OBJECTIVE: This study was designed to address the need for more detailed information about Indigenous homeless youth, a group overrepresented in the homeless population, using a national-level data set.
STUDY DESIGN: The study used a cross-sectional, self-report survey design.
METHODS: Surveys were used to gather demographic, mental health, and quality of life data from a sample of 1103 Canadian youth accessing homeless services with data collected in 2015. This article focused on the 332 Indigenous respondents, using both comparisons with non-Indigenous youth and within-group comparisons ac

Despite studies documenting the evolution and factors related to COVID-19 vaccination in Canadian children, gaps in research on COVID-19 vaccine mistrust (VM) across ethnocultural groups hinder tailored public health responses. This study examines the sociodemographic characteristics and factors related to COVID-19 VM among racially diverse Canadian parents with children aged 0-12 years from Arab, Asian, Black, Indigenous, and White communities. A cross-sectional study was conducted among a representative sample of 2528 parents of children aged 0-12 years across Canada. They completed measures

Heavy drinking and smoking have been found to be among the leading causes of morbidity and mortality within Indigenous youth in North America. The focus of this study was to examine the relative roles of cultural identity, parent-child communication about the harms of substance use (SU), and perception about peers' opinions on heavy drinking and cigarette smoking among Indigenous youth. Strong Indigenous cultural identity, parent-child communication about SU, and affiliation with peers who do not use and/or who disapprove of substance use were all expected to reduce risk for heavy drinking and

Generalist health interventions that aim to reduce chronic health disparities between Indigenous and non-Indigenous populations can be culturally adapted to better meet the needs of Indigenous people in Canada; however, little is known regarding best practices in implementing these adaptations. The present study first provides a review of the research process used to adapt a previous evidence-based housing initiative for Indigenous youth in Northwestern Ontario. Second, it includes an overview of the adaptations that were made and the associated rationale for such adaptations. Third, it examin

BACKGROUND: Indigenous-led initiatives to improve access to opioid use disorder (OUD) treatment and harm reduction are helping transform care and safety for First Nations Peoples. Safer opioid supply (SOS) involves the provision of pharmaceutical-grade opioids as an alternative to the unregulated drug supply. We sought to examine trends and characteristics of First Nations Peoples initiating SOS in Ontario, Canada.
METHODS: We conducted a population-based cross-sectional study of registered First Nations Peoples in Ontario with OUD, who initiated SOS between January 1, 2019 and December 31, 2

Chronic inflammatory skin diseases (CISD) including atopic dermatitis (AD), psoriasis, and hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) are chronic conditions contributing to health inequities. Their burden among North American Indigenous peoples remains poorly characterized. This scoping review assessed Indigenous representation in clinical research, Phase III/IV trials, and practice guidelines on CISD in Canada and the United States, identifying evidence gaps and proposing strategies to enhance inclusion. Following PRISMA-ScR methodology, MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, Cochrane Library, Indigenous-focused databa

BACKGROUND: Currently, pregnant Indigenous Peoples living in remote, rural, and northern Indigenous communities in Canada are subjected to evacuation birth policy, whereby they are evacuated out of their community to large, urban hospitals to give birth. Evacuation for birth is assumed to decrease biomedical risk because people are birthing in hospitals. In Canadian health systems, evaluating and mitigating biomedical risk has become a standard in health decision-making but this framework disregards Indigenous ontologies and epistemologies that guide Indigenous people in their evaluation of he

This commentary focuses on how some Indigenous communities in the United States (U.S.) and Canada are addressing the opioid epidemic within the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, from the perspective of the co-authors as researchers, clinicians, and pharmacists working within or among Indigenous communities in three eastern Canadian provinces and two western U.S. states. The pandemic has likely exacerbated opioid use problems among Indigenous communities, especially for individuals with acute distress or comorbid mental illness, or who are in need of withdrawal management or residential service

This paper documents the height of Indigenous men from the Pacific Northwest who were incarcerated in British Columbia's jails during a period of colonization and increasing market access. The average height of adults from a given community reflects the standard of living in that community at the time the adults were growing to maturity. After correcting for the impact of sample selection arising from prisoners' personal attributes, their home communities' access to market opportunities, and unobserved height determinants associated with exposure to the colonial criminal justice system, we fin

BACKGROUND: First Nations, Inuit, and Métis are at higher risk of adverse birth outcomes than are non-Indigenous people. However, relatively little perinatal information is available at the national level for Indigenous people overall or for specific identity groups.
DATA AND METHODS: This analysis describes and compares rates of preterm birth, small-for-gestational-age birth, large-for-gestational-age birth, stillbirth, and infant mortality (neonatal, postneonatal, and cause-specific) in a nationally representative sample of First Nations, Inuit, Métis, and non-Indigenous births. PURPOSE: There remains limited information on racial diversity amongst medical student bodies. Given the lack of demographic data collected for medical student admissions, we sought to understand the ethno-racial identity and capital of medical students across Canada.
METHOD: Our objectives were two-fold: (1) Collect demographic data about medical students across Canada and (2) Apply Bourdieu's theoretical framework of capital to the data. Adopting a pragmatist research paradigm, we collected data on Canadian medical students using an online survey administered to all medical students across

The premise that "trauma" is transmitted across generations is central to the historical trauma discourse currently circulating in indigenous communities and professional networks in Canada. Historical trauma may be understood as the offspring of two older and apparently antithetical discourses: Native healing, and colonial professional critiques of indigenous family life. While the former has maintained a therapeutic focus on restoring intergenerational social relations, the latter has pathologized indigenous parenting and child-rearing practices. The emergence of historical trauma marks a gl

INTRODUCTION: Globally, medical schools are operationalising policies and programming to address Indigenous health inequities. Although progress has been made, challenges persist. In Canada, where this research is conducted, Indigenous representation within medical schools remains low, leaving a small number of Indigenous advocates leading unprecedented levels of equity-related work, often with insufficient resources. The change needed within medical education cannot fall solely on the shoulders of Indigenous Peoples; non-Indigenous Peoples must also be involved. This work aims to better under

Autism exists across all populations, including among Indigenous Peoples, yet the experiences of First Nations caregivers of Autistic children remain significantly under-researched. This study explores the lived realities of caregivers in two First Nations communities: Maskwacîs (Alberta) and Six Nations of the Grand River (Ontario). Guided by a Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) approach and grounded in the nêhiyaw concept of wâhkôtowin (relationality), this research was co-led by the Autism Community Research Circle, which included Elders, Autistic individuals, caregivers, and pro

The purpose of this study is to examine the parent-child experiences of Indigenous and non-Indigenous mothers and fathers experiencing homelessness, mental illness, and separation from their children. A qualitative thematic analysis of baseline and 18-month follow-up narrative interviews was used to compare 12 mothers (n = 8 Indigenous and n = 4 nonindigenous) with 24 fathers (n = 13 Indigenous and n = 11 non-Indigenous). First, it was found that children are more central in the lives of mothers than fathers. Second, Indigenous parents' narratives were characterized by interpersonal and system

Despite the use of pneumococcal conjugate vaccines for pediatric immunization, North American Indigenous populations continue to experience high burden of pneumococcal infections. Naturally acquired antibodies, which can protect unvaccinated adults against pneumococcal infections, have not previously been studied in Canadian Indigenous people. We analysed concentrations of natural serum IgG, IgM and IgA antibodies specific to 7 serotype-specific capsular polysaccharides (3, 6B, 9V, 14, 19A, 19F and 23F) in 141 healthy individuals (age between 18 and 80 years), including Indigenous adults livin
