Popularity and worldwide reach of targeted, evidence-based internet streaming video interventions focused on men's health topics.

Streaming video has emerged as a dominant content-delivery medium for healthcare information, with over 30 million visitors daily to the YouTube platform alone. Videos related to men's health have proliferated, but content produced by trained health care providers remains scarce. We evaluated educational YouTube streaming videos created in collaboration with a large, university-based health system focused on male factor infertility, men's health, and Peyronie's disease, uploaded during 2016-2018. All videos featured a board-certified urologist with fellowship training in andrology. Using YouTu

Are Internet- and mobile-based interventions effective in adults with diagnosed panic disorder and/or agoraphobia? A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: There is no meta-analysis that specifically evaluates the effectiveness of Internet- and mobile-based interventions (IMIs) in adults with diagnosed panic disorder and/or agoraphobia (PD/A) so far. The current meta-analysis aims to fill this gap (PROSPERO CRD 42016034016). METHODS: Systematic literature searches in six databases for randomised and controlled clinical trials investigating IMIs in adults, who met diagnostic criteria for PD/A. Study selection and data extraction were conducted independently by two reviewers. Random-effects meta-analyses, pre-planned subgroup and sensi

Designing an Internet-Based Multidomain Intervention for the Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease and Cognitive Impairment in Older Adults: The HATICE Trial.

BACKGROUND: Many dementia and cardiovascular disease (CVD) cases in older adults are attributable to modifiable vascular and lifestyle-related risk factors, providing opportunities for prevention. In the Healthy Aging Through Internet Counselling in the Elderly (HATICE) randomized controlled trial, an internet-based multidomain intervention is being tested to improve the cardiovascular risk (CVR) profile of older adults. OBJECTIVE: To design a multidomain intervention to improve CVR, based on the guidelines for CVR management, and administered through a coach-supported, interactive, platform

Which Combinations of Techniques and Modes of Delivery in Internet-Based Interventions Effectively Change Health Behavior? A Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Many online interventions designed to promote health behaviors combine multiple behavior change techniques (BCTs), adopt different modes of delivery (MoD) (eg, text messages), and range in how usable they are. Research is therefore needed to examine the impact of these features on the effectiveness of online interventions. OBJECTIVE: This study applies Classification and Regression Trees (CART) analysis to meta-analytic data, in order to identify synergistic effects of BCTs, MoDs, and usability factors. METHODS: We analyzed data from Webb et al. This review included effect sizes

Baseline predictors of treatment outcome in Internet-based alcohol interventions: a recursive partitioning analysis alongside a randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: Internet-based interventions are seen as attractive for harmful users of alcohol and lead to desirable clinical outcomes. Some participants will however not achieve the desired results. In this study, harmful users of alcohol have been partitioned in subgroups with low, intermediate or high probability of positive treatment outcome, using recursive partitioning classification tree analysis. METHODS: Data were obtained from a randomized controlled trial assessing the effectiveness of two Internet-based alcohol interventions. The main outcome variable was treatment response, a dicho

Long-Term Outcomes of an Internet-Based Cognitive Behavior Therapy Intervention for Tinnitus: Follow-Up Analysis of a Nonrandomized Clinical Trial.

IMPORTANCE: Determining the durability of treatment effects extending more that 1 year postintervention is crucial for sustainability of health care services for tinnitus. Tinnitus is often disabling and can result in a considerable economic burden. Identifying tinnitus interventions with stable long-term positive effects can improve health care outcomes. Due to the lack of research focused on outcomes longer than 1 year postintervention, the current study was undertaken. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the durability of treatment effects over a 6-year period following internet-based cognitive beh

A self-guided Internet-based intervention for individuals with chronic pain and depressive symptoms: study protocol of a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Despite the existence of evidence-based therapy options for the treatment of chronic pain and comorbid depressive symptoms (e.g., CBT), many individuals remain untreated. Treatment gaps result from a lack of specialists, patient fear of stigmatization, or patient immobility. Internet-based self-help interventions could serve as an anonymous and flexible alternative treatment option. In a pilot study, chronic pain patients with comorbid depressive symptoms who used a generic Internet-based depression program showed a significant reduction in depressive symptoms (but not pain symptom

Combining users' needs with health behavior models in designing an internet- and mobile-based intervention for physical activity in cardiac rehabilitation.

BACKGROUND: Little is understood about the determinants of symptom expression in individuals with fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS). While individuals with FMS often report environmental influences, including weather events, on their symptom severity, a consistent effect of specific weather conditions on FMS symptoms has yet to be demonstrated. Content analysis of a large number of messages by individuals with FMS on Twitter can provide valuable insights into variation in the fibromyalgia experience from a first-person perspective. OBJECTIVE: The objective of our study was to use content analysis o

Reducing Alcohol Misuse and Promoting Treatment Initiation Among Veterans Through a Brief Internet-Based Intervention: Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Young adult veterans who served after the September 11 attacks on the United States in 2001 (ie, post-9/11) are at heightened risk for experiencing behavioral health distress and disorders including hazardous drinking, posttraumatic stress disorder, and depression. These veterans often face significant barriers to behavioral health treatment, and reaching them through brief mobile phone-based interventions may help reduce drinking and promote treatment engagement. OBJECTIVE: Following a successful pilot study, this randomized controlled trial (RCT) aims to further test the efficac

Internet-based imagery rescripting intervention for adult survivors of institutional childhood abuse in the former German Democratic Republic - a pilot study.

Background: From 1949 to 1990, about 500,000 children and adolescents in the former German Democratic Republic (GDR) were placed in institutional care. Many of these individuals experienced physical and sexual abuse as well as general maltreatment. While this population group is in great need of psychosocial support, few low-threshold interventions aimed at the needs of adult survivors of institutional childhood abuse exist. Objective: This pilot study examines the efficacy of an internet-based imagery rescripting intervention in reducing psychopathological symptoms, within a population of sur

Efficacy of an internet-based self-management intervention for depression or dysthymia - a study protocol of an RCT using an active control condition.

BACKGROUND: The treatment of major depressive disorder, a highly prevalent disorder associated with pronounced burden, is a large challenge to healthcare systems worldwide. Internet based self-management interventions seem to be a cost effective way to complement the treatment of depressed patients, but the accumulating evidence is mainly based on the comparison to waitlist controls and treatment as usual, which might lead to an overestimation of effects. Furthermore, studies assessing long-term effects and possible negative outcomes are still rare. METHODS/DESIGN: The proposed study evaluate

What internet- and mobile-based interventions are currently available for adults with overweight or obesity experiencing symptoms of depression? A systematic review.

Given the high prevalence of overweight and obesity and high comorbidity of depressive symptoms, there is a need for low-threshold, accessible care approaches for people with overweight/obesity aimed at improving mental health. Internet and mobile-based interventions (IMI) represent an innovative complementary treatment option. This review systematically searches for IMI aimed at improving mental health in people with overweight/obesity. We conducted a systematic literature search according to the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) criteria in the datab

Evaluation of the internet-based intervention "Selfapy" in participants with unipolar depression and the impact on quality of life: a randomized, parallel group study.

PURPOSE: Depressive disorders cause a major burden of disease worldwide and often lead to a loss of social functioning. Patients suffering from depressive disorders report a lower quality of life (QOL) than people without a history of mental health issues. Internet-based interventions (IBIs) based on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) are effective in reducing symptom severity but data on their impact on quality of life in clinically depressed patients so far is scarce. METHODS: Selfapy is a CBT-based IBI for depressive disorders. 401 participants (332 female, mean age 37 (SD = 11) with a dia

Study protocol for a multisite randomized controlled trial of an internet and mobile-based intervention for preventing and reducing perinatal depressive symptoms.

Nearly 20% of women in the United States experience clinically significant depressive symptoms during pregnancy or the postpartum period. These women may benefit from easily accessible, nonpharmacologic, and inexpensive self-management approaches, such as via internet and mobile-based interventions, to prevent development of symptoms and/or intervene with current symptoms. This paper summarizes the research protocol of a nationally-funded large-scale randomized controlled study to evaluate "Mamma Mia," a self-guided program with 44 modules that women use throughout pregnancy to 6 months postpa
