Isolation and identification of mosquito repellents inArtemisia vulgaris.

The mugwortArtemisia vulgaris L. (Compositae: Anthemideae) contains insect repellents which can be released from the plant tissues by combustion. Work was carried out to isolate and identify the repellent compounds. The dried, pulverized whole plants were steam-distilled to give a repellent essential oil which was fractionated by column chromatography. Active fractions were analyzed by capillary GC and by combined GC-MS. A number of compounds, mainly monoterpenoids, were identified. When tested as repellents against the yellow fever mosquitoAedes aegypti L. (Diptera: Culicidae), (±)-linalool,

Repellency of Eucalyptol and DEET Against Triatoma infestans, a Chagas Disease Vector: A Proof-of-Concept Study Under a Human Odor Background.

Triatomines are vectors of Chagas disease. Control of Triatoma infestans, one of its main vectors, relies largely on the use of pyrethroid insecticides. However, due to resistance to them as well as environmental concerns, alternative control strategies are required. Here, we evaluated the volatile repellent activity of eucalyptol, carvacrol, carvone, and DEET (N, N-diethyl-3-methylbenzamide) under conditions that prevented the contact of the insects with the compounds, and under a human odor background, providing a realistic assessment of repellency for human protection. Importantly, eucalypt

Evaluating repellence properties of a catnip essential oil-based mosquito repellent using the human landing catch method in Eastern Uganda.

Mosquitoes (Diperta: Culidae) act as vectors for several diseases, including malaria, dengue fever and yellow fever. Mosquito repellents represent one of the primary measures used to reduce the risk of these diseases in humans by reducing mosquito landing and biting events. Nepetalactone, a natural insect repellent primarily found in the essential oil of catnip (Lamiaceae; Nepeta cataria), has established mosquito repellence properties, but has not been widely exploited as a mosquito repellent in malaria-endemic regions such as Sub-Saharan Africa. Here, we evaluated the potential of a locally

Allium sativum, Rosmarinus officinalis, and Salvia officinalis Essential Oils: A Spiced Shield against Blowflies.

Blowflies are known vectors of many foodborne pathogens and unintentional human ingestion of maggots by meat consumption may lead to intestinal myiasis. In fact, the control of insect pests is an important aspect of industrial and home-made food processing and blowflies (Diptera: Calliphoridae), which are among the most important pests involved in the damage of meat products. Most spices, largely used in food preparations and industry, contain essential oils that are toxic and repellent against insects and exert antimicrobial activity. In this study, we assessed the electro-antennographic resp

Odor repellency and neuronal responses of commercial products towards Anopheles mosquitoes.

BACKGROUND: The bites from infected female Anopheles mosquitoes lead to hundreds of thousands of deaths annually. To find a human, mosquitoes rely on their keen sense of smell. Repellents are chemicals that can target a mosquito's chemosensory senses. Therefore, targeting olfaction using repellents can be an effective way to prevent their attraction to humans and subsequent biting. However, the precise mechanisms underlying the mode of action for most commonly used repellents is surprisingly not well known. Recent evidence suggests that commonly used insect repellents target Anopheles mosquito

The Discovery of Potential Repellent Compounds for Zeugodacus cucuribitae (Coquillett) from Six Non-Favored Hosts.

Zeugodacus cucuribitae (Coquillett) (Z. cucuribitae) is a global extremely invasive quarantine pest which has a wide host range of fruits and vegetables. At present, there are a few control measures for Z. cucuribitae, and deltamethrin and avermectin are commonly used. Among the hosts of Z. cucuribitae, Luffa acutangular, Luffa cylindrica, Sechium edule, Brassica oleracea var. botrytis, Musa nana, and Fragaria × ananassa are non-favored hosts. However, it is still not clear why these hosts are non-favored and whether there are any repellent components of Z. cucuribitae in these hosts. In this

Promising Aedes aegypti repellent chemotypes identified through integrated QSAR, virtual screening, synthesis, and bioassay.

Molecular field topology analysis, scaffold hopping, and molecular docking were used as complementary computational tools for the design of repellents for Aedes aegypti, the insect vector for yellow fever, chikungunya, and dengue fever. A large number of analogues were evaluated by virtual screening with Glide molecular docking software. This produced several dozen hits that were either synthesized or procured from commercial sources. Analysis of these compounds by a repellent bioassay resulted in a few highly active chemicals (in terms of minimum effective dosage) as viable candidates for fur

Repellence or attraction: secondary metabolites in pepper mediate attraction and defense against Spodoptera litura.

BACKGROUND: Resistance to insect pests is an important self-defense characteristic of pepper plants. However, the resistance of different pepper cultivars to Spodoptera litura larvae, one of the main insect pest species on pepper, is not well understood. RESULTS: Among seven pepper cultivars evaluated, cayenne pepper 'FXBX' showed the highest repellency to third instar S. litura larvae, Chao tian chili pepper 'BLTY2' showed the lowest repellency. Plant volatiles (1-hexene, hexanal, β-ionone, (E,E)-2,6-nonadienal, and methyl salicylate) affected host selection by S. litura. Among these, 1-hexe

Evaluation of repellents for management of ambrosia beetles (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) in nursery production.

BACKGROUND: Ambrosia beetles (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae) are critical pests of ornamental nursery trees, which are attracted to ethanol-emitting stressed trees. The limited efficacy of traditional insecticides for their control calls for alternative management strategies, such as semiochemical repellents. This study assessed the efficacy of multiple experimental repellent formulations across field and semi-field trials to determine their potential for reducing ambrosia beetle captures and attacks under different environmental and application conditions. RESULTS: Beetle Guard #2 an

[Malaria prevention without drugs].

One can prevent malaria without antimalaria drug by avoiding insect bites through physical and chemical means. Because of the growing problems with the drugs used for malaria prophylaxis such as resistance and side effects, prevention without drugs is becoming increasingly important again. Repellents are substances applied to the skin which effectively prevent mosquitoes from biting. The most efficient and best documented repellents are diethyl-m-toluamide (DEET) and dimethylphthalate (DMP). Insecticides have a direct toxic effect on the nervous system of the arthropods. Nowadays, mainly synth

Chiggers.

Chigger infestations are caused by mite larvae that feed on the host's epidermal cells. The combination of digestive enzymes secreted by the mite and the immune response of the host produces the typical "chigger bite." Intense pruritus is the usual response, but more severe reactions and chigger-borne disease may also occur. Treatment is primarily symptomatic and consists of antipruritics, antihistamines and steroids. Chigger infestation may be minimized by the use of proper clothing and insect repellents.

Chain length influences the repellency of natural aliphatic lactones against Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae).

Aedes aegypti (L.) is a widely distributed mosquito and the primary vector of arboviruses such as dengue. Its obligatory hematophagy, high environmental adaptability, and close association with humans make it a major public health challenge. Natural repellents with low environmental impact are currently being evaluated in experiments as potential complementary tools for managing Ae. aegypti. The development of environmentally compatible repellents has become a priority in vector control strategies. Lactones are cyclic esters naturally present in various foods and fragrances and have been assoc

Repellent activity against Aedes aegypti and metabolomic profiling of Myrica gale L. essential oils from Irish boglands.

Bog myrtle (Myrica gale L.) is an ethnobotanically significant bogland plant with historic use as an insect repellent. Essential oils, hydro-distilled from bog myrtle leaves and fruits collected from four locations in Ireland, were analysed by GC-MS and tested for repellence against Aedes aegypti, the yellow fever mosquito. Contact (arm-in-cage) and spatial (Y-tube olfactometer) repellence assays were used. Commercial essential oils from M. gale, Myrtus communis and Syzygium aromaticum (clove oil) were also tested. The most effective bog myrtle essential oil in both assays was a Clevenger-hydr

Role of methyl salicylate on oviposition deterrence in Arabidopsis thaliana.

Plants attacked by herbivores have evolved different strategies that fend off their enemies. Insect eggs deposited on leaves have been shown to inhibit further oviposition through visual or chemical cues. In some plant species, the volatile methyl salicylate (MeSA) repels gravid insects but whether it plays the same role in the model species Arabidopsis thaliana is currently unknown. Here we showed that Pieris brassicae butterflies laid fewer eggs on Arabidopsis plants that were next to a MeSA dispenser or on plants with constitutively high MeSA emission than on control plants. Surprisingly, t
