The objective of this study is to identify potential insect species comparing with commonly used protein sources based on efficiency of the in vitro digestibility on dry matter (DMd), organic matter (OMd) and crude protein (CPd) in broiler chickens, black-meat chickens (Native breed) and quails. Each of gastric mucosa, pancreas and duodenal mucosa were obtained from proventriculus, pancreas and duodenum, respectively. Crude digestive enzyme extracts (CTE) were extracted from these organs to perform in vitro digestibility. Eighteen insect samples and six commonly used protein sources were serve

Virus-like particles (VLPs) can be produced via the expression of virus surface proteins that self-assemble into particulate structures in recombinant protein expression systems. Expression of the DNA fragment encoding the Japanese encephalitis (JE) virus prM signal peptide, the precursor (prM) of the viral membrane protein (M), and the envelope glycoprotein (E) allows the production of a secretory form of VLPs. Expression systems that use lepidopteran insect cells, such as the baculovirus-insect cell system and stably transformed insect cells, can be used for the efficient production of JE VL

Cuticular penetration of lipid soluble substances in Triatoma infestans is very poor (less than 1% in 24 hr), while the respiratory route is particularly efficient (28% in 5 min). Accordingly, several noxious gases killed the insect at short periods of time. CH3Br and SO2 were particularly effective and they also evidenced ovicide action. With the former compound this effect is also observed at low concentrations. The CH3Br hydrolysis products or its metabolites were not similarly effective, while other methylating agent, diazomethane, was very active. The irreversible binding of 14CH3Br to pr

Plant latex and other exudates are saps that are exuded from the points of plant damage caused either mechanically or by insect herbivory. Although many (ca. 10%) of plant species exude latex or exudates, and although the defensive roles of plant latex against herbivorous insects have long been suggested by several studies, the detailed roles and functions of various latex ingredients, proteins and chemicals, in anti-herbivore plant defenses have not been well documented despite the wide occurrence of latex in the plant kingdom. Recently, however, substantial progress has been made. Several la

A classification for crystal protein genes of Bacillus thuringiensis is presented. Criteria used are the insecticidal spectra and the amino acid sequences of the encoded proteins. Fourteen genes are distinguished, encoding proteins active against either Lepidoptera (cryI), Lepidoptera and Diptera (cryII), Coleoptera (cryIII), or Diptera (cryIV). One gene, cytA, encodes a general cytolytic protein and shows no structural similarities with the other genes. Toxicity studies with single purified proteins demonstrated that every described crystal protein is characterized by a highly specific, and s

The speedy growth of population and continued deterioration of the environment put the world under not completely relying on conventional protein sources. The study of alternative proteins has emerged as a transformative avenue in addressing the growing demand for sustainable food sources amidst environmental, economic, and health challenges. Thus, it has remained the focus of many academics and the industry for research into the possibility of using plants, algae, fungi, and insect-based proteins, which may be more viable, inexpensive, and friendly to the environment. The glycinin, beta-congl

The cDNA encoding the E and NS1 proteins of the yellow fever virus (YFV) was expressed in Spodoptera frugiperda cells via the recombinant baculovirus Ac-E. NS1 as a gp100 precursor which was cleaved to generate the recombinant proteins E and NS1 similar in size, folding and antigenicity to the authentic ones. Recombinant protein E exhibited immunodominant epitopes as judged by its reactivity with YFV-neutralizing MAbs. Using the Triton X-114 phase separation system, authentic and recombinant E proteins as well as the gp100 precursor exhibited hydrophobic properties similar to those of integral

When expressed in Spodoptera frugiperda cells by a baculovirus vector, the hemagglutinin of fowl plague virus has been found to contain palmitic acid in covalent hydroxylamine-sensitive linkage, indicating that these cells have the capacity to acylate foreign proteins at cysteine residues. Centrifugation on sucrose density gradients and immune precipitation with conformation-specific antibodies were used to compare trimerization of the hemagglutinin in insect cells and in fowl plague virus-infected MDCK cells. Trimerization of the hemagglutinin was incomplete in insect cells, and the kinetics

Lepidopterism is the term used to describe the aggregate adverse medical effects resulting from contact with adult or larval forms of butterflies and moths. Histamine, histamine-releasing substances, kinin activators, and other as yet undefined proteins are responsible for cutaneous, cardiovascular, neurologic, and constitutional signs and symptoms of lepidopterism. Insect venom is likely injected into the skin through specialized caterpillar hairs when contact occurs with the insect (or vegetation laden with insect debris). Mild cases of lepidopterism will resolve spontaneously; systemic cort

Trypanosoma brucei, the causative agent of human and animal African trypanosomiasis, cycles between a mammalian host and a tsetse fly vector. The parasite undergoes huge changes in morphology and metabolism during adaptation to each host environment. These changes are reflected in the different transcriptomes of parasites living in each host. However, it remains unclear whether chromatin-interacting proteins help mediate these changes. Bromodomain proteins localize to transcription start sites in bloodstream parasites, but whether the localization of bromodomain proteins changes as parasites d

BACKGROUND: The spider-venom peptide ω-hexatoxin-Hv1a (Hv1a) targets insect voltage-gated calcium channels, acting directly at sites within the central nervous system. It is potently insecticidal when injected into a wide variety of insect pests, but it has limited oral toxicity. We examined the ability of snowdrop lectin (GNA), which is capable of traversing the insect gut epithelium, to act as a "carrier" in order to enhance the oral activity of Hv1a.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: A synthetic Hv1a/GNA fusion protein was produced by recombinant expression in the yeast Pichia pastoris. When

Iron-sulfur clusters are a class of functionally diverse protein cofactors. In recent years, significant progress has been made in insect research on iron-sulfur clusters, revealing that they serve as a core molecular hub that integrate multiple physiological processes. This review systematically summarizes the structural characteristics and biosynthetic pathways of iron-sulfur clusters, with an emphasis on insect-specific features in the stability of iron-sulfur cluster assembly proteins, cluster transfer mechanisms, and functional differentiation of ferredoxins. On this basis, it further elu

With the advance of metatranscriptomic sequencing, an increasing number of symbiotic viruses have been recognized in insects. These insect symbiotic viruses not only modulate key aspects of insect biology, including physiology, fecundity, development, and behavior, but also influence the vector competence of arthropods for transmitting arboviruses. The majority of such vectors belong to the orders Hemiptera and Diptera, which transmit a wide spectrum of plant and animal arboviruses. Although insect symbiotic viruses usually replicate exclusively within insect cells, several symbiotic viruses h

Alternative foods have emerged as one of the hot research topics aiming at alleviating food shortage. Insects are one of the alternative foods due to their rich nutrients. Processing is a critical step to develop insect foods, while there is a lack of comprehensive reviews to summarize the main studies. This review aims to demonstrate different processing methods in terms of their impact on insect nutrition and their potential risks. Heat treatments such as boiling and blanching show a negative effect on insect nutrition, but essential to assure food safety. Insects treated by high-pressure hy

Chemosensory membrane proteins, including odorant receptors (ORs), ionotropic receptors (IRs), gustatory receptors (GRs) and sensory neurone membrane proteins (SNMPs), are supposed to be crucial macromolecules in the insect olfactory signal transduction pathway. The alfalfa plant bug Adelphocoris lineolatus (Goeze) (Hemiptera: Miridae) is highly attracted to high-nitrogen or flowering plants and destroys many important agricultural crops. We assembled the antennal transcriptome of A. lineolatus using Illumina sequencing technology and identified a total of 108 transcripts encoding chemosensory

Insect chitinase 5 (Cht5), a well-characterized enzyme found in the molting fluid and/or integument, is classified as a group I chitinase and is usually encoded by a single gene. In this study, a Cht5 gene cluster consisting of five different chitinase-like genes (AgCht5-1, AgCht5-2, AgCht5-3, AgCht5-4 and AgCht5-5) was identified by a bioinformatics search of the genome of Anopheles gambiae. The gene models were confirmed by cloning and sequencing of the corresponding cDNAs and gene expression profiles during insect development were determined. All of these genes are found in a single cluster

All over the world, a large proportion of the population consume insects as part of their diet. In Western countries, however, the consumption of insects is perceived as a negative phenomenon. The consumption of insects worldwide can be considered in two ways: on the one hand, as a source of protein in countries affected by hunger, while, on the other, as an alternative protein in highly-developed regions, in response to the need for implementing policies of sustainable development. This review focused on both the regulations concerning the production and marketing of insects in Europe and the
