Monitoring Public Health During the 2023 Maui Wildfire Using Google Search Trends.

Wildfires pose acute and long-term threats to public health. This study used Google Trends to assess real-time public interest in health-related topics before, during and after the August 2023 Maui wildfires. Search terms were grouped into four categories: health care access, physical health, mental health, and help-seeking behavior. Daily search interest scores were aggregated and analyzed across three periods: pre-wildfire, wildfire, and post-wildfire. Findings revealed that physical health and health care access search interest remained relatively stable throughout the study period, with no

Human infants appreciate that information bears value for other individuals.

Humans' ability to recognize each other as seekers of information is crucial for effectively sharing knowledge, evaluating confidence, and reasoning about the role of knowledge in behavior. Here, we investigate the foundations of this 'epistemic sense' through a series of looking-time experiments, asking whether 14-month-old human infants recognize and evaluate the information-directed goals behind others' actions. In Experiments 1-3, we assess infants' understanding of scenarios where an individual seeks information driven by uncertainty or curiosity about objects. In Experiment 4, we examine

Is There a Weekly Pattern for Health Searches on Wikipedia and Is the Pattern Unique to Health Topics?

BACKGROUND: Online health information-seeking behaviors have been reported to be more common at the beginning of the workweek. This behavior pattern has been interpreted as a kind of "healthy new start" or "fresh start" due to regrets or attempts to compensate for unhealthy behavior or poor choices made during the weekend. However, the observations regarding the most common health information-seeking day were based only on the analyses of users' behaviors with websites on health or on online health-related searches. We wanted to confirm if this pattern could be found in searches of Wikipedia o

Consulting "Dr Google" for sexual dysfunction: a contemporary worldwide trend analysis.

Google Trends (GT) is a free, easily accessible search tool which can be used to analyze worldwide "big data" on the relative popularity of search terms over a specific period of time. To determine worldwide public interest in Peyronie' disease (PD), erectile dysfunction (ED), premature ejaculation (PE) treatments, their penetrance, variation, and how they compare over time. Worldwide search-engine trends analysis included electronic Google queries from people who searched PD, ED, and PE treatments options from January 2004 to October 2018, worldwide. Join-point regression (JPR) has been perfo

What do people search online concerning the "elusive" fibromyalgia? Insights from a qualitative and quantitative analysis of Google Trends.

Fibromyalgia is a chronic disease, characterized by pain, fatigue, and poor sleep quality. Patients and mainly those with chronic diseases tend to search for health-related material online. Google Trends (GT), an online tracking system of Internet hit-search volumes that recently merged with its sister project Google Insights for Search (Google Inc.), was used to explore Internet activity related to fibromyalgia. Digital interest in fibromyalgia and related topics searched worldwide has been reported in the last 13 years. A slight decline in this interest has been observed through the years, r

Comparative analysis of online health queries originating from personal computers and smart devices on a consumer health information portal.

BACKGROUND: The number of people using the Internet and mobile/smart devices for health information seeking is increasing rapidly. Although the user experience for online health information seeking varies with the device used, for example, smart devices (SDs) like smartphones/tablets versus personal computers (PCs) like desktops/laptops, very few studies have investigated how online health information seeking behavior (OHISB) may differ by device. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to examine differences in OHISB between PCs and SDs through a comparative analysis of large-scale health

Web search trends on fibromyalgia: development of a machine learning model.

OBJECTIVES: Fibromyalgia (FM) is a chronic pain condition characterised by widespread musculoskeletal pain, fatigue, and cognitive dysfunction. The growing reliance on the internet for health-related information has transformed how individuals seek medical knowledge, particularly for complex conditions like FM. This study aimed to analyse online search behaviours related to FM across multiple countries, identify temporal trends, and assess machine learning models for predicting search interest. METHODS: Google Trends data (2020-2024) were analysed across sixteen countries. Time-series analysi

‘Am I anorexic?’ Weight, eating and discourses of the body in online adolescent health communication.

This article explores the communicative choices of adolescents seeking advice from an internet-based health forum run by medical professionals. Techniques from the disciplines of sociolinguistics and corpus linguistics are integrated to examine the strategies used in adolescents’ health questions. We focus on the emergent theme of Weight and Eating, a concern which features prominently in adolescents’ requests to medical practitioners. The majority of advice requests are authored by adolescent girls, with queries peaking at age 12. A combined quantitative and qualitative analysis provides deta

Characterizing internet health information seeking strategies by socioeconomic status: a mixed methods approach.

BACKGROUND: The Internet is valuable for those with limited access to health care services because of its low cost and wealth of information. Our objectives were to investigate how the Internet is used to obtain health-related information and how individuals with differing socioeconomic resources navigate it when presented with a health decision. METHODS: Study participants were recruited from public settings and social service agencies. Participants listened to one of two clinical scenarios - consistent with influenza or bacterial meningitis - and then conducted an Internet search. Screen-ca

External incentives change the relation between confidence and epistemic curiosity.

Epistemic curiosity, defined as the desire for knowledge, is commonly viewed as an intrinsic, non-instrumental (i.e., not directed toward immediate tangible benefits) drive to seek information. Prior research has shown that epistemic curiosity is influenced by subjective confidence - the perceived certainty individuals hold regarding their knowledge or decisions. Recent evidence suggests that environmental structure determines whether curiosity is driven by low- or medium-confidence stimuli. However, the role of external incentives in shaping the curiosity-confidence relationship remains poorl

Interrupting Anxiety-Driven Online Health Searches: A Preventive Digital Cyberchondria Intervention.

The rise of cyberchondria, which is defined as excessive and anxiety-driven online health searches, presents a lot of challenges for individuals' well-being and also for public health in general. Often leading to stress or self-diagnoses, it is very important to support individuals in coping or even preventing this excessive misuse. Therefore, this work describes the design and prototypic development of a solution to prevent cyberchondria early. Important requirements through a user-centered, iterative design approach were identified and implemented. This work advances digital mental health by
