DNA analysis of dental pulp to link incinerated remains of homicide victim to crime scene.

Teeth endure postmortem degradation and extreme changes in ambient temperature and pressure better than most human tissues. This ability to resist deterioration allows the teeth to be studied as a method of establishing the identity of a decedent. Additionally, dental hard tissues, and in some instances soft tissues, may provide investigators with other sources of forensic data. In this case, a female homicide victim was transported to a location where her remains were burned. The high temperatures of a gasoline fire effectively incinerated the body precluding deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) analy

Leaching Kinetics of Heavy Metals from Municipal Solid Waste Incineration Fly Ash: A Langmuir-Based Model.

Langmuir kinetics are widely used to describe adsorption processes. In this study, a novel leaching kinetic model based on Langmuir kinetics was developed to simulate the dynamic leaching behavior of heavy metals from fly ash. The initial conditions and equilibrium concentrations of the Langmuir-based model differ fundamentally between adsorption and leaching. The proposed model can be simplified to the conventional pseudo-first-order model under two limiting conditions but cannot be reduced to the pseudo-second-order model. Leaching experiments were conducted on two fly ash samples with Zn, P

Hydrothermal treatment of typical combustion and incineration residues: State-of-the-art technologies and future perspectives.

Coal combustion and waste incineration processes generate massive solid residues, posing severe environmental risks and resource waste. Effective valorization of typical combustion and incineration residues, including coal fly ash (CFA), coal bottom ash (CBA), municipal solid waste incineration bottom ash (IBA), and incineration fly ash (IFA), is crucial for achieving circular economy goals and environmental sustainability. As a mild and efficient thermochemical technology, hydrothermal (HT) treatment improves the reactivity of solid residues and enables synthesis of high-value functional prod

Temperature-dependent partitioning of 1,4-dioxane between atmospheric emissions and landfill leachate at waste incineration facilities.

Highly reactive lime powder (HRLP) containing diethylene glycol (DEG) as a hydration retarder is widely used in bag-filter air pollution control units at municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) facilities in Japan. Under the acidic, elevated-temperature conditions of the bag-filter (∼170 °C, H2SO4/HCl atmosphere), residual DEG undergoes acid-catalyzed cyclodehydration to produce 1,4-dioxane, a Group 2B carcinogen fully miscible with water and persistent in the environment. Using laboratory-simulated bag-filter conditions, this study quantifies both pathways for 1,4-dioxane from DEG-containin

Efficient vitrification of hazardous waste incineration fly ash and slag via the CaO-SiO2-Fe2O3 system.

Landfilling hazardous waste presents substantial environmental risks, necessitating the development of reliable and sustainable disposal technologies. This study explores a novel co-vitrification strategy for hazardous waste incineration fly ash (HWFA), slag (HWS), and iron-rich slag (IRS) by utilizing the CaO-SiO2-Fe2O3 ternary system. Theoretical analysis indicates that optimizing the ternary component ratios can achieve a minimum eutectic temperature of 1192 °C, significantly reducing the liquidus temperature compared to individual HWFA, HWS, and IRS raw materials. Systematic experimental v

Characterization and comparison of gasification and incineration fly ashes generated from municipal solid waste in Singapore.

Slagging-gasification has received increasing attention as a municipal solid waste treatment technology. Compared with incineration, slagging-gasification can produce valuable syngas and generates by-products that can be easier reusable in different applications in some cases. Among these by-products, the gasification fly ash (GFA) is the only hazardous solid residue to be landfilled. To explore its potential recycling methods and maximize its recycling efficiency, the detailed physicochemical properties of GFA are crucial. This study conducted a comprehensive characterization of six GFA sampl

Fate of heavy metals during molten salts thermal treatment of municipal solid waste incineration fly ashes.

Thermal treatment could effectively realize the detoxification of heavy metals in municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ash through the approach of removal or stabilization process. To lower the operating temperature and suppress the evaporation of heavy metals, a molten salts (NaCl-CaCl2) thermal treatment method was proposed for the detoxification of heavy metals from MSWI fly ash at a relatively mild condition (600/800 °C). The fate of heavy metals during the heating process and their stabilization properties in the remained ash slag after molten salts thermal treatment were investi

The effects of accelerated carbonation on CO(2) uptake and metal release from incineration APC residues.

This work presents the results of a study on accelerated carbonation of incinerator air pollution control residues, with a particular focus on the modifications in the leaching behaviour of the ash. Aqueous carbonation experiments were carried out using 100% CO(2) at different temperatures, pressures and liquid-to-solid ratios, in order to assess their influence on process kinetics, CO(2) uptake and the leaching behaviour of major and trace elements. The ash showed a particularly high reactivity towards CO(2), owing to the abundance of calcium hydroxides phases, with a maximum CO(2) uptake of

Evolution of occupational health risks among waste incinerator workers: A four-decade review.

This review synthesizes four decades of global research (1980 to 2025) on occupational health risks among workers in municipal, medical, and hazardous waste incineration facilities. It examines how evolving technologies, waste streams, and regulations have shaped exposure patterns and health outcomes. Early studies reported high exposures to dioxins and heavy metals, linked to respiratory illness, skin conditions, and potential cancer risks. While modern emission controls have substantially lowered exposures, especially in high-income countries, residual risks to the respiratory, cardiovascula

Operating parameters optimization and efficient NO reduction of SNCR process in a municipal solid waste incinerator.

In this study, the NO reduction process in the Selective non-catalytic reduction (SNCR) system of a waste incinerator was analyzed by numerical simulation, and the effects of droplet size (120 to 200 μm), velocity (34 to 50 m/s), and atomization angle (30° to 50°) on the NO removal efficiency of SNCR were studied. The three parameters investigated showed an influence on the NO removal efficiency of the SNCR system. A maximum of NO removal efficiency with a corresponding minimum of NH3 slip could always be found by modifying the three parameters within the ranges investigated. The highest NO re

Human biomonitoring of metals in workers at the waste-to-energy incinerator of Turin: An Italian longitudinal study.

Evidence of negative health effects of solid waste management is uncertain. Available reviews suggests the use of biomarkers in human biomonitoring (HBM) to detect low exposure levels. In September 2013, a waste-to-energy plant located in the Turin (Italy) went into operation. The SPoTT (acronym for Population health Surveillance in the Turin incinerator's area) monitoring program was set up to assess the potential health impact caused by the plant. The paper illustrates the results of HBM of metals in the workers before the plant went into operation and then at 1 year and 3 years. This study

Maternal residence near municipal waste incinerators and the risk of urinary tract birth defects.

OBJECTIVES: Waste incineration releases a mixture of chemicals with high embryotoxic potential, including heavy metals and dioxins/furans, into the atmosphere. In a previous ecological study we found an association between the risk of urinary tract birth defects and residence in the vicinity of municipal solid waste incinerators (MSWIs). The objective of the present study was to specifically test this association. METHODS: A population-based case-control study compared 304 infants with urinary tract birth defects diagnosed in the Rhône-Alpes region (2001-2003) with a random sample of 226 popu

Volatility of heavy metals during incineration of tannery sludge in the presence of chlorides and phosphoric acid.

Knowledge of the behaviour of heavy metals in the combustion process is a most important factor in selecting disposal alternatives for waste materials. Accordingly, in this work, the vaporization behaviour of highly concentrated heavy metals (Pb, Zn, Cu and Cr) in tannery sludge were investigated experimentally. The sludge was spiked with various chlorine compounds (i.e. PVC, FeCl3, CaCl2 and NaCl) and pre-treated with phosphoric acid in order to evaluate the capacity of enhancement and weakening of the volatility of the heavy metals contained in tannery sludge. The experimental results show t

Characterization of air pollution control residues produced in a municipal solid waste incinerator in Portugal.

This study is mainly related with the physical and chemical characterization of a solid waste, produced in a municipal solid waste (MSW) incineration process, which is usually referred as air pollution control (APC) residue. The moisture content, loss on ignition (LOI), particle size distribution, density, porosity, specific surface area and morphology were the physical properties addressed here. At the chemical level, total elemental content (TC), total availability (TA) and the leaching behaviour with compliance tests were determined, as well as the acid neutralization capacity (ANC). The ma

Incinerator fly ash provokes alteration of redox equilibrium and liberation of arachidonic acid in vitro.

Numerous epidemiological studies have associated exposure to ambient particulate matter (PM) with pulmonary and cardiovascular health effects. Macrophages as a part of the primary pulmonary defence system play a crucial role by generating pro- and anti-inflammatory mediators. The aim of the present study was to examine the effect of incinerator fly ash (MAF02) as a model of environmental particulate matter on the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and their ability to induce oxidative stress in RAW264.7 macrophages. Furthermore, the liberation of arachidonic acid (AA) was observed. The

Solidification and recycling of incinerator bottom ash through the addition of colloidal silica (SiO2) solution.

The possibility of using incinerator bottom ash as a substitute for natural aggregates was investigated. Rough, porous surface of bottom ash, which diminishes the strength of solidified products, was improved by colloidal silica solution. As a result, a significant increase of mechanical strength was accomplished by a slight amount of silica (<1 wt% to total). Moreover, pozzolanic reaction was induced in initial cement hydration due to the nano-particle size of about 20 nm in colloidal silica solution. Cylindrical specimens and bricks were prepared from bottom ash added to a colloidal silica (

Behaviour of metals under the conditions of roasting MSW incinerator fly ash with chlorinating agents.

A total elemental analysis was performed on a municipal solid waste (MSW) fly ash sample, before and after it was treated at 1000 degrees C, to reveal the metal distribution between the volatile matter and the ash residue. Metals such as Pb, Zn, Cd, and to a lesser degree, Cr, Mn and Ni, were volatilized. Addition of chlorinating agents generally increased the volatility of certain elements. More acid resistant compounds were formed in the ash residue after the heat treatment using CaCl2 as a chlorinating agent. The efficiencies of volatilization of the metals, using Cl2 as a chlorinating agen
