The current study was designed to evaluate a tool for the self-identification of tapeworm carriers. Clinical and animal health care practitioners and schoolteachers were trained regarding the life cycle, risk factors, and control measures related to infection with Taenia solium. More than 120 small glass bottles with a few tapeworm segments fixed in formaldehyde and an instructional guide were distributed among all clinical practitioners (physicians and nurses) working in health centers. The guide contained 10 key points on how to ask questions about tapeworm infections. Information on taenios

Diabetic foot ulcers remain a challenge to practitioners and costly to health care systems. They range from simple to complex and many treatment options are available. By following standard wound care protocols to ensure adequate blood supply, infection control, debridement, wound management, and offloading many diabetic foot ulcers heal in a timely fashion. For those that do not, an underlying foot and ankle musculoskeletal abnormality must be suspected and treated concomitantly with soft tissue treatment. This article presents a systematic orthoplastics approach for surgical treatment of dia

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the practice of medicine. Dermatologic laser and energy-based device (EBD) treatments carry a potential risk for the transmission of SARS-CoV-2 both for the patient and the practitioner. These risks include close practitioner to patient proximity, the treatment of higher viral load areas such as the face, the potential for infective bioparticles being carried by generated plumes and aerosols, and the direct contact between device, practitioner and patient.
OBJECTIVES: SARS-CoV-2 is a highly infective respiratory pathogen transmitted by respirato

BACKGROUND: Healthcare associated infections from indwelling urinary catheters lead to increased patient morbidity and mortality.
AIM: The purpose of this study was to determine if direct observation of the urinary catheter insertion procedure, as compared to the standard process, decreased catheter utilization and urinary tract infection rates.
METHODS: This case control study was conducted in a medical intensive care unit. During phase I, a retrospective data review was conducted on utilsiation and urinary catheter infection rates when practitioners followed the institution's standard inse

Once a Hemophilus influenzae isolate is identified as the cause of a respiratory tract infection in an adult, it should be tested for beta-lactamase production, ie, for ampicillin resistance. The incidence of ampicillin-resistant strains of H influenzae is increasing. The Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta estimates an average incidence nationwide of 18% to 22%; the rate varies considerably from community to community. Thus, practitioners should be aware of the ampicillin-resistance rate in their community and should keep this rate in mind especially when treating patients empirically. Pat

Mucormycosis is a rare opportunistic infection caused by fungus belonging to the order Mucorales. A case of a controlled diabetic male with rhino maxillary mucormycosis, with cerebral extension, is described. The patient presented with hemifacial swelling, a nasal twang in his voice, fever, ocular signs, gross tissue destruction, and was sluggish. Early recognition of mucormycosis is necessary to limit the spread of infection, which can lead to high morbidity and mortality. Therefore, health practitioners should be familiar with the signs and symptoms of the disease.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to investigate the number of persons who obtain medical attention for Hepatitis C Virus (HCV). In addition, we wanted to get an overview of the supply situation (frequency and length of therapy or lab controls) for patients with HCV infection.
METHODOLOGY: Data obtained from statutory insurance companies were analyzed.
RESULTS: The prevalence of HCV diagnosis was 0.19 % within 3 years. Following a positive HCV-test in 19 % of patients the diagnosis of acute HCV was documented. In 2008, 9.3 % of patients were treated with pegylated Interferon alpha with o

In 1980-1983 members of IRESCC interviewed parents of 555 children with newly diagnosed cancer on topics of possible aetiological significance. Identical questions were asked of the parents of 1100 control children chosen from hospital admissions and general practitioner lists. Medical information was confirmed whenever possible by cross-checking with NHS records. Data for the 41 children with germ cell tumours and their 82 controls are reported here. The cases had more major congenital malformations than controls, including one neural tube defect. More case than control mothers and fathers re

In Fall 1981, an outbreak of acute infectious conjunctivitis with keratitis (EKC) occurred in patients who had visited a private ophthalmology clinic just prior to onset of illness. Among an estimated 2,200 patient visits to the office from August 10 to October 15, 1981 for problems unrelated to infectious conjunctivitis, 39 (1.8%) persons subsequently developed EKC. The median incubation period was 6.5 days (range, 1 to 14 days). A case-control study was done to identify risk factors associated with contracting EKC; patients with EKC were more likely than control patients to have been examine

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the leading cause of acute lower respiratory tract infections in neonates, infants, and children worldwide. The virus is estimated to infect 97% of this population in the United States by the age of 2 years, leading to hospitalization for severe lower respiratory tract disease in 2-3% of infants younger than age 6 months. Two preventive options, prenatal administration of a maternal vaccine and administration of a long-acting monoclonal antibody to the infant, are now available for the prevention of RSV-associated lower respiratory tract infection in infant

University education is a leading source of information for dental practitioners. Particular emphasis should be given to determining the extent to which students acquire positive knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) and positive metacompetences beyond the scope of each studied dental discipline. We performed a cross-sectional questionnaire-based study among dentistry students from Romania to assess self-perceived risk of infectious diseases and their KAP on topics related to infectious disease prevention. The surveyed students presented good knowledge regarding personal protective equipme

An interdisciplinary workgroup from the National Committee for Practical Tuberculosis Control in the Netherlands has written an evidence-based practice guideline on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of HIV-infected patients with active tuberculosis or latent tuberculosis infection. The diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis are effectively the same in patients with or without an HIV infection. The diagnosis is more complex in a patient with an HIV infection due to the effect of the immunodeficiency on diagnostic parameters. Concomitant treatment of tuberculosis and HIV is complicated b
