Activity before exercise influences recovery metabolism in the lizard Dipsosaurus dorsalis.

During recovery from even a brief period of exercise, metabolic rate remains elevated above resting levels for extended periods. The intensity and duration of exercise as well as body temperature and hormone levels can influence this excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC). We examined the influence of activity before exercise (ABE), commonly termed warm-up in endotherms, on EPOC in the desert iguana Dipsosaurus dorsalis. The rate of oxygen consumption and blood lactate levels were measured in 11 female D. dorsalis (mass 41.1 +/- 3.0 g; mean +/- s.e.m.) during rest, after two types of A

Integrating gastrocnemius force-length properties, in vivo activation and operating lengths reveals how Anolis deal with ecological challenges.

A central question in biology is how animals successfully behave under complex natural conditions. Although changes in locomotor behaviour, motor control and force production in relation to incline are commonly examined, a wide range of other factors, including a range of perch diameters, pervades arboreal habitats. Moving on different substrate diameters requires considerable alteration of body and limb posture, probably causing significant shifts in the lengths of the muscle-tendon units powering locomotion. Thus, how substrate shape impacts in vivo muscle function remains an important but n

Molecular characterisation of Cryptosporidium isolates from pet reptiles.

In this study, we investigated the presence of Cryptosporidium in 171 faecal samples from reptiles commonly used as pet animals. These include lizards belonging to the genera Eublepharis, Pogona, Chlamydosaurus, Hemiteconyx, Teratoscincus, Tiliqua, Iguana, and Chamaeleo, snakes of the genera Lampropeltis, Elaphe, Python, Boa and Corallus, and tortoises belonging to the genera Testudo and Kinixys. Cryptosporidium oocysts were detected by immunofluorescence using a commercially available kit and cryptosporidial DNA by amplification of a polymorphic fragment of the 18S rDNA and the HSP70 locus. Description and etiology of paleopathological lesions in the type specimen of Parasaurolophus walkeri (Dinosauria: Hadrosauridae), with proposed reconstructions of the nuchal ligament.

Paleopathology, or the study of ancient injuries and diseases, can enable the ecology and life history of extinct taxa to be deciphered. Large-bodied ornithopods are the dinosaurs with the highest frequencies of paleopathology reported to-date. Among these, the crested hadrosaurid Parasaurolophus walkeri is one of the most famous, largely due to its dramatic elongated and tubular nasal crest. The holotype of Parasaurolophus walkeri at the Royal Ontario Museum, Canada, displays several paleopathologies that have not been discussed in detail previously: a dental lesion in the left maxilla, perha

Molecular evidence to support the expansion of the hostrange of Chlamydophila pneumoniae to include reptiles as well as humans, horses, koalas and amphibians.

The Chlamydiales are a family of unique intracellular pathogens that cause significant disease in humans, birds and a wide range of animal hosts. Of the currently recognized species, Chlamydophila (previously Chlamydia) pneumoniae, unlike the other chlamydial species, has been previously considered to be solely a pathogen of humans, causing significant respiratory disease and has also been strongly connected with cardiovascular disease. Here we report the finding that strains of C. pneumoniae are widespread in the environment, being detected by molecular methods in a range of reptiles (snakes,

The tail of Tyrannosaurus: reassessing the size and locomotive importance of the M. caudofemoralis in non-avian theropods.

Unlike extant birds and mammals, most non-avian theropods had large muscular tails, with muscle arrangements similar to those of modern reptiles. Examination of ornithomimid and tyrannosaurid tails revealed sequential diagonal scarring on the lateral faces of four or more hemal spines that consistently correlates with the zone of the tail just anterior to the disappearance of the vertebral transverse processes. This sequential scarring is interpreted as the tapering boundary between the insertions of the M. caudofemoralis and the M. ilioischiocaudalis. Digital muscle reconstructions based on m

Design and experimental analysis of a new malleovestibulopexy prosthesis using a finite element model of the human middle ear.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Many designs of prostheses are available for middle ear surgery. In this study we propose a design for a new prosthesis, which optimises mechanical performance in the human middle ear and improves some deficiencies in the prostheses currently available. Our objective was to design and assess the theoretical acoustic-mechanical behaviour of this new total ossicular replacement prosthesis. METHODS: The design of this new prosthesis was based on an animal model (an iguana). For the modelling and mechanical analysis of the new prosthesis, we used a dynamic 3D computer

Nosocomial salmonellosis: implications for microbiologic processing of stools in hospitalized patients.

Many microbiology laboratories are rationalizing their services and are not culturing stool for bacterial and parasitic pathogens from patients hospitalized for more than 3 days. We report a sporadic case of nosocomial salmonellosis that highlights the need for ongoing communication among clinicians, infection control personnel, and laboratories to allow for modification of such a routine laboratory protocol should epidemiologic evidence warrant.

Lizard bites of the head and neck.

BACKGROUND: As the ownership of lizards becomes more prevalent in the United States, injuries from these exotic pets will increase. Emergency and primary care physicians must be familiar with the proper management of lizard bites to the head and neck. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this case report is to discuss the potential complications and proper management of lizard bites to the head and neck. CASE REPORT: A 47-year-old man presented to the emergency department 3 h after his 5-foot iguana bit his face. The wounds were irrigated and primarily closed. Tetanus prophylaxis was administered. He was

The pineal and circadian rhythms of temperature selection and locomotion in lizards.

The existence of a circadian rhythm of behavioral temperature selection has been demonstrated in lizards (Podarcis sicula) held on a thermal gradient in constant darkness. This rhythm becomes temporarily abolished during 1 week following parietalectomy and 2-3 weeks following pinealectomy. Parietalectomy does not affect the locomotor rhythm, while pinealectomy invariably lengthens the freerunning period of this rhythm. These results support the contention of separate control systems for the temperature selection rhythm and the locomotor rhythm. As neither rhythm is definitively abolished by pa

Osteomyelitis due to Salmonella enterica subsp. arizonae: the price of exotic pets.

We describe a 31-year-old immunocompromised patient who developed sepsis and osteomyelitis due to Salmonella enterica subsp. arizonae secondary to exposure to iguana and snakes kept as pets at her home, and review all 23 previously published cases of bone and joint infections due to this organism, for a total of nine children and 15 adults. Eleven of the adults were female (73%), compared with three (33%) of the children (p <0.01). Significant underlying illnesses were present in all 15 adults and in five children (55%, p <0.05); 10 (77%) of the adults were immunosuppressed, compared with one

Contribution of gular pumping to lung ventilation in monitor lizards.

A controversial hypothesis has proposed that lizards are subject to a speed-dependent axial constraint that prevents effective lung ventilation during moderate- and high-speed locomotion. This hypothesis has been challenged by results demonstrating that monitor lizards (genus Varanus) experience no axial constraint. Evidence presented here shows that, during locomotion, varanids use a positive pressure gular pump to assist lung ventilation. Disabling the gular pump reveals that the axial constraint is present in varanids but it is masked by gular pumping under normal conditions. These findings

Developmental appearance, species and tissue specificity of mouse 23-kDa, a retinal calcium-binding protein (recoverin).

A 23-kDa, soluble, calcium-binding photoreceptor-specific protein (23-kDa) has been shown to be identical to recoverin and the cancer-associated retinopathy protein. Recoverin has been reported to activate guanylate cyclase to increase the amount of cyclic GMP and thereby reopen cation channels within the photoreceptor cells. In this study, the 23-kDa protein was purified from bovine retinas and monospecific antibodies against it were generated in rabbits. Western analysis demonstrated 23-kDa in retinas from human, monkey, bovine, dog, rabbit, rat, mouse, frog, chameleon and iguana although it

Comprehensive methodology for evaluating the immobility responses in laboratory animals.

From an evolutionary perspective, all organisms have two purposes: self-preservation and reproduction, in which immobility responses (IR) are implicated, these are ancestral survival strategies used to avoid serious injury or death. Immobility responses are adaptive reactions present in many species across virtually the entire phylogenetic spectrum, characterized by behavioral arrest and reduced responsiveness, serving evolutionary roles in prey-predator, mating, and offspring-carrying contexts. Several brain structures-including the brainstem, limbic system, striatum, and cortex-modulate IR b

Evaluation of the sequence method as a tool to assess spontaneous baroreflex in reptiles.

The sequence method is an alternative to the traditional pharmacological approach (i.e., the Oxford technique) used to calculate baroreflex gain (G) in mammals. Although the sequence method assesses baroreflex by measuring spontaneous events of blood pressure regulation, the pharmacological method relies on the injection of vasoactive drugs that impact the baroreflex mechanism itself. The sequence method might be relevant for dynamic measurement of baroreflex modulation but it was never validated for vertebrates with low heart rate. Hence, we tested the sequence method in three species of rept

Biomechanical modeling and sensitivity analysis of bipedal running ability. I. Extant taxa.

I used a simple mathematical model of the inverse dynamics of locomotion to estimate the minimum muscle masses required to maintain quasi-static equilibrium about the four main limb joints at mid-stance of fast running. Models of 10 extant taxa (a human, a kangaroo, two lizards, an alligator, and five birds) were analyzed in various bipedal poses to examine how anatomy, size, limb orientation, and other model parameters influence running ability. I examined how the muscle masses required for fast running compare to the muscle masses that are actually able to exert moments about the hip, knee,

Molecular Subtyping of Blastocystis from Diverse Animals in the United Arab Emirates.

The contribution of Blastocystis from non-human hosts to zoonotic transmission is only partly known. The objective of this study was to determine the distribution of Blastocystis genetic subtypes in different animal species in United Arab Emirates. A total of 114 stool samples were tested using PCR of the small subunit (SSU) rRNA gene and sequence analysis. Twenty-three Blastocystis-positive samples were identified. The following detection rates were observed: cattle, 22.7%; sheep, 63.6%; rabbits, 33.3%; rodents, 37.5%; reptiles, 21.2%. Four subtypes were identified in this study; ST4, ST10, S
