence of GABA-acting drugs on morphine-induced hyperthermia in rats.

A major inhibitory neurotransmitter of the nervous system, GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid), is involved in mammalian thermoregulation. The present study investigated the influence of GABAergic neurotransmission-enhancing drugs, in a model of morphine-induced hyperthermia in conscious rats. We used body temperature assays to examine the effects of GABA-acting drugs on morphine-induced hyperthermia. In rats, low doses of morphine injected i.p. produced significant hyperthermia in a body temperature assay that was significantly attenuated upon pretreatment with GABA-acting drugs. These results sug

Evidence that oxymorphone-induced increases in micronuclei occur secondary to hyperthermia.

Oxymorphone is a potent opioid analgesic. Oral administration of oxymorphone to rats at doses >or= 20 mg/kg and mice at 500 mg/kg produced an increase in micronucleated polychromatic erythrocytes (MPCEs). Oxymorphone does not produce chromosome aberrations in vitro, suggesting that the increased MPCEs in vivo may involve indirect mechanisms. Opioids are known to affect thermoregulatory mechanisms. Changes in body temperature can increase the incidence of MPCEs in rodents. Studies were conducted to examine the relationship between increased MPCEs in rats given oxymorphone and changes in body te

A mechanism of hyperthermia-induced apoptosis in ras-transformed lung cells.

Lung cancer, the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in both men and women, is the consequence of disordered apoptosis, induction of which may have therapeutic utility. Hyperthermia has been identified as a stimulus for apoptosis. We investigated the mechanism of hyperthermia-induced cell death in ras-transformed lung cells. Effect of hyperthermia (43 degrees C for 180 min) was compared between two cell lines, an immortalized (sv-40) normal human bronchial epithelial (BEAS2-B) and its malignant transformed (H-ras transfected) counterpart (BZR-T33). Survival after hyperthermia: 7-d growth cu

Immunohistochemical study on the fetal rat pituitary in hyperthermia-induced exencephaly.

Hyperthermia of fetal rats is known to cause malformations of various organs including brain. The present study was carried out to investigate the effect of the hyperthermia-induced brain damages on the development of the adenohypophysis. Mother rats of day 9.5 of pregnancy were anesthetized and immersed in hot water (43 degrees C) for 15 min. At day 21.5 of gestation, fetuses were removed by caesarian section and examined for exencephaly. Hyperthermal stress induced varying degrees of exencephaly in 36% of surviving fetal rats. In extreme cases a considerable part of head was lost. Even in th

[Treatment of malignant or aggressive bone tumors with microwave induced hyperthermia].

Limb-sparing procedures have been well established for dealing with malignant bone tumors. Unfortunately, these procedures have different problems. We used an alternative operation combined with microwave-induced hyperthemia to modify the surgical methods. Thermotherapy with microwave intracorporeal irradiation was used to treat 112 patients with bone tumors. In this series, 79 had malignant tumors and 33 aggressive benigh tumors. Postoperatively, immune therapy was carried out regularly. The patients immunologic functions were monitored by assay of the subpopulation of T cells, IL-2 and sIL-2

Preliminary report on treatment of bone tumors with microwave-induced hyperthermia.

Between July, 1992, and February, 1995, 62 patients with various bone tumors were treated with microwave-induced hyperthermia. The series had 47 cases of malignant tumors and 15 cases with benign tumors; most of the tumors occurred at or near knee joints (53/62 = 85.4%). The surgical procedure consisted of separating the tumorous segment from surrounding normal tissues with a safe margin, cooling the normal tissues (including the vital neurovascular bundle and the intrajoint structures) with a water circulation system while heating the tumor simultaneously with the microwave antenna array, and

Reversal of depressed miduterine arterial flow during hyperthermia-induced respiratory alkalosis.

The influence of ambient and arterial PCO2 on miduterine arterial flow of pregnant sheep acutely exposed to hot environments was investigated. Five mixed-breed ewes between 120 and 130 days of gestation were subjected to hot environments (increasing from thermoneutral 23 to 40 degrees C), and arterial blood pH, PCO2, and PO2 were determined at 5-min intervals. Respiratory rate, heart rate, rectal temperature, blood pressure, and miduterine arterial flow were continuously monitored prior to and during elevation of ambient air temperature. When miduterine arterial flow had decreased to 50% of th

[Extracorporeally induced whole-body hyperthermia in conventionally incurable malignant tumor patients].

Whole body hyperthermia was produced in 14 patients with conventionally incurable malignant disease. The technique consisted of arteriovenous shunting involving extracorporeal circulation with heat exchange during general anaesthesia. A temperature of 41.8 degrees C was maintained for periods of 6 hours. After achieving hyperthermic temperatures treatment was enlarged by administration of 5-fluorouracil (1000 mg) in patients with colorectal carcinoma and by dacarazine (200 mg/m2) in patients with malignant melanoma. In 5 out 6 patients with stage IV colorectal carcinoma stabilisation of the di

Thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH)-induced hyperthermia and behavioral excitation in rabbits.

The intraventricular administration of thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) to conscious rabbits produces a dose-related increase in body temperature, a compulsive scratching syndrome, and behavioral excitation. These effects are not antagonized by most adrenergic or serotonergic blockers, amine depletors, or most depressants. Given to rabbits pretreated with anesthetic doses of barbiturates or high doses of other sedatives or neuroleptics, TRH exerts an analeptic effect. The duration of pentobarbital anesthesia is markedly shortened. Of all the depressants tested, only morphine was resistant t

Caffeine attenuates spermatogenic disorders in mice with induced chronic scrotal hyperthermia.

OBJECTIVE: Chronic scrotal hyperthermia (SHT) can lead to serious disorders of the male reproductive system, with oxidative stress playing a key role in the onset of these dysfunctions. Thus, we evaluated the impact of caffeine, a potent antioxidant, on cellular and tissue disorders in mice with chronic SHT. METHODS: In this experimental study, 56 adult male NMRI mice were allocated into seven equal groups. Apart from the non-treated control group, all were exposed to heat stress. Two groups, termed "preventive" and "curative," were orally administered caffeine. The preventive mice began rece

Photobiomodulation therapy reverses spermatogenesis arrest in hyperthermia-induced azoospermia mouse model.

Testicular heat stress leads to impairment of spermatogenesis in mammals. Involved mechanism in this vulnerability to heat-induced injury remains unclear, and research is being conducted to find an approach to reverse spermatogenesis arrest caused by hyperthermia. Recently, different studies have utilized photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) therapy for the improvement of sperm criteria and fertility. This study aimed at evaluating the effect of PBMT on the improvement of spermatogenesis in mouse models of hyperthermia-induced azoospermia. A total of 32 male NMRI mice were equally divided into fo

Antipsychotic Medication-Induced Hyperthermia Leading to Cerebrovascular Accident: A Case Report.

Antipsychotic medications are used in the management of schizophrenia. Antipsychotic medications treat both positive and negative symptoms via the dopamine D2 receptor and serotonin 5-HT2A blockade pathway. Side effects include hyperprolactinemia, prolonged QTc, and neuroleptic malignant syndrome. However, antipsychotic medication-induced hyperthermia potentiating a cerebrovascular accident (CVA) is a rare side effect that is less well known. A 47-year-old male presented to the emergency department (ED) via emergency medical services for altered mental status. He was given naloxone without imp

Anesthesia-induced rhabdomyolysis or malignant hyperthermia: is defining the crisis important?

Anesthesia-induced rhabdomyolysis and malignant hyperthermia occur in response to the same agents and present with similar clinical features. Distinguishing between these diagnoses can be challenging in a clinical crisis yet making the distinction is critical as prompt appropriate management may be life-saving, whereas delayed recognition and/or inappropriate management will almost certainly result in death. This focused review examines the differences between these conditions and focuses on the emergency management of anesthesia-induced rhabdomyolysis.
