[Hysteria I. Histrionic personality disorder. A psychotherapeutic challenge].

What is left of Freud's hysteria in modern diagnostics is the histrionic personality. Psychological and somatic functional disorders, such as dissociative and somatoform disorders are freed from the label of being hysterical, but even the histrionic personality disorder does not enjoy professional agreement as far as diagnostics and therapy are concerned. This disorder is characterized by dramatization, suggestibility, superficial changing affects, impressionist cognitive style, preoccupation with outward appearance, seductive behavior and the wish to take centre stage, a compensatory attitude

From Hysteria to the Creation of a Functional Neurological Disorder Clinic.

This personal essay details a psychiatrist's experience of her female patient's dissociation, which led to questions about the role of women in society. A brief review of societal norms reveals that women have always presented in medicine with disguised disorders. Collaboration with a neurologist and a team of like-minded providers leads to the development of a nonepileptic seizure (NES) disorder clinic.

Alternating hemiplegia of childhood misdiagnosed as hysteria: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Alternating hemiplegia of childhood (AHC) is a rare pediatric syndrome characterized by recurring episodes of hemiplegia or quadriplegia, and frequently accompanied by dystonic posturing, choreoathetosis movements, anomalous ocular motions, and a gradual deterioration in cognitive function. The principal etiology of this disorder is traced back to mutations in the ATP1A3 gene. CASE PRESENTATION: Here, we report a 16-year-old girl with recurrent hemiplegia since her infancy. This patient has experienced paroxysmal limb weakness and aphasia for over 15 years, and has kept seeking me

Pibloktoq (hysteria) and Inuit nutrition: possible implication of hypervitaminosis A.

The hysterical reaction among Eskimo peoples known as pibloktoq, one of a group of aberrant behaviors occurring among Arctic and Circumarctic societies termed 'arctic hysterias', has been explained by a variety of theories: ecological, nutritional, biological-physiological, psychological-psychoanalytic, social structural and cultural. This study hypothesizes the possible implication of vitamin intoxication, namely, hypervitaminosis A, in the etiology of some cases of pibloktoq. Its biocultural approach implicates elements of several explanatory classes, which are not mutually exclusive. Experi

The validity and significance of the clinical diagnosis of hysteria (Briquet's syndrome).

The author states that a valid diagnostic classification based on the medical model is a sine qua non for progress in psychiatric research and treatment and that such classification requires follow-up and family studies. To illustrate this point he reports on studies showing that hysteria, or Briquet's syndrome, is a valid clinical entity that follows a predictable course and clusters in certain families. He also reports that an association between hysteria and sociopathy has been demonstrated, suggesting that the two conditions may arise from sililar etiologic and pathogenetic factors.

[From preconceived ideas on hysteria to functional neurological disorder].

Functional neurological disorders (FND), formerly called «conversion hysteria», are still poorly understood diseases that suffer from an outdated, sometimes erroneous and stigmatizing conception on the part of health care teams. Enlightened by historical concepts, we propose a modern reading of FND with the aim of deconstructing preconceived ideas and proposing a global, benevolent and individualized approach.

The Classification of Hysteria and Related Disorders: Historical and Phenomenological Considerations.

This article examines the history of the conceptualization of dissociative, conversion, and somatoform syndromes in relation to one another, chronicles efforts to classify these and other phenomenologically-related psychopathology in the American diagnostic system for mental disorders, and traces the subsequent divergence in opinions of dissenting sectors on classification of these disorders. This article then considers the extensive phenomenological overlap across these disorders in empirical research, and from this foundation presents a new model for the conceptualization of these disorders.

Diagnosis revisited (and revisited): the case of hysteria and the hysterical personality.

A discussion of "The Hysterical Personality Disorder," by Gordon Baumbacher, M.D., and Fariborz Amini, M.D. The effort of Baumbacher and Amini at clarification of the diagnostic meaning of the group they designate hysterical personality disorder is discussed within the context of all the difficult and problematic conceptual and definitional dilemmas that exist within psychiatric and psychoanalytic nomenclature. The following discussion presents the issues of psychologic-psychodynamic as opposed to medical-somatic nosology in general and the special problems inherent within the realm of hysteri

Presence of Obsessionality and Hysteria in Patients with Primary Open-Angle Glaucoma.

Background and Objectives: Glaucoma is a group of conditions of the eye that can damage the optic nerve, leading to optic neuropathy. Nevertheless, due to its chronic characteristics, it could also be the background for psychoneurotic disorders based on the psychological and emotional stress that it causes. The presented study aimed to examine the characteristics and the occurrence of obsessionality and hysteria, as well as Open-Angle Glaucoma (OAG) in glaucoma patients. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in the Clinic for Eye Diseases at the Clinical Hospital Center

From hysteria to gait dementia: History of the concept of astasia-abasia.

Paul Blocq (1860-1896) and his teacher Jean-Martin Charcot (1825-1893) introduced the expression "astasia-abasia" into medical terminology in 1888 to designate a pathology they believed to be caused by hysteria. This condition makes it impossible to remain erect and to walk, whereas the ability to move the legs while lying down remains normal. At the turn of the 20th century, and now almost exclusively, this motor disturbance is recognised as a syndrome with multiple possible organic causes, and now described as "higher-level gait disorder". After briefly mentioning earlier descriptions by oth

[Voluntary changes of visual evoked potentials in cases with hysteria and/or simulation].

We report a 25-year-old woman with gradual loss of visual acuteness, during puerperium and blindness in fifteen days. Two months latter she remain steady. Visual evoked potentials using monocular checkerboard pattern-reversal, were abnormal. Clinical suspicion of voluntary alteration of VEP was considered. A second VEP exploration with binocular stimulation and maneuvers of distraction were carried out. Normal VEP were recorded. Deliberate alteration of the visual evoked potential should be considered in patients suspicious of hysteria or malingering.

Multiple personalities. A report of 14 cases with implications for Schizophrenia and hysteria.

Evidence exists to support the concept of pathology or diseases of hypnosis. Multiple personalities is such a syndrome, as are many or perhaps all cases of hysteria (Briquet's syndrome). The crux of multiple personalities is the subject's unrecognized abuse of self-hypnosis, by which she creates personalities, beginning at age 4 to 6 years. The process of self-hypnosis allows the delegation of an experience or a function to an alter ago, henceforth relegated to unconsciousness by the amnesia of hypnosis. Most of these patients qualify for the diagnosis of hysteria (Briquet's syndrome), and man
