Psychology of addictive behaviors : journal of the Society of Psychologists in Addictive Behaviors2006eng
Recent research has suggested that trait impulsivity may predict sexual risk behavior. Few studies have examined this association directly in substance users at risk for HIV transmission. Participants were 330 primarily heroin and/or cocaine users who underwent a structured interview regarding their drug use, sexual behaviors, and impulsivity. Results from an iteratively reweighted least squares regression analysis indicate that impulsivity remained a statistically significant predictor of sexual risk after adjusting for the effects of demographic variables and substance use frequency (b=.179,

To date, few studies have examined the personality characteristics and clinical predictors of impulsive behaviors in eating disorders (ED). The aim of this work was to study the prevalence of a wide range of impulsive behaviors in a sample of 554 ED subjects and to examine the predictors of these behaviors. Subjects were diagnosed according to DSM-IV criteria as having anorexia nervosa restricting type (ANR; n = 183), anorexia nervosa binge eating/purging type (ANBP; n = 65), bulimia nervosa purging type (BNP; n = 244), and bulimia nervosa nonpurging type (BNNP; n = 62). Nine different types o

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between laboratory behavioral measured impulsivity (using the Immediate and Delayed Memory Tasks) and suicidal attempt histories. Three groups of adults were recruited, those with either: no previous suicide attempts (Control, n = 20), only a single suicide attempt (Single, n = 20), or multiple suicidal attempts (Multiple, n = 10). As hypothesized, impulsive responses increased with the number of suicide attempts (Control < Single < Multiple). This study helps to demonstrate how laboratory behavioral measures of impulsivity can be used

Aggression has been previously correlated with impulsive personality. In the present study, Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS) scores of 40 male controls aged 15-40 years were related to the frequency of free-operant aggressive and escape responses toward a fictitious antagonist. Participants earned "points" worth money with repeated button presses on a fixed-ratio schedule and were provoked by the periodic subtraction of a point. These subtractions were blamed on the behavior of a (fictitious) other participant, and aggressive responses (presses of a separate button) were defined as those emit

Results of past research suggest that the existence of bulimic behaviors (binge eating and/or purging) may be an indicator of increased likelihood of substance use. We investigated incidence of substance use among adolescent girls (mean age = 15.4 years) with anorexia nervosa (n = 59) or bulimia nervosa (n = 58). The incidence of substance use among girls with anorexia nervosa was low, particularly after removing those anorexic adolescents with bulimic symptoms. Nearly one-third of girls with bulimia nervosa had smoked tobacco cigarettes, had used marijuana, and were drinking alcohol at least

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Impulsive behavior has been repeatedly identified as a major problem in schizophrenia. Our objective was to examine the possible demographical and clinical correlates for impulsive behavior in patients with schizophrenia.
METHODS: Fifty-eight patients with schizophrenia and Seventy-seven healthy controls were recruited. Sociodemographic data were collected and they were subjected to the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS), Positive and Negative Syndrome scale (PANSS), and Trauma Assessment for Adults-Brief Revised Version (TAA).
RESULTS: Correlations between impulsiv

Multiple theories have been proposed for sensation seeking and vulnerability to impulse-control disorders [Zuckerman M, Kuhlman DM (2000) Personality and risk-taking: Common biosocial factors. J Pers 68:999-1029], and many of these rely on a dopamine system deficit. Available animal models reproduce only some behavioral symptoms and seem devoid of construct validity. We used lentivirus tools for over-expressing or silencing the dopamine transporter (DAT) and we evaluated the resulting behavioral profiles in terms of motivation and self-control. Wistar adult rats received stereotaxic inoculatio

Impulsivity, often defined as the propensity to act hastily without thoroughly weighing the consequences, is a recognized contributor to antisocial behavior. However, the mechanisms that might mitigate the influence of impulsivity on antisocial tendencies remain unclear. Across two studies, we tested the proposition that self-control moderates this relationship, such that high levels of self-control diminish the connection between impulsivity and antisocial behavior. Study 1, a cross-sectional analysis with 225 professional basketball players, and Study 2, a six-month longitudinal study with 3

Impulsivity is consistently linked to various problematic behaviors, including aggression, substance abuse, pathological gambling, risky driving, and numerous psychopathological disorders such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and personality disorders. This study aims to investigate the relationship between self-reported impulsivity, measured by the Behavioral Inhibition/Behavioral Activation Scales, and emotional states (pleasant, unpleasant, or neutral), in the context of time estimation deviations. A time estimation task was administered to 129 adult participants (88 females) fro

OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to analyze the association between criminal behavior and impulsivity in individuals with drug addiction and investigate whether impulsiveness mediates the relationship between drug use severity and legal problems.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 773 men diagnosed with addiction (295 alcohol users and 478 users of crack/polysubstance) while undergoing addiction treatment. The BIS-11 and ASI-6 were applied to assess impulsivity, criminal behavior, and drug use.
RESULTS: The prevalence of criminal behavior was 41.7% (n = 123) in alcohol users and 64.9% (n = 3

OBJECTIVES: To assess the frequency of impulse control disorders (ICDs) in patients with restless legs syndrome (RLS) with and without augmentation under dopaminergic therapy in a case-control study. Augmentation and ICDs are both serious complications of dopaminergic treatment of RLS but little is known about possible associations between these drug-induced disorders.
METHODS: In total, 58 patients with idiopathic RLS diagnosed according to the International Restless Legs Syndrome Study Group criteria were recruited. Of these, 35 patients had augmentation. The frequency of ICD symptoms was a

Current approaches in Dutch mental health care institutions towards inpatients' aggression have focused predominantly on environmental factors, such as training the staff in aggression management. However, personality traits might be an important factor in patients' aggression - as shown by incidents in the wards. This study explores the influence of dysfunctional impulsivity and alexithymia on psychiatric patients' aggressive behavior, through self-reports and through involvement in aggressive incidents. Personality traits influencing patients' aggression emphasize the importance of a more di

The human impulsivity-related trait has a complex background that is influenced by genetic and non-genetic factors. Impulsivity-related genetic factors have been evaluated in the field of psychiatry previously. Many previous reports have suggested that genetic variants associated with the hyperstimulation of the dopaminergic and serotonergic systems may have main roles in impulsivity. Although impulse control and related behaviors (ICRBs) in Parkinson's disease (PD) are now recognized as important nonmotor symptoms, ICRBs has seldom been evaluated for its genetic susceptibility in PD. This rev

Suicide is a leading cause of death worldwide, among the top 10 causes of death in every country, and one of the three leading causes of death for people aged 15 to 34 years. It has been increasingly recognized in recent years that people who attempt or commit suicide have a certain individual predisposition, part of which is given by personality traits, and in particular, impulsive-aggressive behaviors. This article reviews evidence suggesting that impulsive-aggressive traits are part of a developmental cascade that increases suicide risk among a subset of suicides. These personality traits,

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: A range of impulse control and repetitive behaviors presumed to be related to dopaminergic medications has been recognized in Parkinson's disease. These behaviors are linked by their incentive or reward-based and repetitive natures and overlap with addictions. The behaviors include pathological gambling, hypersexuality, compulsive shopping, and compulsive eating and are related to punding and compulsive medication use. In patients on dopamine agonists, these behaviors as a group are relatively common, can have potentially devastating psychosocial consequences and are commonl

Although impulsive behavioral patterns are often described by patients with bulimia nervosa, there has been little formal evaluation of the relationship between impulsivity and eating-related symptomatology in this disorder. In this controlled outpatient study, ratings on the Barratt Impulsivity Scale were significantly elevated in 20 women with bulimia nervosa in comparison to 20 healthy female volunteers. Frequency of binge eating episodes was not significantly correlated with impulsivity ratings. Although these results indicate increased prevalence of impulsive behavioral style in patients

BACKGROUND: Suicide is one of the leading causes of death for military personnel and Veterans. Neuroimaging studies have revealed abnormalities in white matter tracts and brain connectivity in suicide behavior (SB); however, reports of alterations in white matter volume and its association with related behaviors are limited. The current study examined the relationship between cingulate white matter volume (WMV), impulsivity, and SB in Veterans.
METHODS: Fifty-two Veterans, ages 18 to 65, underwent magnetic resonance imaging on a 3T Siemens Verio scanner. Morphometric analysis of brain images

Administration of methylphenidate (MPH, Ritalin) to children affected by attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is an elective therapy, which however raises concerns for public health, due to possible persistent neuro-behavioral alterations. We investigated potential long-term consequences at adulthood of MPH exposure during adolescence, by means of behavioral and brain MRS assessment in drug-free state. Wistar adolescent rats (30- to 44-day-old) were treated with MPH (0 or 2 mg/kg once/day for 14 days) and then left undisturbed until adulthood. Levels of impulsive behavior were asses

OBJECTIVE: Although aggression in children and adolescents remains a leading cause of seeking mental health services, the nosology of aggression remains underdeveloped. Prior work characterized youth with aggression by using secondary analyses of large research protocol-based data sets, which revealed a profile characterized by high levels of aggression impulsive/reactive (AIR) and symptoms of hyperactivity/impulsivity. The goal of this study was to evaluate whether the AIR profile was present in a clinical sample using similar methodology with novel dimensional measures of AIR.
