Connections between the internal and the external capsules and the globus pallidus in the sheep: A dichromate stain X-ray microtomographic study.

Sheep are recognized as useful species for translational neurodegeneration research, in particular for the study of Huntington disease. There is a lack of information regarding the detailed anatomy and connections of the basal ganglia of sheep, in normal myeloarchitectonics and in tract-tracing studies. In this work, the organization of the corticostriatal projections at the level of the putamen and globus pallidus (GP) are explored. For the first time, the myeloarchitectonic pattern of connections between the internal (IC) and the external (EC) capsules with the GP have been investigated in t

Cryptococcus gattii Capsule Blocks Surface Recognition Required for Dendritic Cell Maturation Independent of Internalization and Antigen Processing.

Cryptococcus gattii is an emerging fungal pathogen on the west coast of Canada and the United States that causes a potentially fatal infection in otherwise healthy individuals. In previous investigations of the mechanisms by which C. gattii might subvert cell-mediated immunity, we found that C. gattii failed to induce dendritic cell (DC) maturation, leading to defective T cell responses. However, the virulence factor and the mechanisms of evasion of DC maturation remain unknown. The cryptococcal polysaccharide capsule is a leading candidate because of its antiphagocytic properties. Capsule of Streptococcus equi subsp. zooepidemicus hampers the adherence and invasion of epithelial and endothelial cells and is attenuated during internalization.

Direct interaction between pathogens and host cells often is a prerequisite for colonization, infection and dissemination. Regulated production of capsular polysaccharide (CPS), which is made of hyaluronic acid, is essential for the pathogenicity of Streptococcus equi subsp. Zooepidemicus (SEZ). Here, we constructed a CPS-deleted mutant and analyzed it along with the parental wild-type strain in attachment and invasion of mammalian epithelial and endothelial cell lines. The CPS-deleted mutant exhibited significant increase in adherence and invasion by several orders of magnitude compared with

Case Report: Deep Brain Stimulation to the Ventral Internal Capsule/Ventral Striatum Induces Repeated Transient Episodes of Voltage-Dependent Tourette-Like Behaviors.

Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) is an invasive device-based neuromodulation technique that allows the therapeutic direct stimulation of subcortical and deep cortical structures following the surgical placement of stimulating electrodes. DBS is approved by the U.S. Federal Drug Administration for the treatment of movement disorders and obsessive-compulsive disorder, while new indications, including Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), are in experimental development. We report the case of a patient with MDD who received DBS to the ventral internal capsule and ventral striatum bilaterally and presented

Treatment of First-Time Traumatic Anterior Dislocation of the Sternoclavicular Joint With Surgical Repair of the Anterior Capsule Augmented With Internal Bracing.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic anterior dislocations of the sternoclavicular joint (SCJ) are rare. Although they can usually be treated by a closed reduction, the reported subsequent recurrence rate is 50%. PURPOSE: To determine whether further instability after first-time traumatic anterior dislocation would be prevented by a minimally invasive open repair of the anterior SCJ capsule, augmented with internal bracing. STUDY DESIGN: Case series; Level of evidence, 4. METHODS: Open repair of the anterior SCJ capsule was completed on a series of patients who had sustained a first-time traumatic anterio

Deep Brain Stimulation of the Nucleus Accumbens, Ventral Striatum, or Internal Capsule Targets for Medication-Resistant Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: A Multicenter Study.

BACKGROUND: Deep brain stimulation of the nucleus accumbens, ventral striatum, or internal capsule region has shown a 45%-60% response rate in adults with severe treatment-refractory obsessive-compulsive disorder, regardless of which target is used. We sought to improve the effectiveness of deep brain stimulation by placing the electrode along a trajectory including these 3 targets, enabling a change of stimulation site depending on the patient's response. METHODS: This study used the medical records of 14 patients from 4 different Spanish institutions: 7 from the Hospital Universitario La Pr

Evidence for fractional anisotropy and mean diffusivity white matter abnormalities in the internal capsule and cingulum in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder.

BACKGROUND: There is evidence to suggest that obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is associated with structural abnormalities in cortico-striato-thalamic circuits, yet the extent of white matter abnormalities is not well established. In this study, we used diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) to examine white matter integrity in specific regions of interest (ROIs) in patients with OCD. METHODS: Patients with OCD and sex-, age- and IQ-matched healthy controls underwent DTI. The primary objective was to explore whether patients with OCD had white matter abnormalities in the anterior limb of the inter

Abnormal brain MRI signals in the splenium of the corpus callosum, basal ganglia and internal capsule in a suspected case with tuberculous meningitis.

A 34-year-old man visited the hospital with chief complaints of headache, fever, and disturbance of consciousness. In view of his clinical condition, the course of the disease, and results of examination, he was diagnosed with viral meningitis and treated accordingly. However, his clinical condition worsened, and MRI revealed abnormal signals in the splenium of the corpus callosum, in the basal ganglia and in the internal capsule, as well as the presence of severe inflammation in the base of the brain. Since he had a high ADA level in the cerebrospinal fluid and was consequently suspected to h

Case of Pure Agraphia in Kana and Romaji Without Sensorimotor Deficits After a Small Infarct of the Posterior Limb of the Internal Capsule.

OBJECTIVES: Infarctions of the posterior limb of the internal capsule (plIC) typically cause contralateral motor deficits. Cases with pure agraphia, writing impairments alone, are rare. We present a case of agraphia as the sole symptom after a small infarction in the anterior portion of the left plIC, which facilitates understanding of the interplay between the subcortical and cortical networks controlling writing. METHODS: This study evaluated a 62-year-old right-handed Japanese man presenting with difficulties in typing and writing. In addition to neuropsychological assessments, diffusion t

The Posterior Limb of the Internal Capsule as the Subcortical Transitional Zone of the Anterior and Posterior Circulations: Insights from Human 7T MRI.

BACKGROUND: In patients with cerebral infarction, identifying the distribution of infarction and the relevant artery is essential for ascertaining the underlying vascular pathophysiological mechanisms and preventing subsequent stroke. However, visualization of the basal perforating arteries (BPAs) has had limited success, and simultaneous viewing of background anatomical structures has only rarely been attempted in living human brains. Our study aimed at identifying the BPAs with 7T MRI and evaluating their distribution in the subcortical structures, thereby showing the clinical significance o

The anterosuperior insertion of the temporomandibular joint capsule and condylar mobility in joints with and without internal derangement: a double-contrast arthrotomographic investigation.

The insertion of the anterior temporomandibular joint capsule at the temporal bone constitutes an anatomic boundary of the joint. When condylar translation exceeds this site, the joint is classified as hypermobile. In this study, the distance from the apex of the articular eminence to the antero-superior capsule insertion was assessed in double-contrast arthrotomograms from 192 joints with and without disc displacement. Maximum condylar translation was also measured. The insertion point of the antero-superior capsule was, on the average, located 4.4 mm (SD, 1.7 mm) anterior to the apex of the

Tractographic description of major subcortical projection pathways passing the anterior limb of the internal capsule. Corticopetal organization of networks relevant for psychiatric disorders.

BACKGROUND: Major depression (MD) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) are psychiatric diseases with a huge impact on individual well-being. Despite optimal treatment regiments a subgroup of patients remains treatment resistant and stereotactic surgery (stereotactic lesion surgery, SLS or Deep Brain Stimulation, DBS) might be an option. Recent research has described four networks related to MD and OCD (affect, reward, cognitive control, default network) but only on a cortical and the adjacent sub-cortical level. Despite the enormous impact of comparative neuroanatomy, animal science and ste

Isolated motor neglect following infarction of the posterior limb of the right internal capsule: a case study with diffusion tensor imaging-based tractography.

Motor neglect is an impairment in the ability to initiate movement not attributable to muscle weakness. The neural network of this syndrome is not precisely defined. We present the diffusion tensor imaging (DTI)-base tractography findings in an acute stroke patient presenting with isolated motor neglect following infarction in the posterior limb of the internal capsule within the anterior choroidal artery territory. A left-handed 17-year-old woman presented with an acute onset of motor neglect of her left arm. Motor tasks performed with the affected limb were awkward; however, the tasks could

Transient Manic-like Episode Following Bilateral Deep Brain Stimulation of the Nucleus Accumbens and the Internal Capsule in a Patient With Tourette Syndrome.

Objective.  Deep brain stimulation (DBS) increasingly attracts attention as a potential treatment of mental disorders. Beside depression and obsessive-compulsive disorders, DBS has already been shown to be beneficial for Tourette syndrome (TS). Clinical Presentation/Method.  The authors report on the outcome of a patient with treatment-resistant TS who underwent bilateral DBS of the nucleus accumbens and the internal capsule. Results.  Within the 10-month follow-up, a substantial reduction of tics has been observed. Yet, as a side-effect of DBS, the patient developed a transient manic-like epi

Acute damage to the posterior limb of the internal capsule on diffusion tensor tractography as an early imaging predictor of motor outcome after stroke.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Early prediction of motor outcome is of interest in stroke management. We aimed to determine whether lesion location at DTT is predictive of motor outcome after acute stroke and whether this information improves the predictive accuracy of the clinical scores. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We evaluated 60 consecutive patients within 12 hours of middle cerebral artery stroke onset. We used DTT to evaluate CST involvement in the motor cortex and premotor cortex, centrum semiovale, corona radiata, and PLIC and in combinations of these regions at admission, at day 3, and at day 30

Internal Architecture of a 3D-Printed Ti-6Al-4V Capsule and Preliminary FEM Simulation of Diffusion: CAD-Informed Modeling with Qualitative Micro-CT Characterization.

A central challenge in implantable local-delivery systems is to determine how internal device architecture shapes solute transport before drug-specific loading, release, and biological validation are available. This study examines the reservoir-channel architecture of the previously characterized KTD/KTM Ti-6Al-4V capsule platform and evaluates its effect on diffusion-dominated concentration redistribution in a preliminary finite-element model. Micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) was used for qualitative characterization of the as-fabricated internal architecture, whereas the representative c

[A case of severe COVID-19 infection with multiple brain microbleeds spreading to the ‍subcortical white matter, internal capsule and splenium of the corpus callosum].

A 23-year-old female student was admitted to a local hospital because of consciousness disturbance caused by diabetic ketoacidosis on the 4th day after COVID-19 infection. She was subsequently transferred to our hospital, having developed respiratory failure, acute renal failure and DIC. Although intensive treatment improved her condition, she remained hypoactive. Brain MRI revealed multiple microbleeds (MBs) spreading to the subcortical white matter, internal capsule, splenium of the corpus callosum and brainstem. The WAIS-IV score suggested general attention deficit disorder and mild impairm
