Out and down: incarceration and psychiatric disorders.

Psychiatric disorders are unusually prevalent among current and former inmates, but it is not known what this relationship reflects. A putative causal relationship is contaminated by assorted influences, including childhood disadvantage, the early onset of most disorders, and the criminalization of substance use. Using the National Comorbidity Survey Replication (N = 5692), we examine the relationship between incarceration and psychiatric disorders after statistically adjusting for multidimensional influences. The results indicate that (1) some of the most common disorders found among former i

Beyond absenteeism: father incarceration and child development.

High rates of incarceration among American men, coupled with high rates of fatherhood among men in prison, have motivated recent research on the effects of parental imprisonment on children's development. We use data from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study to examine the relationship between paternal incarceration and developmental outcomes for approximately 3,000 urban children. We estimate cross-sectional and longitudinal regression models that control not only for fathers' basic demographic characteristics and a rich set of potential confounders, but also for several measures of

In utero incarceration of congenital diaphragmatic hernia.

In utero diagnosis of incarcerated congenital diaphragmatic hernia has never been reported. In our case, congenital diaphragmatic hernia presented at 34 weeks of gestation with dilated bowel loops, pleural effusion, and ascites on fetal ultrasound. Preterm delivery and emergency exploration revealed a tight posterolateral diaphragmatic defect with extensive bowel infarction.

[Bochdalek hernia with gastric incarceration and volvulus].

Bochdalek's hernia is infrequent in adults. We communicate the case of a 22 year old male that was admitted at hospital because of a thoracic pain of sudden onset. In the exploration there was pain in left hypochondrium non tolerating decubitus. Thorax radiology showed an "arched" image in left pulmonary base and pleural shedding. The patient underwent a surgical procedure in which a great gastric herniation was found, which forced a total gastrectomy.

Ureteral incarceration in the symptomatology of hydronephrosis.

Renal colic symptoms may be caused by an aberrant vascular bundle that intermittently incarcerates the pyeloureteral junction. The authors describe 6 patients who were complaint free except for the period of fits and routine urological examinations showed normal findings. The patients had no subjective complaints after open surgery.

Prior incarceration length and edentulism among formerly incarcerated older adults in the United States.

BACKGROUND: This study investigated the association between prior incarceration length and edentulism among US adults 55 years and older. Analyses explored indirect factors such as wealth, smoking status, mental health, and chronic health conditions that may explain this relationship. In addition, the study analyzed how associations between incarceration and edentulism vary by race and ethnicity. METHODS: The authors used data from the 2012-2014 Health and Retirement Study (unweighted N = 11,630; weighted N = 72,872,877) to assess the relationship between incarceration duration and edentulism

Cancer incidence among incarcerated and formerly incarcerated individuals: A statewide retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Cancer incidence among individuals with incarceration exposure has been rarely studied due to the absence of linked datasets. This study examined cancer incidence during incarceration and postincarceration compared to the general population using a statewide linked cohort. METHODS: We constructed a retrospective cohort from a linkage of state tumor registry and correctional system data for Connecticut residents from 2005 to 2016, and identified cancers diagnosed during and within 12 months postincarceration. We estimated incidence rates (including for screen-detectable cancers) an

Pre-exposure prophylaxis implementation during incarceration: Perspectives of formerly incarcerated men and women.

The HIV prevalence is higher among individuals involved in the United States (U.S.) correctional system than those in general population. Despite this, people in prisons or other closed settings have poor access to the most effective biomedical prevention tool, HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). The purpose of this study was to explore the attitudes and beliefs of PrEP initiation in correctional facilities amongst individuals formerly in prisons or other closed settings. We conducted 13 in-depth qualitative interviews with recently released (from incarceration) clients participating in a for

Perception of Procedural Justice Amongst Previously Incarcerated Youth: Procedural Justice in Incarcerated Youth.

Violence among incarcerated youths is a serious public health issue and an area of marked health disparities. Procedural Justice is an ethical framework to guide policy approaches in the criminal justice system. The purpose of our study was to evaluate youth perception of neutrality, respect, trust, and voice while incarcerated. Young people ages 14 to 21 previously incarcerated in a juvenile detention facility were interviewed regarding their perceptions of procedural justice. Participants were recruited from community-based organizations. Interviews were semi-structured, lasting for 1 hr. In

Disparities in cancer prevalence, incidence, and mortality for incarcerated and formerly incarcerated patients: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Racial and ethnic minority status, structural racism, low educational attainment, and poverty are consistently associated with cancer disparities and with higher rates of incarceration. The objective of this scoping review is to conduct a qualitative synthesis of the literature on cancer prevalence, incidence, mortality, and disparities in these outcomes for incarcerated and formerly incarcerated patients, as this literature is fragmented and heterogenous. METHODS: This scoping review included Bureau of Justice Statistics reports and searched PubMed in May 2021 for all English lan

Return to illicit drug use post-incarceration among formerly incarcerated Black Americans.

AIMS: The number of drug dependent individuals incarcerated in the U.S. is exceptionally high, and reportedly 60 percent of incarcerated Black Americans have a substance abuse disorder. The purpose of this study was to identify factors associated with return to illicit drug use post-incarceration. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 121 formerly incarcerated Black Americans in New York City to examine predictors of return to illicit drug use. Kaplan-Meier curves were generated on the outcome of time-to-drug use for various predictors and compared using the log-rank test. Cox p

Maternal Wealth Implications of Child Incarceration: Examining the Upstream Consequences of Children's Incarceration for Women's Assets, Homeownership, and Home Equity.

Qualitative research has documented mothers' critical role in supporting adult children during and after incarceration. Yet, the implications of incarceration for mothers have been relatively unexplored. Wealth research has also largely overlooked the influence of adult children on parental wealth. Using linked mother-child data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1979 (NLSY79) and the NLSY79 Child and Young Adult study, we investigate whether a child's incarceration influences mothers' wealth and whether accounting for child incarceration history helps explain the racial wealth gap

The Hidden Toll of Incarceration: Exploring the Link Between Incarceration Histories and Pain Among Older Adults in the United States.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Incarceration is linked to poor health outcomes across the life course. However, little is known whether and to what extent incarceration histories shape pain in later life. This study examines the relationships between incarceration histories and pain outcomes among middle-aged and older adults in the United States. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Data from a nationally representative sample of community-dwelling adults aged 51 and over in the 2012-2018 biennial waves of the U.S. Health and Retirement Study was analyzed to examine how incarceration histories influence

Women, incarceration and HIV: a systematic review of HIV treatment access, continuity of care and health outcomes across incarceration trajectories.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to systematically review the literature on gendered implications of incarceration for HIV outcomes and engagement in care for women living with HIV (WLWH). DESIGN: We systematically searched seven bibliographic databases, for peer-reviewed English-language studies, published between 2007 and 2017 reporting on incarceration, women (transgender inclusive) and HIV. METHODS: Articles were included for evaluation if they reported outcomes for at least one of three measures of interest: viral load, antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence or engagement in care am

Mass incarceration and public health: the association between black jail incarceration and adverse birth outcomes among black women in Louisiana.

BACKGROUND: A growing body of evidence is beginning to highlight how mass incarceration shapes inequalities in population health. Non-Hispanic blacks are disproportionately affected by incarceration and criminal law enforcement, an enduring legacy of a racially-biased criminal justice system with broad health implications for black families and communities. Louisiana has consistently maintained one of the highest rates of black incarceration in the nation. Concurrently, large racial disparities in population health persist. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of all births among
