Polioencephalomalacia of dogs with thiamine deficiency.

A naturally occurring neurological disease occurred in six dogs fed cooked meat. Clinical signs were anorexia, progressive spastic paraparesis, recumbency, convulsions and death. The disease was characterized by bilaterally symmetrical spongy change and necrosis of brainstem nuclei with a lesion distribution pattern similar to that in thiamine deficient foxes and cats. An associated thiamine deficiency was evidenced by decreased thiamine levels in the blood of one dog and in the food of another, and rapid remission of clinical signs in a dog given thiamine hydrochloride. Thermal destruction of

The multifaceted role of the inferior colliculus in sensory prediction, reward processing, and decision-making.

The inferior colliculus (IC) has traditionally been regarded as an important relay in the auditory pathway, primarily involved in relaying auditory information from the brainstem to the thalamus. However, this study uncovers the multifaceted role of the IC in bridging auditory processing, sensory prediction, and reward prediction. Through extracellular recordings in monkeys engaged in a sound duration-based deviation detection task, we observed a 'climbing effect' in neuronal firing rates, indicative of an enhanced response over sound sequences linked to sensory prediction rather than reward a

Abnormal morphology and subcortical projections to the medial geniculate in an animal model of autism.

Auditory dysfunction, including hypersensitivity and tinnitus, is a common symptom of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Prenatal exposure to the antiseizure medication valproic acid (VPA) significantly increases the risk of ASD in humans and similar exposure is utilized as an animal model of ASD in rodents. Animals exposed to VPA in utero have abnormal activity in their auditory cortex in response to sounds, fewer neurons, abnormal neuronal morphology, reduced expression of calcium-binding proteins, and reduced ascending projections to the central nucleus of the inferior colliculus. Unfortunatel

Blast-induced tinnitus and spontaneous activity changes in the rat inferior colliculus.

High-pressure blast shockwaves are known to cause tinnitus. Imaging studies have shown that blast-induced tinnitus may result from damage to the inner ear structures and/or direct brain impact that trigger a cascade of neuroplastic changes in both auditory and non-auditory centers. Nevertheless, information is still lacking on the neurophysiological mechanisms underlying blast-induced tinnitus. In this study, we used a rat model and investigated the effect of blast-induced tinnitus on spontaneous activity in the inferior colliculus (IC) at one day, one month, and three months following blast.

The effects of nembutal anesthesia on the auditory steady-state response (ASSR) from the inferior colliculus and auditory cortex of the chinchilla.

We examined the effects of nembutal anesthesia on the amplitude of the auditory steady-state response (ASSR) in the inferior colliculus (IC) and auditory cortex (AC) of the chinchilla. Tungsten electrodes were chronically implanted following anesthesia with ketamine/acepromazine. After a recovery period, the chinchillas were placed in a passive restraining device and put in a sound-attenuating booth. Recordings were made from the right IC and AC simultaneously, while a two-tone stimulus was presented to the left ear. The stimuli consisted of two equal-level tones (F1 and F2) that were mixed ac

Central auditory metabolic activity induced by intense noise exposure.

Neural activity in the central auditory system was mapped by measuring 2-deoxyglucose (2-DG) uptake during a one hour exposure to a two-octave (1414-5656 Hz) band of noise. Gerbils were exposed to 100, 110 or 120 dB SPL, intensities which can produce only temporary (100 dB) or both temporary and permanent (120 dB) hearing loss. Exposure to 100 dB SPL evoked high levels of neural activity throughout responsive regions of auditory nuclei. At 110 dB SPL, a central region of low neural activity was surrounded by areas exhibiting increased activity. At 120 dB SPL, neural activity was low in almost

Patterns of Unilateral and Bilateral Projections From Layers 5 and 6 of the Auditory Cortex to the Inferior Colliculus in Mouse.

The auditory cortex sends massive projections to the inferior colliculus, but the organization of this pathway is not yet well understood. Previous work has shown that the corticocollicular projection emanates from both layers 5 and 6 of the auditory cortex and that neurons in these layers have different morphological and physiological properties. It is not yet known in the mouse if both layer 5 and layer 6 project bilaterally, nor is it known if the projection patterns differ based on projection location. Using targeted injections of Fluorogold into either the lateral cortex or dorsal cortex

Central acoustic tract in an echolocating bat: an extralemniscal auditory pathway to the thalamus.

To determine the sources and targets of auditory pathways that bypass the inferior colliculus in the mustache bat, we injected WGA-HRP in the medial geniculate body and related auditory nuclei of the thalamus as well as in the lower brainstem. We used electrophysiological methods to verify that the injection electrode was in an area responsive to sound. The only thalamic injections that produced retrograde transport to cells in auditory nuclei caudal to the inferior colliculus were those that included the suprageniculate nucleus. These injections labeled a group of large multipolar cells lying

Exercise increases blood flow to locomotor, vestibular, cardiorespiratory and visual regions of the brain in miniature swine.

1. The purpose of these experiments was to use radiolabelled microspheres to measure blood flow distribution within the brain, and in particular to areas associated with motor function, maintenance of equilibrium, cardiorespiratory control, vision, hearing and smell, at rest and during exercise in miniature swine. Exercise consisted of steady-state treadmill running at intensities eliciting 70 and 100 % maximal oxygen consumption (V(O(2),max)). 2. Mean arterial pressure was elevated by 17 and 26 % above that at rest during exercise at 70 and 100 % V(O(2),max), respectively. 3. Mean brain blood

NADPH-diaphorase-positive neurons in the human inferior colliculus: morphology, distribution and clinical implications.

Using the nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate-diaphorase (NADPH-d) reaction with nitroblue tetrazolium, we provided a detailed investigation of the distribution, dimensional characteristics and morphology of NADPH-d-positive neurons in the three main subdivisions of the human inferior colliculus (IC): central nucleus, pericentral nucleus, and external nucleus. In accordance with their perikaryal diameter, dendritic and axonal morphology, these neurons were categorized as large (averaging up to 45 μm in diameter), medium (20-30 µm), small (13-16 µm) and very small (7-10 µm). Their morph

Intracellular recordings in response to monaural and binaural stimulation of neurons in the inferior colliculus of the cat.

The inferior colliculus (IC) is a major auditory structure that integrates synaptic inputs from ascending, descending, and intrinsic sources. Intracellular recording in situ allows direct examination of synaptic inputs to the IC in response to acoustic stimulation. Using this technique and monaural or binaural stimulation, responses in the IC that reflect input from a lower center can be distinguished from responses that reflect synaptic integration within the IC. Our results indicate that many IC neurons receive synaptic inputs from multiple sources. Few, if any, IC neurons acted as simple re

The postnatal development of stimulated deoxyglucose uptake into the mouse cochlea and the inferior colliculus.

The effect of acoustic stimulation on the postnatal development of deoxyglucose uptake into the mouse cochlea and the inferior colliculus was evaluated. Animals between postnatal day 4 and 20 were separated into four different groups depending on their age. Tritiated deoxyglucose was injected intraperitoneally into each animal and tracer uptake was quantitated by microdissection of the tissues and scintillation counting. Acoustic stimulation at a noise level of 100 dB (A) resulted in supra-normal levels of deoxyglucose uptake for all auditory tissues during postnatal days 13, 14, and 15. The l

Inferior colliculus neuronal response abnormalities in genetically epilepsy-prone rats: evidence for a deficit of inhibition.

The genetically epilepsy-prone rat (GEPR) is abnormally susceptible to induction of seizures by acoustic stimulation. The inferior colliculus (IC) is critically important to audiogenic seizure susceptibility. The GEPR is more susceptible to induction of audiogenic seizures at 12 kHz than at other pure tone frequencies. IC neurons in the GEPR exhibit significantly elevated response thresholds and broader tuning characteristics than normal. These findings along with previous neurophysiological and anatomical data suggest that a hearing deficit occurs in the GEPR. IC neurons in the GEPR exhibit a

Neocortical projections of the suprageniculate and posterior thalamic nuclei in the marsupial brush-tailed possum, Trichosurus vulpecula (Phalangeridae), with a comparative commentary on the organization of the posterior thalamus in marsupial and placental mammals.

Axonal transport methods were used to determine the extent and organisation of neocortical projections from the suprageniculate (SG) and posterior (PO) thalamic nuclei in the brush-tailed possum. Our findings show that SG projects extensively to the auditory cortex, overlapping the cortical projection field of the medial geniculate nucleus, and to the immediately neighbouring association cortex. Though the input relationships of SG appear similar to those reported for other mammals, placental and marsupial, a strong SG projection to auditory cortex has not been reported previously. Neocortical

Time-dependent effects of acoustic trauma and tinnitus on extracellular levels of amino acids in the inferior colliculus of rats.

Chronic tinnitus is a debilitating condition with very few management options. Acoustic trauma that causes tinnitus has been shown to induce neuronal hyperactivity in multiple brain areas in the auditory pathway, including the inferior colliculus. This neuronal hyperactivity could be attributed to an imbalance between excitatory and inhibitory neurotransmission. However, it is not clear how the levels of neurotransmitters, especially neurotransmitters in the extracellular space, change over time following acoustic trauma and the development of tinnitus. In the present study, a range of amino a

Neonatal Deafening Selectively Degrades the Sensitivity to Interaural Time Differences of Electrical Stimuli in Low-Frequency Pathways in Rats.

We examined the effect of neonatal deafening on frequency-specific pathways for processing of interaural time differences (ITDs) in cochlear-implant stimuli. Animal studies have demonstrated differences in neural ITD sensitivity in the inferior colliculus (IC) depending on the intracochlear location of intracochlear stimulating electrodes. We used neonatally deafened (ND) rats of both sexes and recorded the responses of single neurons in the IC to electrical stimuli with ITDs delivered to the apical or basal cochlea and compared them with acutely deafened (AD) rats of both sexes with normal he
