Informed push distribution of contraceptives in Senegal reduces stockouts and improves quality of family planning services.

Contraceptive use in Senegal is among the lowest in the world and has barely increased over the past 5 years, from 10% of married women in 2005 to 12% in 2011. Contraceptive stockouts in public facilities, where 85% of women access family planning services, are common. In 2011, we conducted a supply chain study of 33 public-sector facilities in Pikine and Guediawaye districts of the Dakar region to understand the magnitude and root causes of stockouts. The study included stock audits, surveys with 156 consumers, and interviews with facility staff, managers, and other stakeholders. At the facil

Clinical Model-Informed Precision Dosing Consult Service for Accelerating Personalized Medication in Pediatric Patients.

Traditional dosing strategies often rely on a "one-size-fits-all" paradigm, assuming an "average" patient with typical demographic and pharmacological characteristics. In reality, this often overlooks existing between-patient variability and can lead to suboptimal drug exposure or toxicity. This issue is especially pronounced in pediatric patients, who experience rapid growth and development of organ functions. Although patient's age and body size are often considered when determining pediatric dose, those factors account for only a relatively small part of the variability. Pharmacometrics pro

Physics-Informed Graph Learning for Spatially Contiguous and Capacity-Constrained Hospital Service Area Delineation.

Delineating Hospital Service Areas (HSAs) is critical for healthcare resource allocation and policymaking. However, existing methods struggle to simultaneously capture patient flow patterns, spatial contiguity, and multiple capacity constraints. Traditional spatial clustering fails to integrate flow networks effectively, while standard Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) often lack the capability to strictly enforce hard capacity constraints. Even the Spatially constrained Leiden algorithm, which couples flow and adjacency, often yields communities with near-zero inflow. We propose a novel framework,

Experiences of Female Informal Traders With Access to Health Care Services in Africa: Protocol for a Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: The African continent has witnessed a notable shift in its economic landscape, marked by a significant rise in unemployment and a parallel surge in informal trading activities. In response to economic challenges, a substantial number of women within the informal trading sector in African countries have ventured beyond their home settings to engage in trading, aiming to alleviate poverty within their households. However, this pursuit is often characterized by conditions of poverty and socioeconomic difficulties. These women frequently lack access to fundamental health care and socia

VALID AND INFORMED CONSENT IN ORTHOPAEDIC SURGERY: A MULTICENTRE, REGIONAL SERVICE EVALUATION OF CURRENT UK PRACTICE.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, there has been increasing focus upon tailoring the consent process to reflect patients' individual needs and concerns. Meanwhile, clinical litigation costs for 'failure to warn' as part of 'informed consent' remain staggeringly high. We aimed to investigate the validity of the patient consent process in elective lower limb arthroplasty surgery regionally, with a view to ascertaining how it could be improved. METHODS: Regional data across the East of England was collected retrospectively from seven hospital trusts (fifty data sets per hospital) in 2021 and analyzed

Impact of messaging informed by behavioural science on uptake of targeted lung health checks: a service evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Lung cancer is the most common cause of cancer death in the UK, and incidence is strongly associated with increasing age. Screening can improve survival by detecting cancer earlier. Targeted Lung Health Check (TLHC) programme is a lung cancer screening pilot offered to smokers or ex-smokers aged 55-74 years in certain areas of England. However, uptake remains as low as 20% in London. We did a service evaluation to assess the effect of adding messaging informed by behaviour science to invitation letters on TLHC uptake. METHODS: The intervention involved adding to the standard invit

Expanding Neuroprotective Care: A Trauma-Informed Approach to Delivery of Services within Pediatric Inpatient Units.

Children with a history of trauma or adverse childhood experiences may be at higher risk for poor psychological and physical responses to medical experiences aimed at enhancing their well-being. Health care institutions are aware of the need for integration of trauma-informed care (TIC) practices yet struggle to find frameworks that promote resiliency to medical stress. An approach called neuroprotective care buffers the effects of toxic stress negatively affecting child health and well-being. Although often used in neonatal and cardiac intensive care units, the development and broad implement

Monkeypox 2022: A Primer and Identify-Isolate-Inform (3I) Tool for Emergency Medical Services Professionals.

Monkeypox 2022 exhibits unprecedented human-to-human transmission and presents with different clinical features than those observed in prior outbreaks. Previously endemic only to West and Central Africa, the monkeypox virus spread rapidly world-wide following confirmation of a case in the United Kingdom on May 7, 2022 of an individual that had traveled to Nigeria. Detection of cases with no travel history confirms on-going community spread. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) professionals will likely encounter patients suspected or confirmed to have monkeypox, previously a rare disease and there

Geographic Information System (GIS) for mapping diagnostic services and sub-district administrative boundaries in tuberculosis: A novel attempt from India.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) remains a leading cause of death globally, with India accounting for 25% of the total disease burden. A significant barrier to elimination is delayed or inequitable access to diagnostic services, often accelerated by a lack of granular administrative health boundaries for effective planning. Additionally, identifying the exact locations of TB diagnostic facilities is relevant for understanding the geographic coverage of diagnostic services. METHODS: - Diverse types of data were obtained from multiple health and non-health sources. The study mapped 77 Tuberculosis

AccES: A Framework for Predicting Building-Level Loss of Accessibility to Essential Services Post-Disasters Based on Publicly Available Information.

Natural hazards significantly disrupt access to essential services, affecting individuals' capacity to withstand and recover from such events. However, existing hazard resilience models often fail to account for the interdependencies among essential services and lack the spatial resolution needed to assess accessibility loss at the building level. This study introduces the Predicting Loss of Access to Essential Services (AccES) framework-a novel, data-driven, and people-centered approach that uses publicly available information to evaluate accessibility following a natural hazard event. An Assessment of the Provision of Vaping Products by UK Stop Smoking Services Using Data From Freedom of Information Requests.

Introduction Cigarette smoking is the leading cause of preventable death and disease and arises due to prolonged and repeated inhalational exposure to chemical toxicants found in cigarette smoke. Within this context, vaping products, also termed e‑cigarettes or electronic nicotine delivery systems, have been positioned by public health bodies as being substantially less harmful than combustible cigarettes. Furthermore, evidence also suggests that vaping products may be more effective in supporting smoking cessation than traditional support such as nicotine replacement therapy. The UK National
