[Antenatal corticosteroid therapy and late preterm infant morbidity and mortality].

INTRODUCTION: Late preterm infants (34-36 weeks gestation) have a morbidity rate significantly higher than those born at term. However, few interventions have been undertaken to reduce this increased morbidity and mortality. Antenatal corticosteroid administration could be an effective preventive measure. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to describe the morbidity associated with late prematurity in our institution, and determine if there are differences between those who received antenatal corticosteroids. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A prospective observational study was conducted on late pret

[Infant mortality from birth defects in Costa Rica, 1981-2010].

OBJECTIVE: Identify trends for different types of birth defects and their impact on infant (IMR) and neonatal (NMR) mortality rates in Costa Rica from 1981 to 2010. METHODS: Infant, neonatal, and postneonatal mortality trends were analyzed, using data from the Central American Population Center, which uses the International Classification of Diseases, versions 9 and 10, to classify causes of death. For each group of birth defects, a Poisson log-linear regression model was constructed. IMR and NMR, relative risk, and 95% confidence intervals (95%CI) were calculated for the three decades (1981-

Exploration and innovation in addressing maternal, infant and neonatal mortality.

The Government of Nepal has been remarkably progressive in introducing innovative community-based maternal newborn and child health interventions in an effort to address the major causes of maternal and child mortality in the country. This article describes the introduction of innovative interventions, including a review of the landmark research that precipitated the discussion and provided evidence of practical feasibility, the acceptance of the intervention concept and validity, the approval process and the introduction and results from the pilot interventions. These interventions, which inc

Alcohol drinking pattern during pregnancy and risk of infant mortality.

BACKGROUND: The safety of small amounts of alcohol drinking and occasional binge-level drinking during pregnancy remains unsettled. We examined the association of maternal average alcohol intake and binge drinking (>or=5 drinks per sitting) with infant mortality, both in the neonatal and postneonatal period. METHODS: Participants were 79,216 mothers who were enrolled in the Danish National Birth Cohort in 1996-2002, gave birth to a live-born singleton, and provided information while they were pregnant on alcohol consumption during pregnancy. Information on infant mortality and causes of death

A genetic reason for male excess in infant respiratory mortality?

UNLABELLED: Male infants have a 50% higher risk of death from respiratory diseases and a number of congenital heart diseases that can lead to cerebral hypoxia. The most important of these diseases are infant respiratory distress syndrome and sudden infant death syndrome. CONCLUSION: The mechanism behind the excess peri-mortality rate in male infants is not known. A genetic factor leading to reduced tolerance to hypoxia is possible.

Social deprivation and the causes of stillbirth and infant mortality.

AIMS: To investigate the relation between social deprivation and causes of stillbirth and infant mortality. METHODS: Stillbirths and infant deaths in 6347 enumeration districts in Wales were linked with the Townsend score of social deprivation. In 1993-98 there were 211 072 live births, 1147 stillbirths, and 1223 infant deaths. Poisson regression analysis was used to estimate the magnitude of effect for associations between the Townsend score and categories of death by age and the causes of death. The relative risk of death between most and least deprived enumeration districts was derived. R

Socioeconomic correlates of infant mortality in Hong Kong, 1979-93.

Although Hong Kong's infant mortality is among the lowest in the world, there may still be subgroups in the population with unusually high and possibly avoidable mortality rates. We conducted an ecological study on the relationship between socioeconomic deprivation and infant mortality in Hong Kong by using government data from three periods: 1979-83, 1984-88 and 1989-93. The study population comprised all infant births in 65 modified districts in Hong Kong in the period 1979-93. Infant, neonatal and post-neonatal mortality rates (IMRs, NMRs and PNMRs) were used as the health indicators. An F

Predictors of operative mortality and morbidity after infant heart transplantation.

We retrospectively analyzed the impact of recipient, donor, and operative factors on the operative mortality and morbidity of 36 consecutive infant heart transplantations. Operative survival was excellent at 94%. Among 34 survivors, operative morbidity in 12 patients included acute severe allograft failure with or without prolonged ventilatory support. The cohort was characterized by age less than 4 months (32 of 36), a diagnosis of hypoplastic left heart syndrome (29 of 36), and the use of circulatory arrest (27 of 36); these variables were colinear and could not be used to predict operative

A County-Level Collaboration to Reduce Infant Mortality: Cradle Cincinnati.

OBJECTIVE: We sought to implement and determine the efficacy of Cradle Cincinnati-a county-level collective impact collaborative established to reduce the infant mortality rate (IMR) of Hamilton County, Ohio. We hypothesized that the reduction in the IMR of Hamilton County was attributable to the work of Cradle Cincinnati. METHODS: Cradle Cincinnati, conceptualized in the early 2000s and iteratively implemented in the ensuing decades, emphasizes stakeholder engagement, data-driven learning, and community-led strategies to address infant mortality. To determine efficacy, we employed augmented

Increases in drug-related infant mortality in the United States.

OBJECTIVES: We explored temporal trends in drug-related infant deaths in the United States (U.S.) from 2018 to 2022. METHODS: We used data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Wide-ranging Online Data for Epidemiologic Research (WONDER). A total of 295 drug-involved infant deaths were identified from 2018 to 2022 (provisional mortality data for year 2022) based on the underlying cause of death. RESULTS: In the U.S. from 2018 to 2022, there was a significant 2.2-fold increase in drug-involved infant mortality. The observed increases were higher in non-Hispanic White and Black i

Infant Mortality Attributable to Birth Defects - United States, 2003-2017.

Birth defects are a leading cause of infant mortality in the United States, accounting for 20.6% of infant deaths in 2017 (1). Rates of infant mortality attributable to birth defects (IMBD) have generally declined since the 1970s (1-3). U.S. linked birth/infant death data from 2003-2017 were used to assess trends in IMBD. Overall, rates declined 10% during 2003-2017, but decreases varied by maternal and infant characteristics. During 2003-2017, IMBD rates decreased 4% for infants of Hispanic mothers, 11% for infants of non-Hispanic black (black) mothers, and 12% for infants of non-Hispanic whi

Robust relationship between air quality and infant mortality in Africa.

Poor air quality is thought to be an important mortality risk factor globally1-3, but there is little direct evidence from the developing world on how mortality risk varies with changing exposure to ambient particulate matter. Current global estimates apply exposure-response relationships that have been derived mostly from wealthy, mid-latitude countries to spatial population data4, and these estimates remain unvalidated across large portions of the globe. Here we combine household survey-based information on the location and timing of nearly 1 million births across sub-Saharan Africa with sat

Birth Order and Injury-Related Infant Mortality in the U.S.

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the risk of death during the first year of life due to injury, such as unintentional injury and homicide, by birth order in the U.S. METHODS: Using national birth cohort-linked birth-infant death data (births, 2000-2010; deaths, 2000-2011), risks of infant mortality due to injury in second-, third-, fourth-, and fifth or later-born singleton infants were compared with first-born singleton infants. Risk ratios were estimated using log-binomial models adjusted for maternal age, marital status, race/ethnicity, and education. The statistical

Beriberi (thiamine deficiency) and high infant mortality in northern Laos.

BACKGROUND: Infantile beriberi (thiamine deficiency) occurs mainly in infants breastfed by mothers with inadequate intake of thiamine, typically among vulnerable populations. We describe possible and probable cases of infantile thiamine deficiency in northern Laos. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Three surveys were conducted in Luang Namtha Province. First, we performed a retrospective survey of all infants with a diagnosis of thiamine deficiency admitted to the 5 hospitals in the province (2007-2009). Second, we prospectively recorded all infants with cardiac failure at Luang Namtha Hospital
