Streptococcus ovis associated abortion in an Icelandic mare.

Streptococci are well-known opportunistic bacterial abortifacients in mares. Colonization of the pregnant uterus is considered to happen after transcervical migration of bacteria from the lower genital tract mucosa. Streptococcus ovis is a pathogen mainly associated with inflammatory lesions in sheep. This species has not been reported in association with disease in horses. In the present case, S. ovis was isolated in monoculture from the lung of an 8-months-old equine fetus and was associated with development of acute suppurative bronchopneumonia, umbilical cord cellulitis and placentitis in

[Asbestos and its effects on health of Icelanders - review].

Asbestos are crystallized silicate minerals that form fibers with different structures and characteristics. Asbestos fibers are very durable and can tolerate very high temperatures. Therefore it was common to use asbestos as a fire retardants, heat insulation and where high temperature is used. Asbestos has been banned in Iceland from 1983 but can still be found in large amounts in buildings, ships and hot water pipes. Large amounts of asbestos were imported in the years before the ban but diminished soon to almost nothing today. Needle or filamentous shaped dust is released when working with

[Malaria in Iceland, a rare but looming threat for travelers].

INTRODUCTION: Malaria is one of the most common causes of preventable deaths in the developing countries, especially among children. A previous study of imported malaria in Iceland during 1980-1997 identified 15 confirmed cases. The objective of this retrospective study was to update epidemiological data on malaria in Iceland, 1998-2014. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The inclusion criteria were a positive thick or thin blood smear for malaria parasites at the Dept. of Microbiology at Landspitali University Hospital, which serves as a referral laboratory for malaria diagnosis in the country. CDKN2A mutations and melanoma risk in the Icelandic population.

BACKGROUND: Germline CDKN2A mutations have been observed in 20-40% of high risk, melanoma prone families; however, little is known about their prevalence in population based series of melanoma cases and controls. METHODS: We resequenced the CDKN2A gene, including the p14ARF variant and promoter regions, in approximately 703 registry ascertained melanoma cases and 691 population based controls from Iceland, a country in which the incidence of melanoma has increased rapidly. RESULTS: We identified a novel germline variant, G89D, that was strongly associated with increased melanoma risk and app

Polymorphism of PRNP codons in the normal Icelandic population.

OBJECTIVES: Polymorphisms in the prion protein gene in humans influence susceptibility to, and phenotype of, prion diseases. Methionine-methionine (MM) homozygosity at codon 129 is a risk factor for sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD). Polymorphism at codon 117 and changes in the octapeptide repeat region have been associated with genetic CJD. Knowledge of genetic background in normal populations may contribute to better understanding of prion diseases. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Polymorphism at codon 129, codon 117 and deletions of octapetide repeats were studied in 208 healthy blood donors

High incidence of kidney stones in Icelandic children.

All children less than 18 years of age who were diagnosed with a first episode of kidney stones at pediatric referral centers in Iceland during the years 1995-2000 were studied retrospectively. The diagnosis was based on clinical features and results of imaging studies. Patients were invited for evaluation at the end of the study period. Twenty-six patients (15 females, 11 males), median age 9.4 (range 0.2-14.9) years, experienced 34 episodes of kidney stones. The annual incidence was 5.6 and 6.3 per 100,000 children less than 18 and 16 years of age, respectively. Abdominal pain was the most c

Genetic changes in breast carcinomas in an Icelandic population.

We have examined breast tumour samples from 109 unselected breast cancer patients for genetic changes on chromosomes 13 and 17. We have looked for allelic losses, firstly, at the retinoblastoma locus, RB1, on chromosome 13q, and secondly, on both arms of chromosome 17. We have also studied the same samples for amplification of the erbB2 oncogene. We searched for mutations in four well conserved areas of the p53 gene using constant denaturant gradient electrophoresis (CDGE). Allelic loss or rearrangement was detected in a large proportion of the tumours, affecting 37-51% of cases with different
