Strategies for preventing aerosol-generated microbial contamination in dental procedures: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Aerosol generation in dental practice is a significant concern in infection control. This study aimed to investigate the strategies for controlling and preventing aerosol-generated microbes during dental procedures. METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was performed using Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis (PRISMA) guidelines through electronic databases (PubMed, ScienceDirect, Cochrane Library, Google Scholar, and Scopus) for studies reporting interventions, including mouthwash and suction devices, that were effective against pathogens genera

Common dental infections in the primary care setting.

Family physicians commonly encounter patients with dental infections, such as dental caries and periodontal disease. Dental caries is caused by bacteria that destroy the enamel and dentin; it can be detected by an oral examination that shows stained pits or fissures on the tooth surface. Use of fluoride is the most effective prevention measure for dental caries. Untreated caries may progress to pulpitis and, eventually, to necrosis of the pulp. In irreversible pulpitis, the tooth dies and the patient may have a localized abscess that can spread to surrounding tissue. Periodontal infections are

The Oral Cavity Potentially Serving as a Reservoir for SARS-CoV-2 but Not Necessarily Facilitating the Spread of COVID-19 in Dental Practice.

Intraoral tissues, secretions, and microenvironments may provide severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) with the conditions necessary for viral cellular entry and inhabitation. The aim of the present study is to overview the oral cavity that potentially serves as a reservoir for SARS-CoV-2, and then discuss the possibility that such oral cavity facilitates the spread of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in dental practice. Articles were retrieved from PubMed/Medline, LitCovid, ProQuest, Google Scholar, and preprint medRxiv databases. Results of the literature search ind

Evidence-based prevention, management, and monitoring of dental caries.

Dental caries, not unlike periodontal diseases, is now recognized as an infectious, transmissible, multifactorial disease of bacterial origin. Current evidence-based emphasis is on the need to recognize a carious lesion in its earliest stage before demineralization has produced a cavitated lesion that requires restoration by a dentist. As a result of current understanding of caries control, the dental hygienist's role as a prevention specialist is to determine the dental caries risk factors for patients of all ages and to introduce remineralization strategies into the patient's dental hygiene

Classical and variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob diseases and their potential impact on the practice of clinical dentistry in Australia.

Following recent published evidence regarding the experimental transmission of prion diseases via blood transfusion, dental practitioners have expressed their concern about the potential impact of these transmissible spongiform encephalopathies on dental care provision. This review provides updated information on Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and related disorders and highlights their potential significance for the practice of clinical dentistry. The current guidelines in Australia relating to infection control and clinical dental procedures are discussed together with recommended guidelines and c

Detection of anaerobic odontogenic infections by fluorine-18 fluoromisonidazole.

Odontogenic infections are a potential risk for patients who receive cervicofacial radiotherapy and should be treated before irradiation. Anaerobic microbial infections are the most common causes. This study assessed the value of the hypoxic imaging agent fluorine-18 fluoromisonidazole (FMISO) in detecting anaerobic odontogenic infections. Positron emission tomography (PET) imaging was performed at 2 h after injection of 370 MBq (10 mCi) of FMISO in 26 nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients and six controls with healthy teeth. Tomograms were interpreted visually to identify hypoxic foci in the jaw.

Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices of Dental Students from Romania Regarding Self-Perceived Risk and Prevention of Infectious Diseases.

University education is a leading source of information for dental practitioners. Particular emphasis should be given to determining the extent to which students acquire positive knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) and positive metacompetences beyond the scope of each studied dental discipline. We performed a cross-sectional questionnaire-based study among dentistry students from Romania to assess self-perceived risk of infectious diseases and their KAP on topics related to infectious disease prevention. The surveyed students presented good knowledge regarding personal protective equipme

Clinical analysis of osteonecrosis of the jaw in patients with rheumatoid arthritis: risk factors and oral health implications.

INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVES: Osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ) is a rare but serious complication in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and its risk factors remain unclear. This study aimed to clarify the clinical characteristics and risk factors for ONJ in patients with RA. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 35 patients with RA who developed ONJ against 276 control patients with RA who received collaborative medical-dental care but did not develop ONJ. Group comparisons were performed using Mann-Whitney U and Fisher's exact tests; logistic regression was performed to determine the risk fact

Do dentists have sufficient information about their patients to control infection?

This study examined dentists' knowledge of infection control, what dentists say they do to control infection, and what procedures they actually take to prevent the transmission of disease. A professional actor, obviously in need of dental care and playing the part of a patient, was sent to three groups of randomly selected dentists in general practice. The dentists were uninformed subjects who were debriefed about the research immediately after their part in the experiment was completed. The study found that dentists apparently know what they should do to protect themselves from contamination.

The attitude of patients at risk for infective endocarditis toward dental treatment.

This study deals with four major characteristics that directly affect motivation and attitude of patients at risk for infective endocarditis (IE) toward oro-dental health. Dental anxiety, self image, recognized importance of oro-dental care, and active coping were self-assessed by 25 patients at risk for IE and by a matched control group. The study group demonstrated less dental anxiety, lower self image and higher levels of recognized importance of oro-dental care than the controls, while active coping did not differ between the two groups. A review of the relevant literature is also presente

Staphylococci from dental personnel.

Thirty dental students and five professors were cultured in nares, throat, and hands for the presence of staphylococci. Twenty-four students and two professors were colonized with staphylococci that were classified as S. aureus. Twelve students and one professor were colonized with staphylococci that produced enterotoxin. Care needs to be taken to avoid contaminating patients during dental examination, particularly during any type of surgery.

In-vitro assessment of oral fluid aspiration by various high-speed air-turbine dental handpieces.

BACKGROUND: The control of aspiration contamination of dental handpiece (DHP) is crucial for mitigating cross-infection risks associated with dental chair units (DCUs) and DHP. However, the anti-aspiration capabilities of DHPs are predominantly asserted by manufacturers, with an absence of standardized methodologies to assess these claims. AIM: To evaluate the anti-aspiration performance and the mechanism of DHPs to improve cross-infection prevention strategies. METHODS: Five different manufacturers of DHPs included SMART torque S609C (Group SMART), TWINPOWER TURBINE 4H PAR-4HUEX (Group TWIN

Saliva is a non-negligible factor in the spread of COVID-19.

SARS-CoV-2, a novel emerging coronavirus, has caused severe disease (COVID-19), and rapidly spread worldwide since the beginning of 2020. SARS-CoV-2 mainly spreads by coughing, sneezing, droplet inhalation, and contact. SARS-CoV-2 has been detected in saliva samples, making saliva a potential transmission route for COVID-19. The participants in dental practice confront a particular risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection due to close contact with the patients and potential exposure to saliva-contaminated droplets and aerosols generated during dental procedures. In addition, saliva-contaminated surfaces c
