The long-term co-occurrence of psychiatric illness and behavioral problems following child sexual abuse.

OBJECTIVES: There is a growing body of research investigating the relationship between child sexual abuse and a range of adverse outcomes. However, very little is known about the long-term co-occurrence of psychiatric disorders and behavioral problems among this vulnerable population, or the interaction between characteristics of the abuse, such as the nature and timing of the child sexual abuse, and the extent of subsequent adversities. This study aimed to determine the rate and co-occurrence of mental health morbidity, criminal justice system contact, and fatal self-harm among medically conf

Understanding self-management behaviors in symptomatic adults with uncertain etiology using an illness perceptions framework.

The self-management behaviors of individuals with medical conditions that have an unknown etiology have not been studied. This study assesses the relationship between illness perceptions and various illness self-management behaviors in patients undergoing clinical genomic sequencing to identify a genetic cause for their condition. Hierarchical linear regression, Poisson linear regression, and logistic regression were used to assess the effect of illness perceptions (i.e., perceived consequences, timeline, personal control, treatment control, identity, concern, understanding, emotional impact,

How Does Illness Perception Affect the Quality of Life and Sun Protection Behaviors of Rosacea Patients?

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have noted the link between rosacea severity and quality of life, but there is limited understanding of how disease perception impacts these aspects. Additionally, sun exposure is identified as a common trigger for rosacea flare-ups, emphasizing the importance of sun protection practices in managing the condition. This cross-sectional study aims to fill the gap in the literature by investigating the relationship between clinical severity, disease perception, quality of life, and sun protection behaviors in rosacea patients. METHODS: Questionnaires assessing the qu

Juvenile Correctional Officer Beliefs About Trauma and Mental Illness: Perceptions of Training and Youth Behaviors.

Youth with a mental illness are incarcerated at much higher rates than youth without a psychological diagnosis. Correctional officers serve as a source of daily interaction for these youth and are required to manage juvenile mental health symptoms with minimal training. When staff do not fully understand mental health needs or hold stigmatic perceptions, youth may experience negative consequences. Being aware of officer perceptions of juvenile mental health issues has the potential to improve monitoring and treatment of youth at correctional facilities. This study took place at a Midwestern ju

Cognitive-behavioral treatment for PTSD among people with severe mental illness: a proposed treatment model.

The lifetime prevalence of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is about 8%-14% in the general population, and trauma victimization (51%-98%) and PTSD (up to 42%) are even more prevalent among persons treated within public-sector mental health clinics. Despite this, individuals with PTSD and severe mental illness (SMI) who are treated within the public sector tend to receive inadequate mental health services. In addition, treatments for PTSD for this population remain undeveloped, with virtually no available empirical treatment outcome data to guide clinicians. We propose a model for a compreh

Cerebrospinal fluid levels of phenylacetic acid in mental illness: behavioral associations and response to neuroleptic treatment.

Cerebrospinal fluid levels of phenylacetic acid (CSF PAA) were obtained from normal controls and from drug-free psychiatric inpatients (schizophrenia, major depression, mania, and schizoaffective disorder). Post-treatment CSF PAA levels were obtained from 16 patients after 4 weeks of neuroleptic treatment. Phenylacetic acid levels were higher in women and were significantly correlated with age. There were no differences in CSF PAA levels between the various diagnostic groups and no difference between the paranoid and the nonparanoid subtypes of schizophrenia. CSF PAA was significantly correlat

Using written communication with patient groups to promote behavioral change in chronic mentally ill patients.

Patient-managed problem-solving groups have been used in inpatient settings to increase the responsible activity of patients with chronic mental illness. In a study using a repeated measures design, staff prepared written notes describing patients' adherence to programmatic expectations and submitted them to patient-managed problem-solving groups, which recommended consequences for patients' behavior. The intervention increased the frequency of targeted behavior compared with the frequency of the behavior during baseline periods. The authors suggest that this procedure may be applied to a vari

Prevalence of healthcare-seeking behavior among caregivers for common childhood illness in Ethiopia using PMA 2021-2023 data a multilevel analysis.

Healthcare-seeking behavior refers to the actions taken by caregivers to seek medical care for illness. Globally, the failure to seek timely care for common childhood illnesses particularly diarrhea, fever, and cough remain a major contributor to under-five mortality. Timely health care-seeking behavior of caregivers plays a critical role in reducing preventable deaths. However, evidence on individual- and community-level factors influencing care-seeking remains limited in Ethiopia so this study aims to determine prevalence and factors associated with healthcare-seeking behavior for common chi

Pyridostigmine bromide and stress interact to impact immune function, cholinergic neurochemistry and behavior in a rat model of Gulf War Illness.

Gulf War Illness (GWI) is characterized by a constellation of symptoms that includes cognitive dysfunction. While the causes for GWI remain unknown, prophylactic use of the acetylcholinesterase inhibitor pyridostigmine bromide (PB) in combination with the stress of deployment has been proposed to be among the causes of the cognitive dysfunction in GWI. Mechanistically, clinical studies suggest that altered immune function may be an underlying factor in the neurochemical and neurobehavioral complications of GWI. Accordingly, the goal of this study was to determine how responses to an immune cha

Long-term correlates of childhood abuse among adults with severe mental illness: adult victimization, substance abuse, and HIV sexual risk behavior.

The prevalence of childhood sexual and physical abuse among persons with severe mental illness (SMI) is disproportionately high. Adults with SMI also engage in high rates of HIV risk behaviors. This study examined the association between childhood abuse and adult victimization, substance abuse, and lifetime HIV sexual risk in a sample of 152 adults with SMI receiving community mental health services. Structured interviews assessed psychiatric, psychosocial, and behavioral risk factors. Seventy percent reported childhood physical and/or sexual abuse, and 32% reported both types of abuse. Partic

HIV-risk behavior and the public health context of HIV/AIDS among women living with a severe and persistent mental illness.

We documented HIV-risk behavior and the public health context of AIDS in women living with a severe and persistent mental illness. Sixty-one women were recruited from outpatient clinics and day-treatment programs at a state psychiatric hospital. They completed a survey that included measures of HIV-related risk behavior, the perceived importance of 11 public health and social problems including AIDS, HIV/AIDS-related knowledge, perceived risk, and behavioral intentions. Thirty-eight percent of participants engaged in at least one type of HIV-risk behavior during the 2 months before assessment,

Permethrin exposure primes neuroinflammatory stress response to drive depression-like behavior through microglial activation in a mouse model of Gulf War Illness.

Gulf War Illness (GWI) is a chronic multisymptom disorder that affects approximately 25-32% of Gulf War veterans and is characterized by a number of symptoms such as cognitive impairment, psychiatric disturbances, chronic fatigue and gastrointestinal distress, among others. While the exact etiology of GWI is unknown, it is believed to have been caused by toxic exposures encountered during deployment in combination with other factors such as stress. In the present study we sought to evaluate the hypothesis that exposure to the toxin permethrin could prime neuroinflammatory stress response and e
