Thermosensory predictive coding underpins an illusion of pain.

The human brain has a remarkable ability to learn and update its beliefs about the world. Here, we investigate how thermosensory learning shapes our subjective experience of temperature and the misperception of pain in response to harmless thermal stimuli. Through computational modeling, we demonstrate that the brain uses a probabilistic predictive coding scheme to update beliefs about temperature changes based on their uncertainty. We find that these expectations directly modulate the perception of pain in the thermal grill illusion. Quantitative microstructural brain imaging further revealed

The "Crowd Size Illusion" and the Relativity of Number Perception.

When we investigate busy visual scenes, how do we estimate the number of objects that we see? Most work on number perception answers this question by focusing on properties of the to-be-estimated set of objects-their number, their size, their relative position, and so on. Here, in contrast, we show that perceived number is influenced by extraneous visual information. In six experiments, participants were shown "crowds" of dots that filled "seats" in a visual grid, asking whether the perceived number is influenced not only by the number of occupied seats, but also the number of unoccupied seats

Laparoscopic Acetabular Surgery (LASY) - vision or illusion?

Displaced acetabular fractures usually require open surgical approaches. Aim of this cadaver study was to evaluate a laparoscopic approach to prepare the anterior acetabular column and the quadrilateral plate in analogy to the laparoscopic pelvic lymphadenectomy. The laparoscopic preparation and anatomy is presented and illustrated step by step in a human cadaver followed by a modular plate osteosynthesis of the anterior column involving the quadrilateral plate is performed via a minimally invasive approach using standard laparoscopic instruments. In conclusion we could demonstrate that the la

A Geometrical Account to Explain the Fat-Face Illusion.

Investigations of the "fat-face" illusion have unanimously agreed that the illusion is face-specific. Here, we offer several manipulations to highlight that the fat-face illusion is not restricted to the bottom image, isn't a property of internal features, facial contour/texture, and in general isn't even specific to faces. We propose the axis of horizontal asymmetry account to contextualize fat-face illusion as a geometry-led illusion.

The Effect of Object Compliance on the Velvet Hand Illusion.

Movement of a grid of bars between the two hands creates the tactile illusion of a velvet-like material, namely, the velvet hand illusion (VHI). It was recently proposed that the VHI is caused by a masking effect; bar movement suppresses conscious perception of tactile inputs from the opposing hand. If this hypothesis sufficiently explains the VHI, the physical properties of the opposing hand should not affect the illusion. Another hypothesis suggests that the integration of inputs from the grid of bars and the hands plays a critical role in the VHI. To compare these two hypotheses, the VHI wa

The Scientific Illusion of Victor Burq (1822-1884).

Victor Burq (1822-1884) is closely associated with a therapy named "burquism" by Jean-Martin Charcot, which was used in treating hysteria, especially hysteric anesthesia and paralysis, by applying metals, mainly copper, to affected zones. In 1876, Charcot, Luys, and Dumontpallier, commissioned by the Société de Biologie, issued 2 opinions validating the results obtained by Burq during the 25 years he dedicated to his research. From that point forward, the careers of these 3 famous physicians were lastingly reoriented toward the practice of hypnosis. This neo-mesmeric resurgence at the end of t

Outbreak or illusion: consequences of 'improved' diagnostics for gonorrhoea.

The sexual health service in Oxford introduced gonorrhoea nucleic amplification acid testing using the BD Viper XTR™ System. For practical reasons, a confirmatory nucleic amplification acid testing using a different platform was not used initially. Following the introduction of nucleic amplification acid testing, the rates of gonorrhoea increased threefold. Concerns were raised that this increase represented an outbreak. A retrospective review of cases over six months suggested that there may have been a number of false-positive results. A prospective study was then undertaken over six months,

New York: Guildford Press] cognitive model of social phobia suggests that both public and private sources of information contribute to the construction of the self as a social object, which is thought to maintain the disorder. This study used two concepts developed in social psychology that might help to explain the processes that contribute to the development of this constructed self. T

Inaccurate feedback and performance on the Müller-Lyer illusion.

The effects of accurate and erroneous feedback on magnitude of illusion for the Müller-Lyer illusion were examined. The provision of accurate feedback substantially reduced the magnitude of the Müller-Lyer illusion whereas the influences of inaccurate feedback were dependent upon whether subjects were prompted to overestimate or to underestimate the length of the comparison line.

Wallpaper illusion: cause of disorientation and falls on escalators.

The wallpaper illusion, first described over a century ago, can occur when a person with normal binocular vision views a pattern that is periodic in the horizontal meridian of the visual field. Escalator trends present such a pattern. Evidence is presented favoring the view that disorientation experienced by escalator riders is caused by this illusion. Possibly some of the estimated 60,000 escalator falls occurring in the United States each year are linked to it.

Eye Movement Patterns Under Exposure to Spatial Disorientation Illusions During Simulated Flight.

ObjectiveTo identify eye movement patterns that are correlated with spatial disorientation (SD) events during flights in a flight simulator that induces SD.BackgroundSpatial Disorientation is one of the main causes for aviation mishaps. It can result from illusions caused by misinterpreted vestibular or visual sensory cues, leading to an incorrect perception of an aircraft's position, attitude, or motion. SD prevention is of great importance, as there is currently no objective tool to identify its occurrence.MethodEye movements of 45 participants (30 aircrew members, 15 cadets) were recorded u

McCollough and Watercolor Effects: Visual Illusions that Fade in Early Alzheimer's Disease.

BACKGROUND Visual illusions provide insight into visual perception processes. We examined the McCollough effects (ME) and watercolor effects (WE) in patients with early Alzheimer disease (AD) and cognitively healthy older adults, and evaluated the influence of acetylcholinesterase inhibitors in the AD mild dementia (MD) stage. MATERIAL AND METHODS We included 28, 27, and 26 patients with MD, amnestic mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and normal cognition (control group), respectively. Participants completed the CDR, MMSE, ADAS-Cog 13, Ishihara test, and ME and WE evaluations. ME was evaluated b

The Pareidolia Test: A Simple Neuropsychological Test Measuring Visual Hallucination-Like Illusions.

BACKGROUND: Visual hallucinations are a core clinical feature of dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), and this symptom is important in the differential diagnosis and prediction of treatment response. The pareidolia test is a tool that evokes visual hallucination-like illusions, and these illusions may be a surrogate marker of visual hallucinations in DLB. We created a simplified version of the pareidolia test and examined its validity and reliability to establish the clinical utility of this test. METHODS: The pareidolia test was administered to 52 patients with DLB, 52 patients with Alzheimer's

Hallucinators find meaning in noises: pareidolic illusions in dementia with Lewy bodies.

By definition, visual illusions and hallucinations differ in whether the perceived objects exist in reality. A recent study challenged this dichotomy, in which pareidolias, a type of complex visual illusion involving ambiguous forms being perceived as meaningful objects, are very common and phenomenologically similar to visual hallucinations in dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB). We hypothesise that a common psychological mechanism exists between pareidolias and visual hallucinations in DLB that confers meaning upon meaningless visual information. Furthermore, we believe that these two types of v

The impact of visual illusions on perception, action planning, and motor performance.

The present study extended recent research revealing that illusions can influence performance in golf putting (Witt, Linkenauger, & Proffitt Psychological Science, 23, 397-399, 2012), by exploring the potential mediating roles of attention and action planning. Glover and Dixon's (Journal of Experimental Psychology. Human Perception and Performance, 27, 560-572, 2001) planning-control model suggests that both perceptual and movement-planning processes are prone to illusion-based bias. We therefore predicted that both the perception of target size and a measure of attentional control related to

Age-related susceptibility to the Müller-Lyer and the horizontal-vertical illusions.

Participants between the ages of 3 and 20 years adjusted the Müller-Lyer illusion and the inverted-T form of the Horizontal-Vertical illusion. Perceptual error was quantified using signal detection and nonparametric measures of sensitivity and responsivity. Significant changes in sensitivity and responsivity were found for each illusion across participants' ages. No effect of sex of participant was found. Sensitivity and responsivity were largely asymptotic between the ages of 13 to 15 years for the Müller-Lyer illusion and between the ages of 11 to 15 years for the Horizontal-Vertical illusio

Susceptibility to illusions and performance on visuospatial tasks in individuals with autism.

The current study follows a recent paper reporting that individuals with autism were just as susceptible to visual illusions as those without autism (Ropar & Mitchell, 1999). The possibility that individual differences may account for the failure to replicate Happe's (1996) findings is explored by presenting a battery of visuospatial tasks thought to measure weak central coherence (embedded figures, block design, Rey complex figure test). Participants with autism were distinguished by relatively good performance on visuospatial tasks, though there was no superiority effect in those with Asperg

[Thoracic pseudo-lesions induced by inadequate methodology, optical illusions, and anatomical variations].

False-positive or over-calling of findings at chest radiography may have important consequences by generating numerous and unnecessary examinations. The advances made in thoracic imaging have currently decreased the number of technical errors. However, we are frequently confronted with visual illusions or with failure to recognize anatomical variants, either congenital, age-related or physiological in nature. Other difficulties are due to functional variations. Over-calling depends on the clinical context, which may inadequately suggest an interstitial lung process, abnormalities of the vascul
