Addressing Infant and Young Child Feeding Recommendations From a Planetary Health Perspective.

Current international infant and young child (IYC) feeding recommendations consider nutrition and health but not environmental impacts. Only a handful of countries have dietary guidelines that provide quantitative recommendations for food groups of environmental concern. This study aimed to perform a narrative review of the environmental impacts of commercial milk formula compared with breastfeeding and to analyze the degree to which current country-specific IYC feeding recommendations are aligned with sustainable dietary targets. A mixed-methods review was conducted, including the following:

Preterm infant retinal OCT markers of perinatal health and retinopathy of prematurity.

The increasing survival of preterm infants has led to the importance of improving long-term outcomes associated with preterm birth. Antenatal and perinatal insults not only impact mortality, but also long-term disability. While in the intensive care nursery, preterm infants are also exposed to various stressors that lead to long-term cognitive deficits. It is therefore critical to identify early, low-stress, non-invasive biomarkers for preterm infant health. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a powerful imaging modality that has recently been adapted to the infant population and provides no

Maternal Mental Health Diagnoses and Infant Emergency Department Use, Hospitalizations, and Death.

BACKGROUND: The period surrounding childbirth is a uniquely vulnerable time for women and their mental health. We sought to describe the association between maternal mental health diagnoses in the year prior and after birth and infant Emergency Department (ED) utilization, hospitalization, and death. METHODS: We studied mothers who gave singleton live birth in California (2011-2017) and their infants using linked infant birth and death certificates and maternal and infant discharge records. Maternal mental health diagnoses in the year before and after birth were identified using International

Relationship between Perceived Quality of Prenatal Care and Maternal/Infant Health Outcomes.

OBJECTIVES: Studies have shown that quality of care affects patient health outcomes and well-being. In this study, we examine the relationship between perceived quality of prenatal care, birth outcomes, and postpartum depression (PPD). METHODS: We use data from the third wave of the Listening to Mothers dataset (2013). After removing missing data, the analytic sample size included 2168 women. Through linear and logistic regression analyses, we test the following hypotheses: higher perceived quality of prenatal care will have a positive association with a likelihood of vaginal delivery and nor

Most common infant health concerns in osteopathic practices in Germany. A survey.

BACKGROUND: In Germany, more parents have been seeking help from osteopaths for their infants and children in recent years. This implies an increasing demand of reliable evidence regarding the effectiveness of osteopathic intervention for this group. OBJECTIVE: To identify the 'typical' (most common) health concerns of parents when presenting their infants (age 0-12 months) in pediatric osteopathic practices. METHODS: For the purpose of this survey, well-trained osteopaths who specialize in the treatment of children and infants were selected. A documentation form containing a list of the lik

Sex differences in infant health following ART-treated, subfertile, and fertile deliveries.

PURPOSE: Among infants following ART-treated, subfertile, and fertile deliveries to determine (1) the presence and magnitude of sex differences in health outcomes and (2) whether the presence of sex differences varied among maternal fertility groups. METHODS: Retrospective cohort analysis of infants born in Massachusetts (MA) in 2004-2013 who were conceived by ART. The Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology Clinic Outcome Reporting System was linked to the Pregnancy to Early Life Longitudinal data system, which links birth certificates to hospital discharge records for MA mothers and in

Home Visiting and Use of Infant Health Care: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Evaluations of home visiting models have shown that they can reduce children's health care use in the first year of life. Models that exclusively use nurses as home visitors may cost more and be infeasible given nursing shortages in some locations. The goal of this study was to test whether a universal home visiting model employing a nurse-parent educator team as home visitors reduces health care use in the first year of life. METHODS: This study was a randomized controlled clinical trial of an intensive home visiting program delivered in homes of primary caregivers

The perinatal system for mothers and babies, which has evolved over the past 9 years at the Morioka Red Cross Hospital. I explained the case of a 25-year-old woman who had already been suffering from depression before her pregnancy, and the course of improvement she experienced under this support system. In particular, I have shown a means of sup

Maternal, perinatal and infant health in Bedouin and Jews in southern Israel.

A study has been made of 3,745 Bedouin and 9,422 Jewish babies born in 1972-73 to residents of the Beersheba district of southern Israel (the Negev). Newborn infants weighing less than 1 kg were excluded. Thirty-seven percent of the Bedouin babies were born at home; their mothers tended to be older and of higher parity than those choosing to deliver in hospital. Less than 6% of Bedouin mothers had been to school, compared with 90% of the Jews; 30% were aged under 20 or over 34 years, compared with 18% of the Jews, and 23% were having their seventh or later baby, compared with 12% of the Jews.

Mapping the exposome-microbiota-host axis for prenatal origins of infant health.

Prenatal exposures influence infant health, yet the microbiota related mechanisms remain unclear. We profiled 776 maternal exposome variables and meconium microbiota in 1,689 mother-infant pairs, establishing a network linking maternal exposures, neonatal microbiota, and 10 infant outcomes. Using multiomics, pathway enrichment, and robust regression, we identified maternal anthropometrics and clinical indicators as key predictors of infant development, and specific metabolic and chemical exposures as major factors associated with microbiota composition. These microbial changes were associated

Birth order and infant health: Evidence from maternal immunisation in New Zealand.

Immunisation during pregnancy is a vital strategy to protect infants from infectious diseases in their first months of life, yet little is known about how birth order relates to maternal vaccination uptake and infants' risk of severe illness. Drawing on administrative data from New Zealand covering more than 200,000 births between 2015 and 2023, I analyse the relationship between birth order and maternal vaccination against pertussis and influenza. I also examine subsequent infant hospitalisations for these diseases. The findings show that later-born children experience higher hospitalisation

The Current Status of Infant Oral Health Instruction Within Predoctoral Dental Education.

A pediatric dental home is a patient-provider relationship that establishes compassionate, comprehensive care that is continually accessible. For more than two decades, professional organizations have recommended children establish a dental home by their first birthday. In 2024, the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) Council on Pre-Doctoral Education had a governance charge approved by the AAPD Board of Trustees to evaluate the status of infant oral health (IOH) instruction in pre-doctoral dental education. This study was designed to describe the current state of didactic and clini

An educational intervention to update health workers about HIV and infant feeding.

Clinical guidelines are used to translate research findings into evidence-based clinical practice but are frequently not comprehensively adopted by health workers (HWs). HIV and infant feeding guidelines were revised by the World Health Organization to align feeding advice for HIV-exposed and unexposed infants, and these were adopted in South Africa in 2017. We describe an innovative, team-based, mentoring programme developed to update HWs on these guidelines. The intervention was underpinned by strong theoretical frameworks and aimed to improve HWs' attitudes, knowledge, confidence, and skill
