Technology access and preferences for remote assessments at Alzheimer's Disease Research Centers.

BACKGROUND: As Alzheimer's disease and related dementias studies incorporate remote assessments, people at higher risk, such as individuals from minority racial and ethnic groups, may be disadvantaged due to imbalances in access. METHODS: Using data from the National Alzheimer's Coordinating Center Uniform Data Set, logistic regression models using generalized estimating equations with a random effect for study site were used to test the association of race and ethnicity, education, and their interactions with technology preferences and internet access. RESULTS: A total of 3,803 participants

Structural Determinants of Telehealth Use Among Patients Presenting to an Urban Safety-Net Emergency Department.

BACKGROUND: Telehealth expanded rapidly during and after the COVID-19 era. However, adoption remains uneven in safety-net populations, where structural barriers may limit use and worsen disparities. OBJECTIVE: To identify structural and healthcare access factors associated with telehealth use among adults presenting to an urban safety-net emergency department (ED) and evaluate whether telehealth use was associated with ED utilization. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional survey of adults presenting to an urban safety-net ED in the Bronx, New York, between July and November 2025. The surve

Internet use and online safety in adults with Williams syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) increasingly have access to the Internet. Whilst Internet access increases opportunities for social connection for individuals with IDD, it also may increase risk of victimisation. Adults with Williams syndrome (WS), who display an extreme pro-social drive to engage with both familiar and unfamiliar people, might be especially vulnerable to online victimisation. This study first explores how often and why individuals with WS use the Internet and social networking sites. Next, the online vulnerability of individuals

Diagnostic Criteria for Problematic Internet Use among U.S. University Students: A Mixed-Methods Evaluation.

Empirical studies have identified increasing rates of problematic Internet use worldwide and a host of related negative consequences. However, researchers disagree as to whether problematic Internet use is a subtype of behavioral addiction. Thus, there are not yet widely accepted and validated diagnostic criteria for problematic Internet use. To address this gap, we used mixed-methods to examine the extent to which signs and symptoms of problematic Internet use mirror DSM-5 diagnostic criteria for substance use disorder, gambling disorder, and Internet gaming disorder. A total of 27 university

Digital connectivity and social wellbeing in a polycrisis setting: longitudinal, nationwide, population-weighted evidence from Myanmar, 2021 to 2024.

BACKGROUND: Digital technologies increasingly mediate social life, yet their relationship with social wellbeing in polycrisis settings where armed conflict, economic collapse, and surveillance coexist remains poorly understood. Nationwide evidence on multiple dimensions of digital connectivity and social wellbeing in active conflict settings remains scarce. Myanmar offers a critical case: rapid pre-2021 digital expansion has given way to recurrent shutdowns and worsening affordability amid conflict since 2021. We aimed to assess associations between multiple dimensions of digital connectivity

Use and satisfaction of the internet in obtaining information on brachial plexus birth palsies and its influence on decision-making.

The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of the Internet on parents regarding decisions for children with brachial plexus birth palsies (BPBP). A power analysis was performed to determine the appropriate sample size needed for estimating proportions in the general BPBP population. At least 100 surveys were needed for appropriate data analysis and 122 surveys were collected (100% response rate). Each participant filled out a 32-item survey on demographics, questions on Internet usage, and the influence of the Internet on care decisions. It is evident that parents commonly access

Generalized pustular psoriasis: Quality and readability of online health information.

Generalized pustular psoriasis (GPP) is a multisystem disease with potentially life-threatening adverse effects. As patients increasingly seek health information online, and as the landscape for GPP changes, the quality of online health information (OHI) becomes progressively more important. This paper is the first of its kind to examine the quality, comprehensiveness and readability of online health information for GPP. Similar to pre-existing studies evaluating OHI, this paper examines 5 key search terms for GPP- 3 medical and 2 laymen. For each search term, the results were evaluated based

Internet-based cognitive behavioral therapy for bulimic eating disorders in a clinical setting: Results from a randomized trial with one-year follow-up.

BACKGROUND: Those who suffer from eating disorders often experience serious impairment in quality of life and the majority never receive treatment. Treatment availability may be increased by implementing methods that demand less resources and are more easy accessible such as internet-based treatments, but knowledge about their effects is still insufficient. The study evaluated effects of two types of internet-based cognitive behavioral therapy and a structured day patient program, the latter being a standard treatment at an eating disorder clinic at the time for the study. METHODS: 150 partic

"Global Developmental Indicators Associated with the Burden of Congenital Limb and Musculoskeletal Anomalies".

BACKGROUND: The burden of congenital limb and musculoskeletal (CLM) anomalies disproportionately affects low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The objective of this cross-sectional study was to examine the relationship of the global burden of these conditions with other developmental indicators, including financial, geographic, technological, and healthcare workforce metrics. METHODS: Prevalence and disability-adjusted life year (DALY) rates of pediatric CLM anomalies were extracted from the 2021 Global Burden of Disease database for each country. Assessment of the quality and readability of online information on autopsy for the general public: a cross-sectional analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Hospital (consented) autopsy rates have dropped precipitously in recent decades. Online medical information is now a common resource used by the general public. Given clinician reluctance to request hospital postmortem examinations, we assessed whether healthcare users have access to high quality, readable autopsy information online. DESIGN: A cross-sectional analysis of 400 webpages. Readability was determined using the Flesch-Kincaid score, grade level and Coleman-Liau Index. Authorship, DISCERN score and Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) criteria were applied b

Does online health information seeking act like a health behavior?: a test of the behavioral model.

OBJECTIVE: This analysis tests the hypothesis that health information search can be modeled using the behavioral model, a tool traditionally used for other healthcare behaviors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The Pew Internet and American Life August 2006 Survey was used to model five selected Internet health information seeking behaviors: information on a specific disease, diet and nutrition, mental health, complementary and alternative medicine, and sexual health. Each behavior was modeled using hierarchical logistic regression with independent variables of predisposing factors (age, race, sex, and

Association between Internet Use for Health Information and Self-reported Alzheimer's Disease Diagnosis among Older Adults in the United States: Racial and Gender Disparities.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease (AD) disproportionately affects racial and ethnic minority populations, reflecting broader inequities in access to diagnosis, treatment, and long-term care. As digital health technologies become increasingly widespread, understanding whether internet use for health information is associated with Alzheimer's disease diagnosis may inform strategies to address disparities in aging populations. AIM: This study examined the association between internet use for health or medical information and AD diagnosis among older adults in the United States and assessed whether

Internet gambling: an emerging concern in family practice medicine?

BACKGROUND: Gambling problems are rarely brought to the attention of family practice physicians, but pathological gambling can be associated with poor emotional and physical health. Recent availability and easy accessibility of Internet gambling may be associated with pathological gambling status, and Internet gambling may confer health risks. OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the prevalence of Internet gambling, its association with pathological gambling, and the relationship between Internet gambling and health status among patients attending medical and dental clinics. Factors associated with intention to use internet-based testing for sexually transmitted infections among men who have sex with men.

BACKGROUND: Internet-based testing programs are being increasingly used to reduce testing barriers for individuals at higher risk of infection, yet the population impact and potential for exacerbation of existing health inequities of these programs are not well understood. OBJECTIVE: We used a large online sample of men who have sex with men (MSM) in Canada to measure acceptability of Internet-based testing and perceived advantages and disadvantages of this testing approach. METHODS: We asked participants of the 2011/2012 Sex Now Survey (a serial online survey of gay and bisexual men in Cana

Digital access and frailty in older adults: A moderated mediation model of digital literacy and social support.

BACKGROUND: Frailty is common geriatric syndrome associated with disability, hospitalization, and mortality, but could be preventable. Digital access and digital literacy are increasingly relevant to healthy aging, yet pathways linking digital access to frailty risk remain unclear. OBJECTIVES: This study examined whether digital literacy mediates the association between digital access and frailty risk and whether domain-specific social support moderates this indirect association. METHODS: Nationally representative data from 6625 community-dwelling older adults aged ≥65 years were analyzed. D

Patient choice, Internet based information sources, and perceptions of health care: Evidence from Sweden using survey data from 2010 and 2013.

BACKGROUND: Several countries have increased patients' abilities to choose their health care providers, frequently under the assumption that patients are themselves the best agents to make such decisions. In parallel, national and regional health authorities have enhanced access to Internet based information sources (IBIS) to assist patients in making an informed choice. Relatively little, however, is known about the effect that the use of such sources has on key outcomes, including patients' perceptions of care. The aim of this study is to analyze the role of the Internet for patients' confid

Internet addiction or excessive internet use.

BACKGROUND: Problematic Internet addiction or excessive Internet use is characterized by excessive or poorly controlled preoccupations, urges, or behaviors regarding computer use and Internet access that lead to impairment or distress. Currently, there is no recognition of internet addiction within the spectrum of addictive disorders and, therefore, no corresponding diagnosis. It has, however, been proposed for inclusion in the next version of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorder (DSM). OBJECTIVE: To review the literature on Internet addiction over the topics of diagnosis,
