Complete response of glottic cancer to intra-arterial infusion chemotherapy combined with radiotherapy: A report of 4 cases.

Surgical resection is recommended for advanced-stage, resectable glottic cancer. However, total laryngectomy results in the loss of vocal function and reduces patients' quality of life. At our institution, patients with cT3N0M0 stage III resectable glottic cancer who wish to preserve their larynx are treated with super-selective cisplatin infusion with concomitant radiotherapy (RADPLAT) to improve local control over systemic chemotherapy. Herein, we present 4 patients with glottic cancer who underwent biweekly intra-arterial infusion chemotherapy combined with radiation therapy 3 times. For in

Pterygoid Muscle Necrosis Caused by Radiation and Intra-Arterial Cisplatin Infusion Chemotherapy (RADPLAT): A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Radiation and intra-arterial cisplatin infusion chemotherapy (RADPLAT) for advanced maxillary sinus cancer has accumulated evidence as a treatment with fewer complications and better 5-year survival rates. In this study, we report a case in which pterygoid muscle necrosis occurred 6 months following RADPLAT treatment for maxillary sinus cancer. CASE PRESENTATION: The 45-year-old woman had a long history of taking immunosuppressants against rheumatoid arthritis (RA) prior to treatment. Although achieving complete response (CR) to RADPLAT, the patient developed trismus (1 fingerbr

Comparative Study of Vasodilatation After Intra-arterial Nicardipine or Dantrolene Infusion in Animal Model of Cerebral Vasospasm.

PURPOSE: Intra-arterial (IA) infusion of calcium channel blockers (CCBs) has been widely applied in treating medically refractory vasospasm; however, surprisingly little is known regarding their vasodilatory duration. This study was undertaken to compare attributes of nicardipine and dantrolene, focusing on efficacy and capacity for sustained vasodilation. METHODS: In New Zealand white rabbits (N = 22), vasospasm was individually provoked through experimentally induced subarachnoid hemorrhage and confirmed via conventional angiography, grouping animals by IA-infused drug (nicardipine vs. dant

A rare case of cerebral hemorrhage associated with intra-arterial infusion chemotherapy for advanced sphenoid sinus cancer.

Central nervous damage related to intra-arterial infusion chemotherapy (IAC) for head and neck cancer reported to date are cerebral infarction, transient ischemic attack, and neuropathy. There have been no reports of cerebral hemorrhage as an IAC-related complication for head and neck cancer. Authors report a case that underwent intra-arterial infusion chemoradiotherapy for advanced sphenoid sinus cancer which extended to the left cavernous sinus and cranium, subsequently suffered cerebral hemorrhage thought to have been caused by IAC. Treatment should be performed with greater caution when th

Endovascular Selective Intra-Arterial Infusion of Mesenchymal Stem Cells Loaded With Delta-24 in a Canine Model.

BACKGROUND: Delta-24-RGD, an oncolytic adenovirus, shows promise against glioblastoma. To enhance virus delivery, we recently demonstrated that human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells loaded with Delta-24-RGD (hMSC-D24) can eradicate glioblastomas in mouse models. There are no studies examining the safety of endovascular selective intra-arterial (ESIA) infusions of MSC-D24 in large animals simulating human clinical situations. OBJECTIVE: To perform canine preclinical studies testing the feasibility and safety of delivering increasing doses of hMSCs-D24 via ESIA infusions. METHODS: E

Phenotype Shifting in Astrocytes Account for Benefits of Intra-Arterial Selective Cooling Infusion in Hypertensive Rats of Ischemic Stroke.

The translational failure of neuroprotective therapies in stroke may be influenced by the mismatch of existing comorbidities between animal models and patients. Previous studies found that single-target neuroprotective agents reduced infarction in Sprague-Dawley but not in spontaneously hypertensive rats. It is of great interest to explore whether multi-target neuroprotectants and stroke models with comorbidities should be used in further translational researches. Ischemic stroke was induced in normotensive or hypertensive rats by 90- or 120-min middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) and repe

Coil herniation following intra-arterial verapamil infusion for the treatment of cerebral vasospasm: Case report and literature review.

Complications associated with intra-arterial infusion of vasodilator agents for the treatment of vasospasm associated with a ruptured cerebral aneurysm are extremely rare. We present the case of a patient who developed left lower extremity monoplegia following intra-arterial infusion of verapamil for treatment of diffuse cerebral vasospasm, 6 days after initially undergoing treatment of a ruptured right A1-2 junction aneurysm. A repeat angiogram following this intra-arterial vasodilator treatment demonstrated a coil loop which had herniated into the right A2 artery. Herein, we describe a previ
