Imitation of complex whole-body sequence in profoundly hearing-impaired adolescents.

Many studies have identified specific visual advantages in deaf individuals. However, few studies have linked these advantages to motor learning. This study aimed to compare the differences in movement and learning processes between profoundly hearing-impaired (HI) and normal-hearing (NH) adolescents by capturing motions that imitate complex whole-body sequences. To analyze multiple parameters simultaneously in a time series and evaluate their similarity to the reference, we used a deep-learning strategy with an autoencoder for anomaly detection. In this study, anomaly detection indicated the

Construction of a Pig Alveolar Cleft Model in Imitation of Cleft Lip and Palate Congenital Deformity.

Alveolar cleft repair is a key step in multiple disciplinary treatment for patients with cleft lip/and palate. Although autologous bone grafting has been used worldwide over the past half century, alternative advanced techniques, such as the use of bone substitutes and guided tissue regeneration, have shown their great potentials and have been recommended by a growing number of physicians and surgeons. The employment of new therapeutic approaches and devices in clinical routine requires tremendous experimental efforts and appropriate animal models with similar sizes and sites of deformity to t

Vocal imitations and production learning by Australian musk ducks (Biziura lobata).

Acquiring vocalizations by learning them from other individuals is only known from a limited number of animal groups. For birds, oscine and some suboscine songbirds, parrots and hummingbirds demonstrate this ability. Here, we provide evidence for vocal learning in a member of a basal clade of the avian phylogeny: the Australian musk duck (Biziura lobata). A hand-reared individual imitated a slamming door and a human voice, and a female-reared individual imitated Pacific black duck quacks. These sounds have been described before, but were never analysed in any detail and went so far unnoticed b

100 years after Liepmann-Lesion correlates of diminished selection and application of familiar versus novel tools.

100 years ago, Liepmann highlighted the role of left ventro-dorsal lesions for impairments in conceptual (rather ventral) and motor (more dorsal) related aspects of apraxia. Many studies thereafter attributed to an extended left fronto-temporo-parietal network. Yet, to date there are only few studies that looked at apraxic performance in the selection and application of familiar versus novel tools. In the current study we applied modern voxel-based lesion-symptom mapping (VLSM) to analyze neural correlates of impaired selection and application of familiar versus novel tools. 58 left (LBD) and

Activating the motor system through action observation: is this an efficient approach in adults and children?

Observing an action performed by another person to learn a new movement is a frequent experience in adult daily life, such as in sports. However, it is an especially common circumstance during the development of motor skills in childhood. Studies on healthy humans indicate that action observation induces a facilitation in the observer's motor system. This effect is supported by an action-perception matching mechanism available both in adults and in children. Because of the simplicity of action observation, it has been proposed to apply this method in clinical contexts. After a brief, non-exhau

[An example of rehabilitation of speech by mediation-techniques in aphasia].

In a case of severe aphasia it was attempted to use a mediation technique. During several months there was no improvement in speech by using the usual techniques. The patient had to learn several gestures that corresponded to different letters. This technique result in a considerable speech improvement. It is discussed which mechanisms are possibly involved in the rehabilitation process; the practical importance of the mediation technique is suggested.

Palpatory apraxia.

A case of 'palpatory' apraxia is reported. The apraxia was characterized by clumsiness of the left hand in the manipulation of objects with preservation of power and finger motility in visual imitation. From the analysis of the patient's behavior and associated sensory findings, a defect of a higher-order sensory system was speculated as a basis of clumsiness.

The effects of imitative vs. Cognitive methods on the speech development of children with autism.

OBJECTIVE: The present study was performed to examine the effects of two speech therapy methods on six verbal behaviors of autistic children, including oral speech, listening, organizing, speaking, semantics, and syntax. MATERIALS & METHODS: IN THIS STUDY, THIRTY CHILDREN WITH AUTISM WERE ASSIGNED TO ONE OF TWO GROUPS: imitative and cognitive groups. Before starting the main procedures of the study, the children of both groups were homogenized concerning their autism level. In the first phase of the study, the speech development level of the two groups was measured in a pre-test, in which bot

Modelling affect in terms of speech parameters.

It is well known that the human voice contains important information about the affective state of a speaker at a nonverbal level. Accordingly, we started an extensive investigation which aims at modelling intraindividual changes of the global affective state over time, as this state is reflected by the human voice, and can be inferred from measurable speech parameters. For the purpose of this investigation, a speech-recording procedure was designed which is especially suited to reveal intraindividual changes of voice patterns over time since each person serves as his or her own reference. On t

Sex of model and sex of subject in reduction of snake avoidance.

The effects of sex of experimenter on approach to a snake were assessed in both modeling and non-modeling conditions. Subjects were selected on the basis of a pretest in which they indicated that they would never pick up a harmless snake depicted on one of eight color slides of animals. 72 subjects (36 males and 36 females) served in one of 8 groups (4 groups of males and 4 groups of females). Each group of 9 subjects served in one of the following conditions: (a) a non-modeling condition with the same sex experimenter, (b) a non-modeling condition with an opposite sex experimenter, (c) a mode

Brief Report: Telehealth Music-Enhanced Reciprocal Imitation Training in Autism: A Single-Subject Feasibility Study of a Virtual Parent Coaching Intervention.

PURPOSE: Telehealth delivery increases accessibility of parent-mediated interventions that teach parents skills and support autistic children's social communication. Reciprocal Imitation Training (RIT), an evidence-based Naturalistic Developmental Behavioral Intervention (NDBI) focused on imitation skills, a common difficulty in autism, holds promise for telehealth-based parent training. Imitation is also a core component of musical play during childhood and the affordances of musical play/song naturally shape parent-child interactions. We evaluate the feasibility of a music-based, telehealth

The mirror neuron system compensates for amygdala dysfunction - associated social deficits in individuals with higher autistic traits.

The amygdala is a core node in the social brain which exhibits structural and functional abnormalities in Autism spectrum disorder and there is evidence that the mirror neuron system (MNS) can functionally compensate for impaired emotion processing following amygdala lesions. In the current study, we employed an fMRI paradigm in 241 subjects investigating MNS and amygdala responses to observation, imagination and imitation of dynamic facial expressions and whether these differed in individuals with higher (n = 77) as opposed to lower (n = 79) autistic traits. Results indicated that individuals

Increasing Access to an ASD Imitation Intervention Via a Telehealth Parent Training Program.

Systematic research focused on developing and improving strategies for the dissemination and implementation of effective ASD services is essential. An innovative and promising area of research is the use of telehealth programs to train parents of children with ASD in intervention techniques. A hybrid telehealth program, combining self-directed internet-based instruction with remote coaching, was created to introduce parents of children with ASD to an imitation intervention. A single-subject multiple-baseline design study evaluated the effect of the program on changes in parent and child behavi

College students' perceptions of individuals with anorexia nervosa: irritation and admiration.

BACKGROUND: Stigmatizing attitudes against anorexia nervosa (AN) may act as barriers to treatment. AIMS: Evaluated college students' perceptions of AN as compared to major depressive disorder (MDD). METHOD: One-hundred two female undergraduates read vignettes describing targets with mild or severe MDD or AN, then rated biological, vanity, and self-responsibility attributions; feelings of admiration, sympathy, and anger; and behavioral dispositions toward coercion into treatment, imitation, and social distance. RESULTS: AN was perceived more negatively than MDD in terms of vanity attribution

[Therapy of speech development delay in mentally retarded children].

Twenty-one mentally retarded children participated in 40 language training sessions each that were based on behavior therapy. The training program had four levels of difficulty. The appropriate level for a given child was determined by evaluation of the child's spontaneous speech. Of the 21 children, 8 started with a 6-week waiting period. During this time they had 40 sessions of occupational therapy. The effect of the waiting period and of therapy on the children's speech was assessed by analysis of spontaneous verbal utterances and by specially constructed imitation tests. The children were

Media violence.

Research on the effects of media violence is not well understood by the general public. Despite this fact, there is an overwhelming consensus in the scientific literature about the unhealthy effects of media violence. Meta-analyses show that media-violence viewing consistently is associated with higher levels of antisocial behavior, ranging from the trivial (imitative violence directed against toys) to the serious (criminal violence), with many consequential outcomes in between (acceptance of violence as a solution to problems, increased feelings of hostility, and the apparent delivery of pain

Humanoid Robot Walking and Grasping Method Using Similarity Reward-Augmented Generative Adversarial Imitation Learning.

This study aims to enhance the precision of humanoid robots in imitating complex human "walking-grasping" coordinated movements. Addressing limitations in sample efficiency and reward function design in Generative Adversarial Imitation Learning (GAIL), we propose the Similarity Reward-Augmented Generative Adversarial Imitation Learning (SRA-GAIL) framework. The method integrates plantar thin-film resistive pressure sensors to measure the real-time pressure distribution at four key points on both feet, combined with roll/pitch angle data acquired from JY901S inertial measurement units (IMUs). Evolutionary game theory and social learning can determine how vaccine scares unfold.

Immunization programs have often been impeded by vaccine scares, as evidenced by the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) autism vaccine scare in Britain. A "free rider" effect may be partly responsible: vaccine-generated herd immunity can reduce disease incidence to such low levels that real or imagined vaccine risks appear large in comparison, causing individuals to cease vaccinating. This implies a feedback loop between disease prevalence and strategic individual vaccinating behavior. Here, we analyze a model based on evolutionary game theory that captures this feedback in the context of vaccine sca
