An alternative clinical approach to achieve greater anterior than posterior maxillary expansion in cleft lip and palate patients.

Cleft lip and palate patients commonly present maxillary constriction, particularly in the anterior region. The aim of this case report was to describe an alternative clinical approach that used a smaller Hyrax screw unconventionally positioned to achieve greater anterior than posterior expansion in patients with complete unilateral cleft lip and palate. The idea presented here is to take advantage of a reduced dimension screw to position it anteriorly. When only anterior expansion was needed (patient 1), the appliance was soldered to the first premolar bands and associated to a transpalatal a

The elephants of Zoba Gash Barka, Eritrea: part 4. Cholelithiasis in a wild African elephant (Loxodonta africana).

A 4.0-kg cholelith was found within the abdominal cavity of a dead wild African elephant (Loxodonta africana) in Eritrea. Analysis of this cholelith by histochemistry, electron microscopy, electrospray mass spectroscopy, and energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy revealed it was composed of bile alcohols but no calcium, bilirubin, or cholesterol. Bacteria were also found in the cholelith. Similar, but smaller, bile stones have been identified previously in other wild African elephants and an excavated mammoth (Mammuthus columbi). Choleliths have been reported only once in a captive Asian elephan

Burden and risk factors of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Ethiopia: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is a major public health problem in Ethiopia. About 30 million people are at risk, and there are 20,000 to 50,000 new cases annually. It is maintained by rock hyraxes and Phlebotomus sand flies. Different studies showed the presence and risk factors of CL. However, there is no study on the pooled prevalence and risk factors. This study aimed to determine the pooled prevalence and risk factors of CL in Ethiopia. METHOD: We retrieved published articles from different databases. The review was conducted based on PRISMA guidelines. The meta-analysis was

Three-Dimensional Finite Element Analysis of Maxillary Protraction Using Diverse Modes of Rapid Palatal Expansion.

INTRODUCTION: Three-dimensional finite elemental analysis (FEA) is a contemporary research instrument for the numeric simulation of a real physical system's mechanical process. FEA can be used as a very effective tool to analyze and compare various aspects of rapid palatal expanders and to determine the stress distribution in maxillofacial bones and displacement and the biomechanical effects it has on the circummaxillary sutures. This study evaluates the effects of different modes of rapid palatal expansion on maxillary protraction as a treatment modality in skeletal Class III malocclusion by

Mandibular midline distraction osteogenesis: a complex case with severe crowding.

This article reports on a patient with severe maxillary and mandibular crowding treated by both expansion and extraction treatment. Two surgical procedures, surgically assisted palatal expansion and a mandibular midline osteotomy, were performed in sequence for skeletal expansion. A hybrid appliance, consisting of a Hyrax screw and 2 miniplates, was used in the mandible. Since expansion was not enough for relief of the crowding, 3 premolars were later extracted. The patient's final occlusion was satisfactory, but genioplasty may be desired in the future.

Quad-helix compression to decompensate molar inclination prior to skeletal expansion.

OBJECTIVES: To demonstrate that patients without posterior crossbite (PCB) but with maxillary transverse deficiency, not previously observed due to an increased curve of Wilson, can benefit from the same palatal expansion as patients with PCB, after correction of the buccal inclination. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 41 patients presenting a maxillary skeletal transverse deficiency were treated: 26 without PCB and 15 with PCB. In the non-PCB group, quad-helix compression was followed by a Hyrax expander (QH+HY), whereas the PCB group only underwent Hyrax expander treatment (HY). The maxill

Host feeding preference of Phlebotomus guggisbergi, a vector of Leishmania tropica in Kenya.

Recently the sandfly Phlebotomus guggisbergi was found to be a vector of Leishmania tropica causing cutaneous leishmaniasis in the Laikipia focus, Kenya, but extensive searches have shed no light on the identity of the rural reservoir host(s). In order to discover more about the biology of the vector, a host feeding preference study was conducted on wild sandflies in their natural cave environment over a 6-month period. Solid state Army miniature (SSAM) traps, without light bulb, were suspended over cages with potential hosts or an empty cage control. The animals tested included sheep, goat, d

A simplified de novo approach for vector control in facemask therapy.

One of the most common clinical challenges encountered with facemask therapy for early correction of skeletal Class III malocclusions is the delivery of appropriate direction of force for effecting the pure translation of maxilla. This technical note describes a novel method involving the use of Begg's auxiliary for achieving efficient and predictable delivery of protraction forces. With this modified assembly, effective vector control for facemask can be achieved without the need to remove the bonded Hyrax assembly. This chairside modification is an effective and invaluable method for predict
