Source monitoring deficits in hallucinating compared to non-hallucinating patients with schizophrenia.

In two source memory tests, hallucinating patients with schizophrenia (N=30), compared to non-hallucinating (N=31), are impaired in recognizing internal self-generated items and misattribute them to an external event. They are not impaired in recognizing events from two internal sources. Results support a selective source-monitoring deficit in the occurrence of auditory hallucinations.

ERPs to stimulus identification in persons with restrained eating behavior.

Restrained eating is an eating behavior in which hunger and satiety are not the only triggers for starting or ending a meal. Rather, cognitive factors control food consumption in these persons. The present study served to investigate cortical stimulus processing in restrained and unrestrained eaters by means of event-related potentials (ERPs). ERPs should differ between these two groups and this difference should vary according to food intake. ERPs were recorded from 20 female restrained and 20 female unrestrained eaters in a word identification task in which food-related and food-unrelated wo

Attributions and adjustment following child sexual and physical abuse.

Individuals who experience child physical orsexual abuse are at greater risk for adjustment problems. However, the heterogeneity of symptomatology observed across individuals following child abuse suggests that outcome is determined by multiplefactors. The authors review literature examining the relationships among childhood physical or sexual abuse, attributions, and adjustment. Implications for application and future research are discussed.

The thrill of victory, the complexity of defeat: self-esteem and people's emotional reactions to success and failure.

Low self-esteem people are assumed to have more severe emotional reactions to failure than are high self-esteem people, but this assumption has not received consistent empirical support. In this article the authors report 2 investigations that found that self-esteem differences of this sort emerge for emotions that directly implicate the self (e.g., pride, humiliation) but not for emotions that do not directly implicate the self (e.g., happiness, unhappiness). Additional evidence suggested that this occurs, in part, because low self-esteem people overgeneralize the negative implications of fai

Recent developments in alcoholism:psychodynamic approaches.

A review of the substance abuse literature in the 1980s focuses on deficits in self-regulating capacities, in self-care functions, and in other vulnerabilities of the self, such as an inappropriate use of defenses and problems in intimacy. Various models which attempt to explain these behaviors are described, as well as techniques of dynamic psychotherapy for substance abuse, which emphasize the building of ego functions and the internalization of self-preservation functions. Commonalities and differences of substance abuse with other intensely driven compulsive behaviors (e.g., pathological g

Relationship between locus of control and performance on the National Board of Medical Examiners, Part I, among black medical students.

Several investigators have recently suggested that nonacademic factors may be particularly important in the performance of minority medical students. This study examined the relationship between the personality variable of locus of control and black medical students' performance on the National Board of Medical Examiners I. Subjects included 50 third- and fourth-year medical students of African-American, Caribbean, and African backgrounds from 4 medical schools. An internal locus of control was correlated with test performance, whereas the more traditional index of the Medical College Admissio

Health locus of control and safety restraint attitudes in a sample of motor vehicle accident victims.

A study was undertaken to determine the health locus of control beliefs and the health promotion and safety restraint use attitudes of a sample of previously injured motor vehicle occupants. Health locus of control was not found to be related to more favorable attitudes toward safety restraint use and restraint use legislation.

Causal attributions, sanctions, and normal mood variations.

The causal-locus hypothesis (CLH) asserts that persons making internal attributions for failure and external attributions for success experience more negative postoutcome moods than persons making the opposite attributions. Three experiments assessed the CLH. Although outcomes consistently affected moods and attributions, attributions did not affect moods. Significant correlations consistent with the CLH were also infrequently obtained. Another theory, the sanctioned-object hypothesis (SOH), was proposed for understanding how causal attributions lead to mood changes. This hypothesis asserts th

Predicting successful weight loss after treatment.

Conducted two 8-week behavioral self-control weight reduction groups to investigate the relationship between locus of control and success at weight reduction (N = 49 female Ss). Mean weight losses were significant at post-treatment and after a 3-month and 18-month follow-up. There was no significant difference in weight loss between internals and externals at post-treatment, but internals maintained a significantly greater weight loss than externals at the follow-ups. These results are discussed with regard to self-control behavior.

Problem-solving skills, locus of control, and the contraceptive effectiveness of young women.

It was proposed that the lack of insight into the risk-taking behavior of many sexually active women who do not want to get pregnant may reflect the lack of an adequate framework from which to investigate the problem. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between contraceptive effectiveness and several cognitive factors. The sample consisted of 155 single women, 15.3-25.7 years of age, from a Planned Parenthood clinic and an abortion clinic. Contraceptive effectiveness, operationally defined as the number of unplanned pregnancies in a woman's history, was significantly and

The Psychology of Esports: A Systematic Literature Review.

Recently, the skill involved in playing and mastering video games has led to the professionalization of the activity in the form of 'esports' (electronic sports). The aim of the present paper was to review the main topics of psychological interest about esports and then to examine the similarities of esports to professional and problem gambling. As a result of a systematic literature search, eight studies were identified that had investigated three topics: (1) the process of becoming an esport player, (2) the characteristics of esport players such as mental skills and motivations, and (3) the

Distress-Related Internalizing Symptoms Interact With Externalizing Symptoms to Predict Alcohol Problems in an Inpatient Adolescent Sample.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Previous research has yielded equivocal findings regarding whether internalizing symptoms are risk factors for adolescent hazardous alcohol use (AU), specifically in the presence of externalizing symptoms. This may be due to the type of internalizing symptoms examined (ie, distress vs fear), and the use of primarily normative rather than clinical samples. Thus, we tested internalizing and externalizing symptom interactions as they relate to adolescent hazardous AU in a high-risk, clinical sample of adolescents. METHODS: Adolescents (N = 101; 66% female; Mage  = 15)

Posttraumatic stress, uncontrollability, and emotional distress tolerance.

BACKGROUND: Although individuals with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) report poor tolerance for distress, the mechanisms underpinning this are unknown. Cognitive models of PTSD propose that appraisals of lacking or losing control impair adaptation to trauma. This study investigated whether avoidance of emotional distress was affected by loss of control in a web-based community sample with and without PTSD symptomatology, expecting that those with PTSD may show more detrimental effects following greater loss of control. METHODS: PTSD-symptomatic (N = 104) and nonsymptomatic (N = 102) part

Causal Learning in Gambling Disorder: Beyond the Illusion of Control.

Causal learning is the ability to progressively incorporate raw information about dependencies between events, or between one's behavior and its outcomes, into beliefs of the causal structure of the world. In spite of the fact that some cognitive biases in gambling disorder can be described as alterations of causal learning involving gambling-relevant cues, behaviors, and outcomes, general causal learning mechanisms in gamblers have not been systematically investigated. In the present study, we compared gambling disorder patients against controls in an instrumental causal learning task. Eviden

Devil in the Details: A Critical Review of "Theoretical Loss".

In their review of Internet gambling studies, Auer and Griffiths (J Gambl Stud 30(4), 879-887, 2014) question the validity of using bet size as an indicator of gambling intensity. Instead, in that review and in a response (Auer and Griffiths, J Gambl Stud 31(3), 921-931, 2015) to a previous comment (Braverman et al., J Gambl Stud 31(2), 359-366, 2015), Auer and Griffiths suggested using "theoretical loss" as a preferable measure of gambling intensity. This comment extends and advances the discussion about measures of gambling intensity. In this paper, we describe previously identified problems

Mother Blame and the Just World Theory in Child Sexual Abuse Cases.

Mothers are blamed for a variety of negative experiences and outcomes of their children, including child sexual abuse (CSA). According to just world hypothesis (JWH), people have a need to view the world as one where there is no such thing as an innocent victim; that is, the world is fair and just. These beliefs predict victim blaming in situations such as sexual abuse, physical abuse, and robbery. However, JWH has not been applied to the examination of mother blame, a situation in which the blame target did not directly experience the traumatic event. We examined this application in two studi

An empirical investigation of theoretical loss and gambling intensity.

Many recent studies of internet gambling-particularly those that have analysed behavioural tracking data-have used variables such 'bet size' and 'number of games played' as proxy measures for 'gambling intensity'. In this paper it is argued that the most stable and reliable measure for 'gambling intensity' is the 'theoretical loss' (a product of total bet size and house advantage). In the long run, the theoretical loss corresponds with the Gross Gaming Revenue generated by commercial gaming operators. For shorter periods of time, theoretical loss is the most stable measure of gambling intensit

Multisystemic therapy (MST) is effective for decreasing or preventing delinquency and other externalizing behaviors and increasing prosocial or adaptive behaviors. The purpose of this project was to review the literature examining the efficacy of MST for other child psychological and health problems reflecting non-externalizing behaviors, specifically difficulties related to child maltreatment, serious psychiatric illness [Serious psychiatric illness was defined throughout the current review paper as the "presence of symptoms of suicidal ideation, homicidal ideation, psychosis, or threat of ha
