Journal of developmental and behavioral pediatrics : JDBP1998eng
Which tells us more about children, behavioral science or the general literature? Actually, neither gave us much information until the last two centuries. Only since Rousseau's contributions in literature and Darwin's in science have accurate descriptions been offered. Now one can find presentations on the impact of physical characteristics and disabilities, family interactions, other social influences, and temperamental predispositions in both literature and science. The difference in treatment is that science describes in abstractions the general principles of human nature, while literature

Biomedical science suffered a loss of trust during the Covid-19 pandemic. Why? One reason is a crisis fueled by confusion over the epistemology of science. Attacks on biomedical expertise rest on a mistaken view of what the justification is for crediting scientific information. The ideas that science is characterized by universal agreement and that any evolution or change of beliefs about facts and theories undermines trustworthiness in science are simply false. Biomedical science is trustworthy precisely because it is fallible, admits error, adjusts to new information, and, most importantly,

Because of the multipurpose utility of followback surveys, six Public Health Service (PHS) agencies including the Bureau of Health Care and Delivery Assistance (BHCDA) financially assisted the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), which conducted the 1980 National Natality Survey (NNS) and 1980 National Fetal Mortality Survey (NFMS). These are called "followback" surveys because NCHS uses mail questionnaires and telephone to follow back informants (mothers, hospitals, and attendants at delivery) and medical sources of radiation named by informants, identified on Certificates of Live Bi

BACKGROUND: Passive dissemination of information in healthcare refers to the publication or mailing of newly established guidelines or recommendations. It is one of the least costly knowledge translation activities. This approach is generally considered to be ineffective or to result in only small changes in practice. Recent research, however, suggests that passive dissemination could, under certain conditions, result in modifications of practice, similar to more active dissemination approaches. The objective of our study was to uncover the conditions associated with the change in primary care

From August 1994 to June 1995, laboratories in 28 Mexican states and the Federal District submitted a total of 10098 diagnosed Pap test slides to Mexico's National Institute of Epidemiologic Diagnosis and Reference (INDRE) for reexamination by conventional methods and also by the automated PAPNET system in Suffern, New York, U.S.A. The aim was to determine the degree of agreement obtained by these various methods. Most of the slides examined (at least 78%) yielded negative results or merely indicated an inflammatory process; 8% to 14% indicated mild or moderate cervical dysplasia; and 2% to 3%

BACKGROUND: Health care disparity persists despite vigorous countermeasures. Clinician performance is paramount for equitable care processes and outcomes. However, precise and valid individual performance measures remain elusive.
OBJECTIVES: We sought to develop a generalizable, rigorous, risk-adjusted metric for individual clinician performance (MIP) derived directly from the electronic medical record (EMR) to provide visual, personalized feedback.
METHODS: We conceptualized MIP as risk responsiveness, i.e., administering an increasing number of interventions contingent on patient risk. We

INTRODUCTION: Whereas scientists depend on the language of probability to relay information about hazards, risk communication may be more effective when embedding scientific information in narratives. The persuasive power of narratives is theorized to reside, in part, in narrative transportation.
PURPOSE: This study seeks to advance the science of stories in risk communication by measuring real-time affective responses as a proxy indicator for narrative transportation during science messages that present scientific information in the context of narrative.
METHODS: This study employed a withi

The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the complexities surrounding public trust in science, particularly in the context of overwhelming data and political polarization. The call to “trust the science” emerged as both a symbol of confidence and a source of public tension, exposing the challenges in communicating scientific uncertainty, data interpretation, and expertise. This paper examines the critical role of communication in shaping public perceptions of science, emphasizing the need for epistemic humility and transparency in the face of uncertainty. While data availability increased, the real c

According to the Institute of Medicine (IOM) Committee on the Assessment of the U.S. Drug Safety System, "The recent highly publicized controversies surrounding the safety of some drugs have contributed to a public perception that the drug safety system is in crisis. It seems fair to say that this perception has created an opportunity for a thorough evaluation of the U.S. drug safety system." The evaluation was focused on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). To improve the FDA and its function in the public health system to improve therapeutics, it is critical to understand the contrib

Science communication broadly refers to the exchange of scientific information between people, whether through presentations, discussions, collaboration, or other formats. It can serve many goals, including sharing findings among colleagues, teaching students, and informing or persuading the public. This paper focuses on communicating biological science to non-expert audiences to inform, counter misinformation, and support evidence-based decision-making, especially when scientific evidence conflicts with an audience's existing beliefs. Communicating about biology is particularly challenging, a

The reality that volumes of published biomedical research are not reproducible is an increasingly recognized problem. Spurious results reduce trustworthiness of reported science, increasing research waste. While science should be self-correcting from a philosophical perspective, that in insolation yields no information on efforts required to nullify suspect findings or factors shaping how quickly science may be corrected. There is also a paucity of information on how perverse incentives in the publishing ecosystem favouring novel positive findings over null results shape the ability of publish

The original version of this article (Yang et al., 2023) unfortunately contained a mistake. In Acknowledgments, the funding information for the Zhejiang Provincial Natural Science Foundation of China (No. LBY21H160001) was wrong. The correct funding should be the Zhejiang Health Science and Technology Project (No. 2022KY682), China.

Quantitative information can be obtained through measurement, inference, or prediction. Each of these approaches has its own theoretical framework for assessing the credibility of the information produced: metrology for measured information, statistics for inferred information, and Computational Science and Engineering for predicted information, particularly through the Verification, Validation, and Uncertainty Quantification framework. These credibility assessment frameworks are mature and well-established, and they are especially important in fields such as in silico medicine, where reliable

Science capital, a collection of science-related forms of capital, promotes access to and utilization of scientific information, which is integral in a time of flourishing anti-science attitudes. Nonetheless, it is not yet known which individual-level characteristics are associated with science capital. The present study links sociological concepts of science capital to the psychological study of individual differences by examining the role of cognitive sophistication in science capital. Participants (n = 146) completed an online survey. To assess cognitive sophistication, we used measures ass

In recent years, the perception has grown that conflicts of interest are having a detrimental effect on medical science as it influences health policy and clinical practice, leading medical journals to enforce self-declaration of potential biases in the attempt to counteract or compensate for the problem. Conflict of interest (CoI) declarations have traditionally been considered inappropriate in pure science since its evaluation systems themselves constitute a mechanism for eliminating the effect of individual biases. Pure science is primarily evaluated by 'peer usage', in which scientific inf

Isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS) has been used in numerous fields of forensic science in a source inference perspective. This review compiles the studies published on the application of isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS) to the traditional fields of forensic science so far. It completes the review of Benson et al. [1] and synthesises the extent of knowledge already gathered in the following fields: illicit drugs, flammable liquids, human provenancing, microtraces, explosives and other specific materials (packaging tapes, safety matches, plastics, etc.). For each field, a discussion a

A 1999 report published by the Institute of Medicine shocked our nation's citizens and health care providers. This report, entitled To Err is Human: Building a Safer Health System, suggested that as many as 98,000 people die each year in the United States as a result of medical errors, making medical errors the 8th-leading cause of death. By comparison, Americans are much less likely to die from motor vehicle accidents, breast cancer, or AIDS. More Americans die annually from medication errors alone than from workplace injuries. Not all errors are fatal ones, of course. An error may cause only
