Long-lasting insecticidal mosquito nets (LLIMNs) are needed for malaria vector control. However, their distribution is not yet optimal in sub-Saharan regions. According to projections, COVID-19 pandemic will further delay the distribution of LLIMNs. In Niger, a distribution campaign of LLIMNs with a multi-sectoral approach (state-partner-civil society) was organized in compliance with barrier measures for preventing transmission of COVID-19. A door-to-door strategy was chosen to implement this campaign, in order to avoid entry into confined spaces and to engage community. A total of 13,994,681

BACKGROUND: Mosquitoes are vectors for many diseases such as malaria. Insecticide-treated bed nets and indoor residual spraying of insecticides are the principal malaria vector control tools used to prevent malaria in the tropics. Other interventions aim at reducing man-vector contact. For example, house screening provides additive or synergistic effects to other implemented measures. We used commercial screen materials made of polyester, polyethylene or polypropylene to design novel mosquito screens that provide remarkable additional benefits to those commonly used in house screening. A recent durability study has revealed that Yahe LN® insecticide-treated nets (ITNs; Fujian Yamei Industry & Trade Co., LTD, Fuzhou, China) distributed in Papua New Guinea (PNG) in 2021 did not retain their insecticidal efficacy after several months post-distribution. Insecticide-treated nets are frequently shipped and stored in containers where they are exposed to elevated temperatures. When used in the tropics, ITNs may continue to be exposed to high ambient temperatures. The aim for the present study is to better understand the potential impact of elevated temperature during transport and s

House screening (HS) of doors, eaves, and windows using wire-mesh has demonstrated potential in the integrated vector management of malaria. However, limited epidemiological data are available to guide its implementation across different ecological settings. In a 16-month randomized controlled trial (follow-up period) conducted across three agroecological areas (dry mountain, plateau highland, and semi-arid) in Jabi Tehnan district, northwestern Ethiopia, treatment houses were equipped with HS combined with insecticide-treated nets (ITNs), while control houses received ITNs only. BACKGROUND: The performance of two piperonyl butoxide (PBO-synergist) insecticide-treated net (ITN) brands, PermaNet® 3.0 and Olyset® Plus, were evaluated under field conditions in two neighboring districts in Sierra Leone over 36 months to estimate median ITN survival, understand insecticidal efficacy, and identify factors influencing ITN durability. This assessment can help guide future PBO-synergist ITN procurement and replacement strategies.
METHODS: This prospective study tracked 370 households and 652 campaign-distributed ITNs from 2020, followed annually for 36 months. Districts were p

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends mass distribution of insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) to prevent malaria transmission. Unfortunately, resistance to pyrethroids affects the efficacy of standard ITNs. To overcome this resistance and continue to protect the population, the WHO has recommended new types of ITNs that combine a pyrethroid insecticide with either a synergist (PBO) or a second insecticide, such as chlorfenapyr. This study examines the baseline characteristics of malaria vectors prior to the distribution of three types of insecticide-treated nets as part of a

BACKGROUND: Non-inferiority trials are recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) to demonstrate that health products show comparable efficacy to that of existing standard of care. As part of the WHO Global Malaria Programme (GMP) process of assessment of malaria vector control products, a second-in-class insecticide-treated net (ITN) must be shown to be non-inferior to a first-in-class product based on mosquito mortality. The public health impact of the first-in-class pyrethroid-piperonyl butoxide (PBO) ITN, Olyset® Plus, has been demonstrated in epidemiological trials in areas with i

BACKGROUND: Pyrethroid-PBO nets were conditionally recommended for control of malaria transmitted by mosquitoes with oxidase-based pyrethroid-resistance based on epidemiological evidence of additional protective effect with Olyset Plus compared to a pyrethroid-only net (Olyset Net). Entomological studies can be used to assess the comparative performance of other brands of pyrethroid-PBO ITNs to Olyset Plus.

BACKGROUND: Riverine tsetse (Glossina spp.) transmit Trypanosoma brucei gambiense which causes Gambian Human African Trypanosomiasis. Tiny Targets were developed for cost-effective riverine tsetse control, and comprise panels of insecticide-treated blue polyester fabric and black net that attract and kill tsetse. Versus typical blue polyesters, two putatively more attractive fabrics have been developed: Vestergaard ZeroFly blue, and violet. Violet was most attractive to savannah tsetse using large targets, but neither fabric has been tested for riverine tsetse using Tiny Targets.

BACKGROUND: In Zambia and other sub-Saharan African countries affected by ongoing malaria transmission, indoor residual spraying (IRS) for malaria prevention has typically been implemented over large areas, e.g., district-wide, and targeted to peri-urban areas. However, there is a recent shift in some countries, including Zambia, towards the adoption of a more strategic and targeted IRS approach, in coordination with increased emphasis on universal coverage of long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) and effective insecticide resistance management. A true targeted approach would deliver IRS to s

In central Nigeria Anopheles mosquitoes transmit malaria and lymphatic filariasis (LF). The strategy used for interrupting LF transmission in this area is annual mass drug administration (MDA) with albendazole and ivermectin, but after 8 years of MDA, entomological evaluations in sentinel villages showed continued low-grade mosquito infection rates of 0.32%. After long-lasting insecticidal net (LLIN) distribution by the national malaria program in late 2010, however, we were no longer able to detect infected vectors over a 24-month period. This is evidence that LLINs are synergistic with MDA i

BACKGROUND: Uganda remains one of the highest malaria burden countries globally, with refugee populations disproportionately affected. While government-led initiatives, such as free distribution of insecticide-treatesd nets (ITNs) and indoor residual spraying, are key to the vector control response, limited data exist on the role of retail markets in providing complementary mosquito control products (MCPs) in refugee settings.
METHODS: As part of the Advancing Evidence for the Global Implementation of Spatial Repellents project, we conducted a retail audit across 61 refugee and host community

BACKGROUND: Studies evaluating the attrition, physical and insecticidal durability of dual active ingredient (AI) insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) are essential for making programmatic decisions regarding their deployment. We performed a prospective study embedded in a cluster randomised controlled trial (cRCT) to evaluate the attrition, fabric integrity and insecticidal durability of Interceptor® G2 (alpha-cypermethrin-chlorfenapyr) and Royal Guard® (alpha-cypermethrin-pyriproxyfen), compared to Interceptor® (alpha-cypermethrin) in Benin.

BACKGROUND: National Malaria Programmes (NMPs) monitor the durability of insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) to inform procurement and replacement decisions. This is crucial for new dual active ingredients (AI) ITNs, for which less data is available. Pyrethroid-only ITN (Interceptor®) and dual AI (Interceptor® G2, and PermaNet® 3.0) ITNs were assessed across three health districts over 36 months in southern Burkina Faso to estimate median ITN survival, insecticidal efficacy, and to identify factors contributing to field ITN longevity.
METHODS: Durability was monitored through a prospective study

BACKGROUND: Insecticidal mosquito-proof netting screens could combine the best features of insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) and indoor residual spraying (IRS), the two most important front line vector control interventions in Africa today, and also overcome the most important limitations of these methods. This study engaged members of a rural Tanzanian community in developing and evaluating simple, affordable and scalable procedures for installing readily available screening materials on eave gaps and windows of their own houses, and then treating those screens with a widely used IRS formulatio

BACKGROUND: While the overall burden of malaria is still high, the global technical strategy for malaria advocates for two sets of interventions: vector control-based prevention and diagnosis and prompt effective treatment of malaria cases. This study aimed to assess the performance of malaria interventions on malaria infection and anaemia in irrigated areas in Sudan.
METHODS: Based on the Sudan 2016 national malaria indicator survey, data for two states (Gezira and Sennar), characterized by large-irrigated schemes, were analysed. Four community-level malaria interventions were used as contex

Nocturnally periodic bancroftian filariasis is maintained by three mainly endophilic vectors in East Africa: Culex quinquefasciatus, Anopheles funestus and the An. gambiae complex. Permethrin-impregnated bednets provide considerable protection against these mosquitoes, but the species respond differently. The degree of protection conferred by treated bednets was determined in Kenyan communities where all three vectors actively transmit Wuchereria bancrofti. The annual transmission potential in the communities (i.e. an estimate of the number of human infective, third-stage larvae of W. bancroft

The cost of permethrin-treated bednets (50% EC; 0.2 g/m2, 2 rounds per year) was compared to the cost of residual spraying with lambdacyhalothrin 10% WP (0.03 g/m2, once yearly) in Hoa Binh, a mountainous province in northern Vietnam. Calculations of the amounts of insecticides needed were based on national guidelines, on data from a cross-sectional survey and on district activity reports. The actual cost of insecticide required per person per year was lower for impregnation (US$ 0.26) than for spraying (US$ 0.36), but the difference was smaller than expected. The total cost for impregnated be

BACKGROUND: Insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) provide protection against malaria vectors through their insecticidal action and as a physical barrier. However, insecticide resistance in malaria vectors has diminished their efficacy, threatening future malaria control. To reinforce ITNs' effectiveness, evaluating non-insecticide-based tools in an integrated control approach is worthwhile. In the present study, a mosquito collection technique, the Host Decoy Trap (HDT), was coupled with standard ITNs as a complementary intervention, and its effectiveness against insecticide-resistant Anopheles gamb

BACKGROUND: Insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) incorporating pyrethroids with piperonyl butoxide (PBO) have demonstrated enhanced effectiveness against malaria transmitted by pyrethroid-resistant vectors compared with standard pyrethroid-only ITNs. To sustain progress in malaria prevention, a broader portfolio of effective pyrethroid-PBO nets is required to promote market diversity and strengthen supply resilience. In this study, we evaluated the entomological efficacy and wash durability of Vector Guard®, a novel mosaic alpha-cypermethrin-PBO ITN, against pyrethroid-resistant Anopheles gambiae s
